Rebels 2020

Highlander35 you could be right there may have been an insurance issue. I know there was an injury issue.

I thought Max had some sort of Back Condition that made him uninsurable here but not in the UK. Or did I have a weird recollection of events.

I think it was his neck. Hasn't stopped him having a pretty good career though.

I remember watching training one arvo while the boys were doing an anti-choke tackle drill. The idea was that you grabbed the ball and ran into two defenders, they would try to hold you up and you were supposed to leg drive through the tackle and get to ground. When it was Max's turn, two of the locks tried to hold him up and he just bulldozed them both back about 20 metres before someone blew a whistle. He was a pretty strong young fellow! Does he still hold the bench press record at the club?

Last night's result was very disappointing. The Rebels are showing a pattern of not being able to convert opportunities/ dominance into points. Match v Tahs and Brumbies (should have won by more) and last night.

On the bright side, despite being 4th on ladder if we win last two matches v Waratahs and Force, we make the finals.

Unfortunately Scooter, its been a common problem for the Rebels, and not just recently nor only this year. One of the reasons ive been so disappointed with them. Lots of games where they have dominated possession, field position and continually butchered scoring opportunities. Something in their DNA.

They have done so well the last few weeks adapting a pragmatic nature, yet yesterday it seemed they continued to roll the dice over and over again. The decision making over the years has been strange on the field, even going back to Adam Coleman’s refusal to take the 3 over the Jags for a draw (which would of seen them make the finals) but instead they went all out for the win. A few weeks ago they opted for two scrums in a row, dominated both of them but then went the 3, despite the ref had the opposition on a warning. Yesterday the refusal to hit the corner when the reds were on the rack and then when there was no momentum 30m out refusing to take easy 3pts. The game management is all very strange and points to a greater Aus rugby problem where I don’t think players are actual students of the game (most likely League fans).

We can even point to the first game between the two teams when we kicked it back mid field with less than a minute to go, the lack of decision making and understanding of the bonus point situation last week against the Brums. They are not managing the wider implications and just simply ‘playing the game’. I wonder how many in the team actually know how many competition points they have and the points of the other 4 teams?

On saying that I genuinely believe if we play that game 10x we win 9 of them. Given the dominance of the stats.

yes as i posted after the first Reds game, arguably the dumbest team ive ever seen, as a collective, very few Rugby smarts, and from people who should be, but are clearly not "students" of the game. The Coleman decision was absolute BS and quite possibly the worst piece of captaincy in the history of sport, i also remember a game against the Sharks, i think, at AAMI where they went to 6 or 7 attacking 5m line outs in a row, working the same couple of moves without success. the opposition had a man in the bin at the time - FFS.

"On saying that I genuinely believe if we play that game 10x we win 9 of them. Given the dominance of the stats" But they dont get to play it again and i am doubtful they will learn the lessons. I really like Wessels, but one would be hard pressed to say he has got the best out of his playing group on a regular basis.

edit: ps the Coleman fiasco, i was sitting behind the Rebels bench, Genia went absolutely f'n ballistic

Rebels3 yes game management has been a problem. Another example goes back to our first AU game v Brumbies when we were 8 down right on full time and received a penalty 30 metres out. Instead of kicking the goal to get a bonus point, Louwrens took a quick tap.

Rebels 3 ive said it to my wife and freinds(anyone who cares to put up with me) for years that most of the players are too clinical, game dumb. Another example was the force game the other night when Prior decides to go for the scrum a 3rd time in a row when the decisions around scrums were 50/50, and the tahs lineout specialist off the field injured! just plain dumb. Or how often do you see it 14 against 15 and either team kicks the farken ball! Someone teach these bastards some maths!
I honestly believe that the players are coached too much and taught not to think. Certainly can't think on their feet.

Another example on Sat, we had won two pens in a row from a line out on their 5 metre line, one more and the Reds would probably have someone in the bin, possibly penalty try, we take a scrum for some reason even though we didn't have scrum dominance.

Yeah that impotence on top of their try line was incredibly frustrating. Full credit to the Reds for their defensive intensity, they really stood up and smacked us back when it counted. Isi's bung try was the backbreaker imo

The Rebels were very inaccurate - endless handling errors, there were a 3 rolling mauls that the Brumbies would've converted, that said the Reds defence was immense.

How has Rob Leota been going? I've been waiting for him to go gangbusters for 12 months now after his physical development but have been underwhelmed. In saying that he must be starting to hit his prime in the next 2-3 years and really think he could be great.

Tough backrow to break into.

Wilkin / Hardwick - both excellent 7's. Wilkin more upside imo.
Naisarani at 8.
Kemeny is a star in the making.

Then Cottrell, Leota and RHP in the wings.

Great depth.

Good video on the Rebels facebook page about their game day routine, flew home from Suncorp on after the game and not in bed till 3:45am. Not unusual routine for away games but they only get to return to some hotel in Terrigal, never quite home. Must be weird experience same goes for the WF.

It’s compounded more because they are 2hrs away from Sydney airport and obviously returning back. Love how they have the blow up beds for the ground, must be a standard practice across all the pro teams as im pretty sure have heard the Reds been doing the same because they have to be at the ground so early for biosecurity reasons.
