James O'Connor thrown out of Perth airport for alleged drunken behaviour

Georgina Robinson Rugby Reporter

The Australian Rugby Union is investigating an incident in which Wallabies winger James O’Connor was not allowed to board a plane and had to be removed from a Perth airport terminal.

O’Connor was due to fly to Bali with his girlfriend shortly before 5am on Sunday, the morning after the Wallabies won a tight 14-13 Rugby Championship Test against Argentina at Perth’s Paterson’s Stadium.

Australian Federal Police alleged he was intoxicated and not allowed to board the Air Asia flight. It is understood O’Connor has denied being drunk but admitted to engaging in a heated argument over the seating arrangements for himself and his girlfriend.

So he either goes to bed and gets up pissed or gets pissed staying up all night before a cheap arsed flight. (He was sober enough a few hours later to get another flight)

In two minds here;
The one says so what he was off duty, a private citizen going about his day.

The other says, you need to grow up especially after your behavior earlier this year.

The best punishment - nothing (no contract, no place in the Wobs)

Anyone playing as badly as he has should not be having some 'off duty' time but working harder to get up to speed.

AFAIK he earns more than the Prime Minister does.

As much as he may not want to be a 24/7 role model, it goes with the turf. There is very little now in todays network connected world that could be considered off duty and private.

There are certain responsibilities associated with pulling on a Gold Jumper.

Being escorted off the premises by the coppers is never a good look. Things have to have escalated a fair bit to get to that level.

The responses from Link, the ARU, Western Force and Bieber Boy himself will be very interesting.

Remind me to never cross any of you blokes......

Just with being ''escorted off the premises by the coppers'' if what JOC (James O'Connor) is saying is true that it is a Seating issue that got out of hand and had to rebook then of course he would have had to be walked out of Customs you cant just come and go in that place.

Think everyone should just take a step back calm down take a deep breath and chill, and wait to see what comes of the investigation from the ARU (and don’t give me this shit about the ARU will sweep it under the carpet not with link they wont).

For me right now this is a media beat up if the ARU decide that it isn’t then what will be will be but no need to go and hang the bloke right now.

On reflection I'm with a GaffaCHino. I'll wait to hear the facts. If this was Pocock we'd all give him the benefit of the doubt. Admittedly JOC (James O'Connor) has a track record which leads us to jump to conclusions, but I'm going to wait and see what comes out.

.

This is a good point.

If he'd done anything seriously wrong, he would have been escorted from the airport and arrested.

He was never arrested or charged.

That certainly doesn't mean that JOC (James O'Connor) didn't do anything wrong, but until more details emerge it is hard to comment accurately.

If it is a seating issue you guys will look like complete dicks. Just calm down and hang him after you know the facts.

Sully, the whole purpose of a lynch mob is to make spur of the moment decisions without knowing all the facts.

The fun and party atmosphere of a good lynching is almost always lost when due process is followed. Hanging someone after a fair trial is a far more sombre experience.

Slim there are people from the leadership group trying to calm things down a little and you're acting like an arsehole. Try and control yourself if you can.

People ramping up the outrage at the drop of a hat, and jumping to conclusions with little or no known facts.

Yep, sounds just like an internet forum to me.

It's the pattern of behaviour. If it was Pocock no one would be jumping up and down because he has never done anything like it before.

The thing is this comes on top of the embarrassment of the current Wallabies. It's painful to know that your team as a unit don't want it as much as the opposition. The AB and Boks passion and commitment to the contest are leaving us for dead. I don't think it is a long draw to bow to say a large chunk of the
problem is the rock star attitude that has been allowed to grow within certain individuals in the playing group. I would rather see this cancer excised from the group and loose a few more games in the short term if it means we can get back on track in the long term with a playing group of committed team men who want to win for each other and the proud wallaby tradition.

JOC (James O'Connor) deserves the benefit of the doubt, but if it plays out as it looks and he was ejected for acting like a dick because his rock star attitude wasn't being massaged as he deemed appropriate, Australian rugby should cut him loose for good and start the rebuilding process with guys who live and breathe to be a wallaby. I would rather see Liam Gill start on the wing than brand O'Connor.

But the issue here is that Pocock hasn't put himself in a position to be criticised continuously, unlike McCaw *boom tish*, but I digress.

The situation in itself is sufficient for him to be stood down immediately. He was escorted away following a verbal altercation with airport staff who are generally trained to deal with aggressive customers, e.g. those who have issues with incorrect seating arrangements. For the situation to escalate to a stage whereby he was asked to not board the flight is damning in itself.

i think more importantly, we are no longer in a position whereby we are forced to tolerate his antics due to a lack of talented players coming through the ranks. we have players who are ready (or almost ready) to take the jersey.

If this was a year ago, and another of the muppeteers was involved, we would have passed 50 pages by now, not stopping to let facts, objectivity, due process or anything get in the way of our mission to vent, accuse or defend.

Remember G&GR broke the Beale on the Bus incident via a subsequently deleted tweet that had been saved in the interim by an eagle eyed snout.
