I'm not 100% against Moses playing. With Haddin and Johnson in the team we still have plenty of batting depth. I just think an extra bowler would come in handy.

On Hughes- one can't deny his Sheild form has been impressive, but what is this, his 4th time being brought back into the Test side? I want to see him nail it as much as anyone but I think it just isn't going to happen.

If Pattinson is fit, it would be awesome to see the Aussies play 4 pacemen (Harris, Siddle, Johnson and Pattinson). Don't see why you need a specialist spinner in a South African tour, especially when you have Smith's part-time leggies.

I don't believe there are many times when four quicks is warranted, tempting as it might be at times. The Saffer pitches are similar to our own, so I'd be playing a spinner. Lyon took 19 wickets (I think) in the Ashes, so I believe he's worth his spot. Balance in the attack is a pretty good mantra for mine and I think you need an option other than pace.

It is hard to argue against Lyon's inclusion. But I do think SA is the one place you'd give 4 quicks a try- similar pitches to Australia but I think the Aussie ones offer more for spinners (which isn't a whole lot these days, thanks to the SCG going green and Adelaide's drop in revolution).

I'm pretty excited to see this series. Two very good sides so every game should be a good contest.

I never really see the point of four quicks. If three quicks can't take the wickets then I doubt four will make the difference.

If it's the fourth quick that makes the difference then you probably shouldn't have picked one of the first three.

Lyon needs to play every test because he has been bowling consistently well and offers something different. One of the biggest impacts he has is that he bowls his overs quickly and gives us greater flexibility with our bowlers.

With the slow rate that modern test teams bowl their overs at, it's very difficult to get through 90 overs in the 6 and a half hours without having a spinner.

Not picking Lyon has more impact on our play than just having an extra pace bowler instead of a spinner.

Well said BH.

Not only that, but if the wicket does start to turn that is an area where we have a clear advantage over the Proteas who really have very little in the spin department.

Lyon was in great form at home, we need to reward consistent performances.

Possible XI's?

Marsh currently 65 and Smith 29 with aus 4/169 great fight back from those two and a big chance for marsh to make a statement and justify his selection but he is struggling a bite it's his calf by the look of it.

Lunch and Aussies 4/175.

Marsh showing some real fight and playing some great shots but struggling to shake off the calf injury. He's going to need to dig really deep to get the deserved ton. Smith playing a typically aggressive innings but scoring runs is looking tough on this slow pitch.

Only one wicket lost that session so a great fight back from the Aussies. Clarke threw away yet another start but Marsh and Smith have really picked up the pieces from a dangerous situation.

Proteas looking abit frustrated and the heat is really taking its toll now. They must be concerned with the Aussie aggression towards Petersen. He can't seem to bowl an over without conceding a boundary and it's forcing the quicks to bowl more than they should have to.

Par score 300. Aussies cruising but not safe just yet

Yeah you're spot on. It's clearly a tactic as Warner alluded to pre match, and it's working. Peterson can't get settled and the quick bowlers are getting worked over in the heat. Helps that Steyn is not 100 percent as well. Not great captaincy from Smith really, given that it was probably a 50/50 wicket.

Another great fight back from the lower order. Found it very interesting the commentators mentioned that in the first innings of the Ashes series we averaged 140 odd for 5 down and they were still concerned after Clarke departed.

Well done Marsh, hopefully he can find the consistency needed. Smith I really rate, one of the better players of short stuff in the side. A score of 400+ puts us in a great position to win this. Batting last is not going to be fun.

Was concerned about Swampy but he done good.

Everyone who said Smith wasn't up to it the last couple of years (mostly qlders who had their own candidate in mind) can suck it.

Can't wait for Notch and Ryno to get in there and show everyone that's it not a slow pitch, just that guys like Phatlander are hideously overrated, and Steyn is mentally weak. They have no fourth bowler, and while Morne is good, all you need to do with him is duck a bit.

Excellent batting by Marsh, but fuck he's got to back it up in the next 3 innings. They'll give him another 9 tests now based on this one.

just that guys like Phatlander are hideously overrated, and Steyn is mentally weak.

How is Philander hideously overrated? The guy took over 300 first class wickets before he was given a test cap and has taken 105 test wickets in 20 tests at an average of 18 since.

If anything, South Africa missed a trick by not playing him much earlier. The guy's test career has been an absolute success so far.

As for Steyn, he's been the best bowler in the world for a few years. It was reported he was sick the day before the test.

It would seem to me that Smith made a poor decision to send Australia in given that the conditions weren't amazingly favourable to the bowling side and his best bowler was under the weather.

As they say, if in doubt after winning the toss, think about bowling and then bat anyway.

Great to see Marsh stepping up and I want to see more of it. His old man was one of my favorite players growing up. I just loved the guts we had back then with him, Boonie, AB and Waugh in his early days.

Clearly the selectors have seen something like this in him that we haven't. Hope he continues to repay them.
