How is his scrumming technique looking? Did he play LHP or THP?

A big thank you to Lindommer and son for their hospitality on saturday. I eally enjoyed the Uni-Gordon game and was very refreshing after the tripe that gets served up in Brisbane as Premier Rugby -

Yeah - you could see that he has been a no. 8 before. There wouldn't be too many 8s in the country that have his pace and skills.

He was turned into a prop just 4 years ago at the IRB U/19 tournament on advice from NZ scrum doctor Mike Cron; so he has done bloody well to be playing professional rugby in the front row by last year, let alone in test matches.

I've been disappointed that Kepu hasn't had club game time at THP as it is there where we have our greatest need. And when Hoilles isn't around I'd like to see him get some time at 8 for Randwick also. There was a good chance to play him there when Hoiles was away with the Brumbies, but Maxwell and Mowen are no duds and club coaches have a different agenda.

Maybe one day Tah coach Hickey will see a need to play 4 props on the veldt; so Kepu could provide cover for both the front and the backrows. If that happened it would look good on his CV.

As with any other mobile prop (eg Cowan and Alexander) it would be good to see if he can throw into the lineout. These blokes couldn't be a lot worse than what we saw from Moore and TPN at Newlands.

PS The Randwick scrum wasn't great on Saturday with Kepu playing LHP, IIRR. Manly THP Tim Fairbrother seemed to have his way most of the time.

With Dunning going, Kepu maybe being consider primarily now as cover for Robinson while Palmer covers Baxter

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

No doubt that will be the thinking fat one; but Kepu will have to get a decent share of playing time for the Tahs. Baxter and Fat Cat Robinson probably average 60 minutes a game, to pick a number. With Kepu healthy now, and a Wallaby, he will have to eat into their 60 minutes a bit otherwise the Tahs will have an unhappy camper.

And since Robinson is a specialist LHP it means that Kepu will have to play some at THP to get his time up.

That will conspire to reduce Palmer's time on the park. We can say that he has lots of time but it may be difficult to constrain the young fellow's ambition after being in the sunlit uplands of Super14 rugby earlier in the year, when Kepu and Dunning were injured.

Geez, he is and impressive young player. I saw him at Rat Park playing for Southerns earlier in the season and he has that air of certitude about him as he packs down. He looks like an old stager with his "You may be good but you won't beat me" stare.

They didn't beat him either.

Hopefully they will rotate them throughout the S14

I thought Easts fought hard up front, where Uni often have the wood on other teams. Uni blew some chances in the second half after Easts comprehensively outplayed them in the first 40. I would disagree that Uni were shit; I thought Easts played bloody well. With the ball Uni had in the second half, they could have put on plenty of points but Easts defended superbly; in fact both sides did overall. I don't think Uni have an aura, it's called a bloody good pack that grinds the oppo down most of the time.
To'omua had some good touches - best on ground though? I don't know, maybe would have given DeBartolo that nod, apart from a couple of missed kicks. Halangahu is kicking bloody well - may see his stocks stay high in the S14 next year. Cross would probably have wanted to do more - didn't have a lot of opportunities though.

It amused me to listen to the commentators wondering why uni are so strong in the second half, it is simple, they bring on reserves that would be starters at any other club.

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

Hi All,

Only my second post, Have been bloody struggling to get the time to post, However i have been reading and very much enjoying the posts throughout the forum. I personally got down to Easts today and enjoyed a fine day of club football. Firstly well done to the easts club. Would have to be the biggest club rugby crowd i have seen for some years. Food/service and beers were first class. 40 yr aniversary of easts 1969 1st-2nd-3rd grade premierships so was a super buzz around the ground.

Really was a game of two halves but a quality game of fottball all the same. Easts Have some big men in their pack and they were without doubt up for the occassion. Easts Set peice was very strong all day i thought. The way they contestested the breakdown throughout the game really was a credit to their committment. it also upset unis ability to put phases together. Uni although scoring one try to Easts two were helped by the pin point goal kicking of Halangahu. His game improved as the game went on. A couple of worm burner passes and poor options hampered his game early. To say M To'omua was the best play on the field is a little steep. He had some nice touches but was not a threat to the line nor did he put any of his outside men in gaps.

For Easts. De Bartolo could be anything as a player, Has some great natural ability and speed. His game was hampered by 3-4 mistakes that turned the ball over at key stages for his side. The two Easts second rowers played very well in the tight today. Got through a mountain of work. Irwin the halfback is a big robust fello who picks his options well. Cross Very quite. Thought he lacked penetration when he got the ball a few times. None the less he is a fine footballer. The fullback showed some good options also. Lacks a yard of pace but has a good game sense

For Uni, Well their second half was much improved on their first. Young Mitch Inman who i wrote about in my first post came on in the second half at 13, bringing Carter to his more familiar role of no 12. Inman showed some very good touches. Carter had a great second half himself with some great carries and rattled a few blokes in defence. They got the better of Cross and Azar for mine. In the pack the standouts for me were McCallman. The backrower playing in the second row. Got round the corner to run the ball well and was active around the ruck. Davidson again showed why he is probably the most unlucky footballer in the country not to have a contract. Geez he must have killed a chinaman.

