It's about choosing your time to kick.

Waratahs got it all wrong in 2013 by trying to run most of their clearances, and it didn't work well for them. They got the balance much better in 2014.

Absolutely.

Deciding between three choices:
1) there's an attacking opportunity, spread the ball and link with the support players
2) no attacking opportunity but support is close enough that the ball can be taken into the defence and safely retained
3) neither of the first two options are safe so kick for touch

I felt like we did too much of option 3) when option 2) was a perfectly safe one to take.

Adam's versatility is also one of his great attributes. That he why is is approaching his 100 tests. Maybe if he had only played 13 then he may only have 50 tests.

Most backs are interchangeable (maybe not 9 and 10), same with 4,5,6,7,8

It seems that prop is a really specialist poition. With a few exceptions like Slipper, Holmes, Kepu and Alexander (who can play both sides if necessary), generally you are either a LHP or THP.

Think Robbo Sio Daley and Pek shun the idea of playing THP and Weekes and co the LHP position. Slipper certainly got his start because of ability to play both sides and Keps, Benny A and Holmes have played plenty of times on either side.

All spots on a rugby team are specialist spots but a bloke that can cover multiple spots is a very valuable member of any team.

You do know that Sio was selected in the Wallaby squad as a THP? Not that I disagree with your premise, just I don't think successive wallaby coaches have agreed.

Sometimes its the only way.

I see from twitter that English, Skelton, Schatz, Mann-Rea, Fainga'a, Genia & Robinson are all free to play NRC.

Good move. Must be costing the ARU a bit in airfares though...

I'd hope Qantas would be giving them a good deal.

Qantas are ****s. When I had to fly up for my Dad's funeral the "compassionate" fare was worth about $30 off their already overpriced shit. I got fares from Virgin much cheaper. Its not about the meal for a 1 hour flight - for that kind of money I want a bloody foot massage!

They're run by a fucking numpty and their customer service is still reminiscent of a government organisation, from the hopeless old dragons who run their front counter to the utter badgers on the flight.

Give me Virgin any day.

Still, they'll do well on the share market now the little Irish prick in charge has finished lowering expectations.

End rant.

Operating off a pretty low base though. 58% of fuck all is still fuck all. Depends how much you had dunnit?

Yeah sorry. I was carried away on the power of outrage.

Where were we? Oh yeah....

Anyway, I think our scrum had better practice quick heels all week and Carter and Simmons will need to switch on or the Argie back five are going to run over them. Without Palu there, the second row and flanks need to up the workrate on D and give McCalman a chance to crash it up.

The tight ball running will change between TPN, BennyMac, and Slipper mainly, and the rest better work their arse off to secure it before unleashing our backs. The Argie backs won't be able to stand up to our guys on anything resembling a dry track, though they have some talent too.

The biggest factor is going to be the niggle. The Argies tried it on hard, French-T14 style against the ABs and it worked with the rampantly incompetent ref. Glenn Jackson should have had a quiet word in his ear from Link before kickoff about that crap and how we won't put up with it.

My call: Carter to stand up and show a bit of country mongrel against these pricks. Low and hard all day boys.

Yep, up and into their faces from the kick off. There's no going around or over them, you've got to front up in the tough stuff and lay down your marker first. We'll need to get points on the board early too, you don't want to get into an arm wrestle with these guys. It's like playing England in a lot of ways, when they keep the game close they often find a way to win.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), rightfully or wrongly has always been considered our backlines Mr Fix-it.

Players will play where chosen, for the benefit of the team. If they don't want to then fuck off.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) to his crediit and probably his personal detriment, has always played where chosen (for the benefit of the team)

Some players are just more versatile than others and their game evolves.

But as someone else inferred, selections some times come down to trade offs on who's available for what position.

A few years back AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) was the 2nd best fullback in the squad, so when the first choice goes down injured you naturally play the 2nd best. The third choice option was obviously seen a step down too far, so what happened, they moved the 1st choice centre to fullback because the 2nd choice centre was seen as less of a risk than bringing in the 3rd choice fullback.

Do forward packs still practice channel 1 ball with the hooker using his heel?

Haven't seen it for a while;)

The Argies don't because bajadita.

We will need to after watching what happened to Franks in the second scrum. Eek!

Here's some more supplementary reading and video:

http://www.myoquip.com.au/Bajada_article.htm (Very technical and very, very good description of the icky bits and pieces of the dark arts - is this our own Bruce Ross?)

http://www.sport24.co.za/Columnists/TankLanning/Beware-the-return-of-Bajada-20130815

Under the current laws the Bajadita is in essence the art of coordinated pushing, breathing and scrummaging. You can see in the last video how clearly in-tune the entire pack is as to where the scrum is heading and you can see them all adjust as they recoil and then push in unison. When they start to angle in and all 8 are providing pressure it just destroys the link between prop and hooker and in effect destabilizes the entire opposing scrum.

Even if their own front row starts to splint you can see the back five maintaining their height and shape while the other back five typically capitulates and the penalty goes.
