Fortunate to have him and rich enough to afford him and a dedicated 1sts coach as well. I have expressed this view before but I would argue that what grass roots rugby doesn't need is one very rich school to throw resources to out-spend their opponents in a competition in which they are the only ones spending. There is little point in creating a rugby centre of excellence at Warrawee and arguing that it is good for grass roots rugby when some of your opposing schools are now done to 2 teams in an age group. the other schools either couldn't afford to do it even if they wanted to, or can afford it and don't want to. And we all see what happens in professional sport when the highly paid coach ceases to deliver - the coach leaves and the culture that he brought with him leaves as well. Unless the aim is to continue to create an ongoing professionally coached rugby program in what is still a competition coached by amateurs with regular teaching loads. Can't really see how this is helping grass roots rugby outside a couple of teams in a single postcode.

Hugh Margin or Liam Rasch will be wearing the 6 for CAS.

Being aligned with 'brook I must say totally agree that both Margin and Rasch will be in the side , both can play lock or backrow and their physicality and workrate around the field is what is needed when the going gets tough. I would not swap either of them for young Clifton and yes i have seen him play several times over the past 2 years.

Barker Aloys must rate as one of the worst 1st XV games I have seen in a very long time. Understand there were players out, playing out of position etc. But, the amount of dropped ball, missed tackles, passing back and forth to static players, uncontested scrums, missed lineout throws etc made for dreadful game. At least the closeness of the score kept it interesting....

Expect Knox (v Aloys) and Waverley (v Barker) to run up very big scores next week.

14 straight wins achieved while applying the proper ethos of school sport.
The reason he "succeeds", in the narrowest possible definition of the word, is because he demands devotion to his cause, which is the cause of winning irrespective of the ramifications for the rounding of the education process which is, after all, the intended purpose of school sport.
In the professional environment, where all teams have the goal of winning at nearly any costs and have no paramount goal of producing well rounded young adults, his performance was far from successful. He sacrifices the opportunity of his charges to play cricket or basketball in summer on the altar of people like you trumpeting his success.

Probably not as a many as you, but as said before if the young lad is 6'4 and 110kg, Margin fron knox is 6'9

I'm not sure of his exact height and weight but he's big and strong and has improved out of sight this year. He was an U16s player last season.
Margin's a good player but I rate Clifton higher because of his mobility, speed, strong defence and high work rate.
The CAS coach has a good problem deciding which one should be in the run on side and which one is on the bench.

Ok we (the Monday morning "dingbats"/quarterbacks) are squabbling about whether Clifton is 6ft 4 or merely the perfect height of 189 cm (think Sean Connery)

and whether Williams should be given a public lynching

on the 2 issues at hand I think Clifton is a giant ... and after his 50 metre effort on Saturday, he'd have to be walking an inch taller

and as for Williams I think water-boarding would be a suitable punishment

on other matters ... this is my biased read on the season

Knox appears to have one hand on the trophy, and are front runners in several age groups but not all ... so really good to see the CAS comp is a balanced one.

The front runners are:

1sts Knox
2nds Knox
16As Waverley
15As Knox
14As Trinity
13As Waverley

so think Waverley can (with a bit of luck, hard work, etc) take out 1sts (joint), 16As and 13As

however the season has plenty to run, and really just hoping Waverley will continue their good form in ones and set up a season deciding clash at QP

as for other age groups doesn't really matter .... all I see is great educational opportunities ... for the winner, the loser and everyone else right down to the mighty Fs

I still don't get why so many are so sore about Knox deciding to spend their money on a rugby program. If this is a school with 300 kids per year paying $30,000pa, then that comes to $54m in revenue. And that does not include the junior schools.

Knox is easily big enough to justify spending a small amount of it on specialised rugby coaches or centres.

I also don't get an argument saying basically "the other schools don't do it, so if Knox does, they will win every year". The other 5 schools have a choice - do something similar , or fight for 2nd place. If Armstrong, Frost and Basson are playing Super rugby in 3 years, then I for one will say it has worked.

And no, I am not affiliated with Knox in any way. I just don't like the tall poppy thing of criticising them for trying do really well. Should they lower themselves to everyone else's standards? Waverley for example cannot compete economically - that's life. Why stop at rugby - how have swimming and athletics been going at Waves for the last couple of seasons? Why not have a crack at Barker, Know and Trinity for the professional programs they have put in place for those sports?

I suspect he has hit his employer's designated KPIs so on that basis it's unreasonable to say he and success cannot be mentioned in the same sentence, even if I do have reservations over the potential collateral cost.

If you're right about the KPI's then whoever set them is not an educationist.
