Scots are continually producing some of the finest rugby places to date. Here are my predictions for 2014 1XV season:

1) Aidan Brown 1XV/2XV/3XV-2013
Great ball skills/ strong running game/ needs work on scrums.

2) Jakob Sedgeman 1XV/2XV/3XV/Injured-2013
Great set piece/ needs work on speed and scots style of running game / strong ball carrier.

3) lachy Terbutt 2XV/3XV/Injured-2013
Great running game/ great speed.

4) Tobi Rudolf 1XV/2XV-2013
Strong ball carrier/ great set piece.

5) Max Hendrie 1XV/2XV/3XV/Injured-2013
Fast and strong ball carrier/ strong set piece/ needs work on breakdown.

6)Henry Kamp 16A's-2013/ Ben j 2XV-2013
Henry shows great potential may lack experience?/// Ben J strong player but lacks the punch in running game that other back row players bring to the table/ good ruck work.

7) Taylor Deer 1XV/2XV-2013
strong running game much like Hamish/ needs to put on some size/ Good ball skills.

8) Angus C 1XV/Injured-2013
The whole package when it comes to NO.8 Currently injured but will make a strong return next season.

9) Theo Strang 16A's-2013
Great passing to one side/ needs work on communication.

10) Jack Maddock 1stXV/2XV/3XV/Injured-2013/ Callum Styles 1XV-2013
Both great kicking skills/ great ball skills how ever Jack has a better attacking game, where as Callum is a strong player with better defense.

11) Jarrod Cullen 16A's-2013/??
Great speed and skills/ strong running game.

12) James Hawkins 1XV/2XV/16A's-2013
Strong running game and ball carrier.

13) Guy Porter 1XV-2013
returning 1XV great running game/ skill set.

14) ????
N/A

15) Callum Styles/ Jack Maddock
same as 10 my recommendation would be callum.

special mentions to Scots 1XV today as they look to extend their undefeated streak in hope for the GPS premiership.

Did not realise they had a few coming back...... Guy Porter and Tobi Randorf, Angus Crighton were all stars of the 2013 premiership side to have them back with a strong 16a side should make for a great contest with Joeys, View and Kings ....... 2014 will be another blockbuster...........

In the Joeys team above is Jake Finnane related to Steve of Wallaby fame who helped kick start Aussie rugby or his brother Mark. And Is Tom Wright related to
Ken Wright another famous Wallaby from Randwick?

Jake is the son of Steve. Fairly certain Tom and Ken are of no relation.

This came via the TAS Facebook page:

"Good luck to Jayden Harradine & Wayne Mumbulla playing in the National u16s Indigenous rugby team at national rugby championships at St Ignatius College, Riverview, and to Callum Morris, with the National Indigenous u17s rugby squad in France, playing Racing-Metro, Cote d'Argent and Stade Toulousain!"

I knew about the fist two, not the third. i presume that this means that TAS will have three Aboriginal rep players in the Firsts next year. Mind you, I still have no feel for how strong the team might be.

This weekend New England Rugby celebrates the years since its foundation in 1893. Over 600 players are returning to Armidale, including 13 Wallabies. I will do a proper story later, but this time I wanted to record one piece of information.

In school rugby, the wheel turns. Scholarships or not, the standard varies from year to year. The 1985 TAS First Fifteen was a rather good team. Coached by John Hipwell, it included two future Wallabies. These were its results:
  • TAS vs St Peters 6-6
  • TAS vs UNE U18 26-0
  • TAS v St Josephs 3-0
  • TAS vs Shore 9-3
  • TAS vs Iggies 10-6
  • TAS vs Cranbrook 22-7
  • TAS vs Rockhampton Grammar 42-0
  • TAS vs Toowoomba Grammah 28-9
  • TAS v St Stanilaus 7-3
  • TAS vs Brisbane Grammar 34-3
  • TAS vs Downlands 13-6
TAS did not lose a match the whole year even playing Sydney GPS, Sydney CAS, Queensland GPS schools. If TAS had been playing in the GPS that year, I might well have been a country white-wash. That would have been nice!
