The Septics have finally done it: THEY'VE TOPPED 100,000. Well done, Donald! Surely that warrants a week off to play golf. ;)

Nice... Media Watch also did a lovely take down on that Markson article a few weeks back....

    https://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/episodes/dossier/12235742

What’s amazing is that Markson is still flogging her original story on twitter and Sky News, despite it being well proven that it was all bullshit.

Lets look at both side of the political coin.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (Democrat) ordered nursing homes to take patients from hospitals without testing them for the coronavirus.
23,000 deaths in New York State.
That's about 23% of the entire nation. 5,600 deaths from NY nursing homes alone.
All politicians appear to have made some mistakes and some good decisions. Trump and Cuomo included.

You know, it would be a lot easier to believe you actually cared about those deaths if you stopped referring to the victims as "Septics."

Not sure if I can see this idea catching on worldwide:

Of course, it's a mystery to me why anyone in Germany would go to a Burger King in the first place.

Google "excess mortality USA 2020" & there's any number of analyses that show 2020's numbers are well outside the 2015-2019 range. I think this one shows it best:

    IMG_0987.PNG

The grey shading shows the range for the years 2015-19. At best the numbers you quote were accurate at around week 10 or 11 which just happens to be when the numbers for 2020 start to be well above the five-year average.

"A comparison of the number of deaths from all causes in the U.S. during the first 17 weeks of 2020 reveals a higher mortality than for the same period in any of the previous five years. While the death count was comparable to previous years in the first two months of 2020, it increased rapidly in March and April. Comparisons of mortality are highly sensitive to how the data are gathered and presented, therefore any claims based on the data must always be presented in the appropriate context. Since its outbreak in the U.S., COVID-19 has claimed more lives than diabetes, suicide, or stroke."

"A high-powered group investigating opening up trans-Tasman travel amid the coronavirus pandemic hopes to put its proposal to politicians by early June, and get people travelling by the July school holidays."

The high-powered group is called "The ‘Trans-Tasman Safe Border Group’ [and] is made up of 11 government agencies, six airports, two airlines, and includes health experts and airline, airport and border agency representatives from both Australia and New Zealand.

"Started by Auckland Airport, and co-ordinated by the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum (ANZLF), the team of 40 experts have been working for the past two weeks on recommendations for the re-opening of borders between Australia and New Zealand."

Co-Chair of ANZLF is none other than Ann Sherry, a name many G&GR members will recognise :).

A week or two on the Goldy around the time of my birthday (Mid-August) sounds good to me!

How is a trans-Tasman bubble going to work given the different strategies in NZ and Aus? Shirley the NZ border isn't going to open -- or, at least, the quarantine removed -- until either Australia has a better handle on its situation, or NZ abandons the elimination strategy?

EDIT: Or we might just let Tasmania in, as they seem to be nearing 0 recorded cases too. Hell, we might as well annex the little wee buggers if they're still producing cricketers to Ponting's level.

Not sure if I'm interpreting the graph correctly, but does it say the 'weekly deaths 5 yr average" is less than 'weekly COVID cases"?
Because 98% of cases are mild and the graph appears to be measuring two different variables.

Ann Sherry is also former CEO, Chair and current special advisor to Carnival Cruise, operators of the Ruby Princess and a company under a current NSW Police homicide investigation. She was still promoting herself as Chair both personally and on the Carnival Cruise website in roles she no longer occupied.

    https://www.afr.com/rear-window/lucky-break-ann-sherry-no-longer-carnival-s-chairman-20200405-p54h6v

The fact that she is putting herself forward for this is disgraceful when she went missing during the Ruby Princess crisis and is associated with a company that was irresponsible and being criminally investigated. It caused a lot of unnecessary personal suffering both in Australia and New Zealand.

Two different scales: excess mortality peaks at ~72K in Week 16, reported Covid cases at ~220K, also in Week 16. Also two different data sources: mortality from death certificates issued by local authorities, Covid cases from CDC. Even I can see that both go orbital at around the same time & have a similar trajectory.

The goal seems to be zero community transmission at either end, which I believe has been achieved, plus reliable testing. Maybe you'll have to get tested, wait 2-3 days & present your negative test result at the check-in counter. Dunno, but Winnie's all over it & what Winnie wants Winnie tends to get.

Aurelius, if you check my posts #1724, #1726, #1738, #1884, #1961 and #2002 on this subject you may note my concern and empathy for ALL victims of coronavirus. My post you didn't like noting the 100k mark is dripping with irony, most seem to've got it; I stole the "victorious" theme from The Shovel: https://www.theshovel.com.au/2020/03/27/america-is-the-best-at-coronavirus/

Irony's a tricky one for some, you also missed DP's ironic humour in your post #1683 earlier on this thread.