The pleasing thing for me was the quality of the game and the size of the crowd. Much has been spoken about of the ARC and its influence on Aust rugby uncovering future super 14 players. Todays fixture and standard showed me why club rugby still has a place. Was a real sense of passion in both jerseys today and the standard as good or better than ARC IMO. The next 6 weeks should see a great brand of football across the comp.

regards

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

Bloody Uni. They didn't play well but they pulled another game out of their arses. As I have said before - these blokes have to be beaten by the end on May.

We knew from the commentators, if we didn't know anyway, that Uni finished stronger than other teams because so many of their players had a backlog of S14 fitness, but it still sounded funny to hear the commentators say after oranges that Easts had better score next. They were 12-3 in front, IIRR, for crying out loud.

Yeah DeBart could be anything as a player, and I wish the USA rugby team well, but he's got something different in his strands of DNA. There's a gene or two missing, or extra, that makes him do dopey, low percentage things. Maybe he is distant kin to Christopher Columbus - another risk taker of Italian heritage.

Yeah Matt To'omua had a good game with a few mistakes, but one gets the feeling that the more mistakes he makes the more they will be flushed from his system. He is developing well as a 19 y.o. and soon will be too good to play 2nd or 3rd fiddle to Giteau at the Brumbies.

Wouldn't it be ironic if he returned home to Queensland to play for the Reds in 2011 and Lealiifano did likewise to Victoria, to play for the Melbourne team? But I digress.

Yeah Carter played well, and as 13. He was like a young pup zipping around the park, and McCalman goes from strength to strength. John Mitchell will enjoy watching a recording of the game and his efforts. I thought that Uni fullback Trist had a good game too.

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

I was going to go to Rat Park to see the Pirates play the Rats and probably watch Tuqiri play union for the last time but went to see Joeys play Grammar instead.

The mighty Rats won 23-16 to keep their finals hopes alive but apparently Lote had a top match despite little Jordan Macey chipping over him to score a try. According to a report in the paper Lote got a good hand from the Rats crowd, a rare treat for a visiting player. He said that support from people has been great including when he is walking down the street - and that it was great to get on the park again.

In other news Tyrone Smith played flyhalf today for Manly against Gordon today despite most of the Brumbies players being rested after their tour in France. I wonder how he went in the 10 jersey.

During the week Ben Coridas of Eastwood and Ben Mowen of Randwick, both of the Waratahs stable, had operations to end their seasons. Coridas had a shoulder reconstruction and Mowen had an anteror ligament repaired.

Eastwood President and ABC TV commentator, Brett Papworth, wouldn't have been happy about the injury to Coridas and neither would he have been happy that the ABC had scheduled Eastwood's Round 20 match against Randwick for next weekend. This is the bye weekend used for catchup games and often scheduled for the Saturday when a Bledisloe match is on in town.

This weekend most of the returning Brumbies players were being rested and Eastwood would have had an easier game.

It's a pity that the ABC didn't plan to have a schools game on as they do sometimes in the bye weekend. Joeys are playing Riveriew at Hunters Hill next weekend and that is usually one of the biggest schools game of the year in Sydney.

Dropped into Rat Park to see most of the game, but I have to disagree with the SMH journo's claim that Tuqiri "showed why he's still regarded as the best winger in international rugby". He really didn't stand out (despite the red boots) as much as made out in the article, couple of nice touches, some good hitups, but he also got turned over a bit and dropped the ball in contact.

Sam Harris looked unfit and somewhat clueless at 10, and was lucky he had Sheehan inside him to keep the Rats going forward. Was impressed with the Warringah 15 though, didn't have a program so no idea who it was...

Must have been - he definitely played even though the Brumbies players were supposed to be rested - and he was listed to play fullback. He was the best player for the Brumbies on their tour and must be in great form.

If he keeps his good form in the Brumbies trial matches he must be a show for the 22.

Well done that Rat.

Gordon got over Manly in the Sunday game:

Gordon v Manly at Chatswood Oval (Sunday 16 August)

After being edged out of the top six yesterday, Gordon have leapfrogged back into playoff position with a 32-23 victory over Manly at Chatswood Oval.

The Marlins jumped out to a 20-13 lead at the break, however the Highlanders hit back hard in the second half, scoring a bonus point win to grab a share of fifth place.

Adam D’Arcy scored all 23 points for Manly, however it was not enough to keep Gordon at bay as they came home with three second half tries to nil.

The Marlins remain in second position despite the loss with Randwick still to play Eastwood next week in a match which will conclude round 20.

The result however ends West Harbour’s finals hopes, with the Pirates ten points outside the top six with just two matches remaining.

Gordon 32 (Craig Thomas, Matt McDougall, Siketi Vunipola, Terry Preston tries; Dave Harvey 3 cons, 2 pens) d Manly 23 (Adam D’Arcy 2 tries; Adam D’Arcy 3 pens, 2 cons) at Chatswood Oval. Referee: Steve Hardy. HT: Manly 20-13.

Saturday 22 August 2009 – Randwick v Eastwood at Coogee Oval

At least one Aussie Green n Gold team had a win this weekend. Wonderful, heart-stopping game from the mighty Highlanders against the Woods yesterday.
