Good news moving mickey mouse on, he was a scape goat but thats the coaches job in many ways. Too late to probably really change things for the away ashes series but all isnt lost for the home series now.

Do we suddenly seem like a far more confident side now?

I mean... even Watson scored a century. Only a trial game but the signs are promising.

Might go place a bet on the Aussies in this series while the odds are so good, I have a feeling that we are being seriously underestimated by the english press. One thing I have learnt over the years is to never write off an Australian team, Boof also seems like the kind of coach who gets the best out of key players.

Then again the Poms have a formidable bowling attack, ours doesn't even compare. I should stop day dreaming. We need Harris fit.

Top 6

I think we're a rough chance to win now, with Rogers in the team and Watson opening (as much as I prefer him at 6, he's at home at the top of the order). It all rests on the top six consistently making runs, something they've singularly failed to do over the last couple of seasons. I would love to have Huss in this situation, but not to be. The bowlers look cherry ripe for mine. Pattinson and Bird in particular could really do some damage.

The fact that everyone has written us off is to our advantage. It could be 1989 all over again.

Glenn Mitchell compiled this 11 (over at the Roar) http://www.theroar.com.au/2013/07/04/this-is-my-australian-xi-for-the-first-ashes-test/

This team looks sronger than I expected and could even be competitive.

Watson, Rogers, Cowan, Hughes, Clarke, Smith, Haddin, Pattinson, Starc, Bird and Lyon.
Almost surreal how quickly the tide has turned with Boof's appointment, akin to Rudd for Gilliard - hopefully more real. Am feeling somewhat excited about our prospects, especially with the death of "rotation".

How's it turned? They've barely played?

Watson has to score some real runs or he will go down as the most overrated test cricketer in history?

Has any other batsman in history been afforded this many chances? Probably not. I just don't get it. He is a good all rounder so why is he not used as just that?

His body constantly packs up when he bowls more than a couple of overs per match. It is a shame really, as I don't think he is good enough to be a specialist. To only have 2 test match centuries after the amount of games he has played is almost criminal.

For the sake of the team though, I do hope he scores a few tons this tour.

I think too much is made of Watson's inability to convert good starts into centuries. The fact that he gets so many good starts is probably enough to keep him in the team with the current candidates on offer.

So weird to not be looking down at Strauss opening...

Really? I don't. His 50 to 100 conversion rate is appalling. If you are going to get starts then you should be capable of going on with the job. It has nothing to do with the ability of the players around him.

You bloody ripper. 5-50. Poms look shocked!

My bet on Trott being the highest english scorer looks to be a safe one. Our strike bowlers have performed, time to clean up the tail and then start marking runs with the willow. Clarke and Watson!

Oh dear. Seems our top order are as fragile as the Soap Dodgers. This test could be over in three days unless someone hunkers down at the crease for the long haul.

What the FUCK was Cowan thinking? This is a guy who leaves balls that are anywhere from 0.1mm outside off stump....

78% of England's runs off the bat from 4's (152/194) - I wonder if this is close to a record in test cricket?
Also, 21 extras? Somewhat akin to giving them an extra wicket.
