I mentioned surprise at Rokobaro being picked at 15 last week, and see he is at 12 tomorrow. How versatile is he and can anyone comment on how he went last week?

Can't tell you anything about Alex - maybe Bruce Ross or topo can give you a comment. They are Uni men.
I think that Alex is, at this stage of his career, a specialist winger. His selections at 15 and 12 would probably be due to the large number of Uni players who are involved in Super 14 or recovering from injury.

He is very talented and runs low to the ground with a great swerve, a bit like the classic Reg Gasnier style - for the benefit of those members who are antediluvian. I know that the Australian Sevens selectors were very interested in him but he didn't want to give up the chance of playing for Fiji in the future. His Dad is Fijian as might be presumed and his Mum is Anglo-Australian.

Watched of Southern Districts against Manly. I think Manly really did the win. That being said, both teams looked pretty good, I thought Radike Samo was playing in France

Samo just signed a short term contract with the Reds to cover Humphries

Local derby weekend and some really interesting match ups this week:
- obviously the TV game is a big one, early test for 2 of the big contenders, have Easts improved enough this year to take on a strong Randwick side.
- Gordon vs the big surprise package in Norths, Gordon will be desperate for a win but Norths have their tail up and will be full of confidence following 2 good wins.
- Eastwood vs West Harbour - West Harbour desperate for a first win and Eastwood wanting to bounce back after their shock defeat to Norths
- Manly vs Warringah - Warringah desperate here
- Uni vs. Southern Districts - this may tell us whether Southern are legitimate contenders.

I'll be down at Gordon vs Norths, if you asked me 2 weeks ago I thought Gordon would put 50 on them but Norths have really start it well so this game is shaping up as a cracker. I'm interested to see how Pete Smith goes at this level - he played 10 for Gordon 3rd grade last year. In other Gordon news, I mentioned Ben Perriera earlier in the thread had come over from NZ - he has now picked up an NPC contract and will head home next week.

Souths have signed Gareth Morton this week and he is at 12 this weekend. Morton played league and union in Britain, and was named in the Scotland squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, but injuries prevented him playing.

Souths are down a lot of quality from last wekeend and I think they will lose.

Did any other lower graders move on at Gordon last season to other clubs?

Gordon Golden Oldies are playing the Gordon 5th grade team first thing on Saturday. After that I'll be helping with the BBQ duties. Come over and say g'day - and more importantly but a lovely steak sandwich!!

What happened to Hercus btw? And what's the prognosis on Jared Barry's shoulder?

Hercus could possibly play this weekend - he will test himself out tonight at training. If he comes back in Harvey goes to 15, Preston to 13, and Whittaker to 2s.

Jared Barry - can't tell you exactly but heard it could be a lengthy layout and surgery may be required.

Will be over for a steak sandwich straight after 4th grade and will probably grab another one during 2nd grade... they better be tender!

Interstate rugby fans please note that the Shute Shield match of the day is telecast live on ABC HD, a free to air channel, which is also carried by Foxtel (Channel 202).

We can certainly watch it here in Queensland.

Eastern suburbs 32 defeated the Evildoers from Randwick 20 at Coogee.

Randwick quickly got off to a 12 point lead thanks to some basic errors by Easts. Easts came back courtesy of some magic from big fullback Pat Dellit and stronger play up front. Randwick will be kicking themselves, they really gave away all the momentum in the 2nd half.

Best for Randwick were flanker Vanderglas and no8 Meyer, and Gene Fairbanks was dangerous in the 1st half - he gave Easts' defence fits. Not sure why Danny Kroll isn't playing 10 for the Greens, he'd do a lot better than the fat veteran 3rd grade hooker they have there now !

Best for Easts were Dellit, flanker Stanford, and halfback Brendan McKibbin. I don't rate McKibbin highly as a rep prospect but he does seem to have a bit of magic & X factor about him.

Gordon threw their game away with the last play, what looked like a knock on in the in-goal area which Norths pounced on to score a match-levelling try. Luckily they missed the conversion so it finished in a draw. Gordon looking like they still have plenty of work to do this season, North very much improved.

Steaks and snags at the BBQ seemed to go down very well. Sold out of everything by the time 1st grade started. Chef must have been doing something right ;)

Uni were poor in the 1st half against Souths and let in 2 fairly soft tries with poor goal line defence. They had a few shots at PG which were all missed and went in 19-0 down at half time. This very young side just didn't look up to it. Must have been something in the half time water though. Came out with a lot more intent and aggression and scored 3 good tries of their own. Goal kicking let them down and they lost 19-17. I thought they did enough to win it and the young guys will have learned a lot. Best for Uni were Pat McCutcheon (by a mile - fantastic game) and Sam Carter. Alex Rokobaro did some good things and Peter Betham was threatening when he came on early in the 2nd half and scored almost with his 1st touch. I think Uni can take a lot out of this close loss. Warringah at Rat Park will be interesting next week.
Watching the form of McCalman, Inman, Charles, Weeks, Waugh, Carter, Hangers, Caldwell et al has given me some encouragement for the season a bit later on. And Tim Davidson, Nathan Trist, Nick Phipps, and Bernard Foley are close to recovering from their injuries. Phipps, in particular, looked good off the bench in 3s and then 2s yesterday.

Eastwood vs West Harbour was a cracker, after a dour first half (dour, but not tah's vs Brumbies dour...) the second half really opened up and some late trys gave the Woodies the win.

Sione Piukala looks the goods, should get him into the Junior Tah's. Anyone know much about him? Seemed to do a hell of a lot of work and noone matches his go forward in the Woodies backline. John Grant also looks like a talent. Keep an eye out for those two.

McCaffrey was solid, and Hugh Perrett was pretty consistent too. Lineout was a big problem though, and the throwing seemed to be the main issue.

Piukala from the North Shore(around Hornsby area) played for Hornsby Rugby Club pretty sure, obviously tongan heritage. Did play Subbies with his mates for a while and might have even represented Tonga in a World Cup squad or something like that.

But grew up in Hornsby.

What do we reckon? Chance for the Tah's? How old is he?
