Hughes needs to learn to bat under pressure, he dominates at shield level but makes stupid decisions when he's playing for aus...

I found this article sums up the issues of Hughes well - from cricket info http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-new-zealand-2011/content/current/story/544165.html

As I have said I am a fan of Hughes but I feel he will be dropped, he'll have to go back to shield & sort himself out. He's young, he's got some time. A lot of people talk about his defence needing work, that is true but he also needs to add another area to hit in attack to keep the opposition guessing, right now they know to put people in the slips & where to bowl - Hughes has to learn to leave some of those balls but try targeting a new area to not become predicatable. Easier said than done though.

Update: Watching how most of us have fallen today I'd say the pitch itself has been a massive factor, NZ's total not looking too bad given how we were going early on. Siddle & Pattinson doing very well with the bat. Sun coming out might make the pitch a bit more batting friendly. Still think Hughes needs to work on his technique, that was more the result of his dismissal than the pitch.

kiwis in a strong, but not yet dominant, position. Pitch is improving and bowlers are having to work for their wickets now. By day 4, this could easily be a 300+ run wicket if tomorrow is sunny. Aus have chased down 350+ in hobart in the 4th innings before. If we can keep them to under 275, I would be confident of an Aus win. After that its will come down to how well the kiwis bowl and how well we bat.

Good day for Aus, very happy with Siddle in particular and the patience of the bowlers in general. Just like NZ weren't home and hosed last night, Aus are quite there yet, another 50 runs from the openers though and I will be prepared to call it our way. Hughes lucky to survuve, but I thought he showed alot more patience and was more circumspect about waving his bat outside off. Warner did what he does, if the kiwis don't get him out early tomorrow, the game could be over by lunch.

Lets see how tomorrow plays out. For the kiwi's batting, I would be disappointed with Ryder and the bottom 4. There was probably another 30 or more runs to be had if the tail had of played with more dilligence - instead they seemed keen to score as quick as possible and get the aussies in. I feel sprry for Taylor - he will have alot of regrets about this two test series both personally and as captain I hope it doesn't affect his batting long term as he has potential to be a top 10 world batter long term. I personally think the kiwis would be better served by someone else being the c to free Taylor up.

If Hughes scores runs tomorrow the selectors and Clarke might be prepared to give him another go. I want him gone.

Watson yes. The other two I'm not sure.

Order in terms of first class averages:

Watson, Hughes, Khawaja, Cowan

Order in terms of test averages

Watson, hughes Khawaja

I think Hughes, Khwaja, S Marsh and Warner will be play off in the chairmans XI game V india for two spots in the boxing day test (opener and number 3 position). Hughes is the youngest of the four. Cowan's in the second Chairmans XI and looks to be on the outer.

A Cowan and Warner opening partnership intrigues the hell out of me. I believe that Cowan has a bit of a grudge against Warner (1) for some lip he gave Brett Geeves a year or two ago and (2) for a possible easy ride into the Aussie team.

I actually think Cowan is getting a leg up in the media because of his 'profile' and the fact he is good mates with Gideon Haig. I am a fan of Cowan, but don't think he is test standard. Still would love to see him there as he has worked hard on his game and I love see a grafter earn his way in the team. Plus, I'd love to get back to picking players in form. We seem to do it with bowlers, but not batsman.

By the way, speaking of players in form, Nathan Lyon has been bloody impressed. I was a massive doubter, more out of nativity than anything. But he's been mightily impressive.

I like the idea of a rolling average. Say their last 8 innings, in first class cricket:

Cowan 556 runs @ 93
Marsh 426 runs @ 61
Warner 293 runs @ 42
Kwahaja 273 runs @ 39
Watson 207 runs @ 26
Hughes 157 runs @ 20

Yeah form is everything. Hughes is still a great prospect, but in poor form. He should go down to Shield cricket and get his confidence back.

I agree with Reg about Cowan. A good player but not really a long-term international prospect. A bit like Chris Rogers or Marcus North.

I would open with Khawaja and Warner on Boxing Day. I have been impressed with Warner and think he deserves another shot. Khawaja has a technique suited to the top of the order, and Marsh should come in at 1st drop, with Watson at 6.

The twist I would make is to make it an index where (say) Cowan's average was expressed relative to the other specialist batsmen results in the same games as Hughes' 80 v SA (best or second best bowling attack in the world) is more meritorious than Cowan's 100 against the black caps in a warm up game.

Warner is the new boy on the block and so will be viewed more favourably for a while regardless of results but I don't think he has looked much better than Hughes in this series. His dismissal in the 1st innings in hobart was almost a carbon copy of Hughes' and he also had a lucky survive early in his second innings when his edge didn't carry to the slips. Warner will always curry more favour though as he will hit more boundaries than hughes, cowan or marsh.

More importantly, we need to uncover/build an opening pair and avoid this treadmill where the openers are constantly playing for their individual survival. We haven't had a proper opening pair since Langer and Hayden. Watson and Katich never really clicked and Hughes has been under constant pressure, just as much due to poor selection decisions as due to mixed form. Even Watson isn't settled at the top of the order given the constant speculation that he should move down the list. People have been raving about Hughes' technique flaw since he came onto the scene. Its been going on that long and with such intensity that most don't even realise that his highly criticised flaw has changed from being an inability to play the short ball (why he was dropped in England) to playing loose shots outside off stump. Then we have Khawaja who looks to have great technique but hasn't played that break though innings yet, he needs to prove he can score big at the test level if he is going to keep a spot in the top 3.

For the upcoming series against India, Watson will be one opener with the other four to fight it out for the other opener and #3 position. Its crap we are in this position but we have to play the hand we are dealt with.

On the positive side, the bowling attack is looking better. Pattison looks strong and Siddle bowled with gerat discipline yesterday. Cummins is still to return and Lyon looks like a handy spinner. Clarke is capatining the team well IMO and not letting our bowling attack stagnate when wickets aren't coming our way - something Ponting let happen all too frequently. Haddin's glovework has been the best its been for a couple of years, he still is a little sloppy every now and then but vastly improved over his work in the last few years. We are still dropping too many catches for my liking, something for the squad to keep working on.

Vale Phil Hughes Test Career

I've just witnessed the death of Phil Hughes test career. I would like to suggest that he goes for at least 3 years before any resurrection attempt...
