ROUND FIVE:

This is a really exciting round this week as there are some great matchups across the board. Albury v Aggies is easily match of the round while at the other end of the spectrum, we have Temora v RARC fighting for points as well as the mid-table clash between Coota and City.

CSU (3) v Leeton (9) @ Beres Ellwood Oval +10

Leeton manned up against an unsuspecting Steamers outfit in the MIA last week and will travel to “Beres Ellwood Oval +10” this week with some fire in the tank in round five. CSU are coasting along at the moment and still have plenty of things to work on if coach Cannon Banks is correct in his musings in the DA. Mitch Fealy has been a standout for the Reddies so far this year and has been tested in several positions over the past four rounds and will return to the sting this week. Leeton need to take their home form on the road and make CSU work for every metre this week as they did to Albury last week.

Tahs (4) v Griffith (8) @ Conolly Rugby Park

This is an intriguing matchup here and I’m sure Tahs would be nervous leading into this one as Griffith are capable of playing some good footy when it counts while Tahs have been patchy at best so far this season. Following their 80 point drubbing of RARC last week Tahs will have some confidence coming into this match, while Griffith lost at the Coro Club they were well served by Ben Martin and Michael Stally who both put in solid performances. Tahs will be happy to welcome Manning Doughty to the fold and they will need a big bopper like Manning to take on the Griffith pack and give them some go forward.

Temora (12) v RARC (11) @ Temora Recreation Ground

Bottom of the table clash here this week and I think it will be a tough day out for Temora as they essentially are hosting two separate clubs this week which means both visiting grades will have fresh reserves for their matches while Temora won’t. Hay made light work of Tahs last week and they will be pumped to do the same against Temora this week while RARC have been putting in plenty of effort for little reward so far this season. The first grade fixture will be a close affair at Temora Recreation Ground, there will be some solid defence and ball running on show in the centres. RARC may have a slight advantage in the forwards, but Temora have some handy backs in Campbell Maxwell, Bill McCrone and Matt Swanston who can do some damage.

Albury (1) v Aggies (2) MATCH OF THE ROUND @ Murrayfield

Top of the table clash this week with Aggies travelling to fortress Murrayfield with some cracking form behind them and some whopping runs on the board so far this season. Looking at the for and against figures, both clubs are evenly matched with Albury bagging one more bonus point than Aggies. Across the park both teams have well balanced forward packs, with Albury having a slight edge in the backs as Justin Wheatley has more experience than Dan Moloney at first five. As much as it is early in the season, fitness may be a deciding factor here as Albury are still building while Aggies have had such impressive numbers at their pre-season that everyone has had to work hard for their spot in First Grade. My mail says that Aggies have got some great systems in place and also show outstanding patience for the full 80mins while Albury are still adding these skills to their repertoire. It will be great to see what Richard Turnbull and Don Cameron, who are arguably the standout coaches in the zone, have been plotting for this game.

Young (5) v Tumut (10) @ Cranfield Oval

Tumut were pipped at the post at home last week in what was a good hitout for them as a club, although the result didn’t go their way, they stuck to it for 80mins which is positive. Young were on the wrong end of an Ag College hiding last week which will have highlighted where their strengths and weaknesses lie at this stage of the season. Tumut are in the process of rebuilding their club after the “retirement” of Jock Mason (don’t tell his missus that he played on Saturday) and they still have a way to go in terms of their combinations and options during the game. Young halfback Seth Stoltenberg has been enduring a baptism of fire in his first year of First Grade footy and will need to guide his forwards around the paddock with plenty of yap this weekend.

Coota (7) v City (6) @ Cootamundra Beach Rugby Park

After getting out of jail against Tumut at Jarrah Park last weekend, Coota have a tough game against a strong City side in Round Five. Although this is a middle of the table clash this weekend, for me the deciding factor in this game is the for and against records of both clubs. Only one competition point separates City and Coota while City enjoy a 59 point points differential against Coota’s 9 point points differential. Looking at past results, both teams had similar games against Aggies with City losing 29-8 and Coota losing 40-7 so nothing to split them on there. This game could go either way, both forward packs will be reasonably evenly match, City may have the edge in the backs. Look out for Alex Hardie who is in good form for Coota.

I'll predict around 25-10 Aggies over the Steamers in both grades this weekend. From what I can tell the Steamers are still playing around 70% - wether they can make up the balance early in the year I am not sure. They played against Leeton with about 12/13 guys out and another 3/4 gone for the season.

ROUND FIVE RESULTS:

CSU 57 bt Leeton 13
Tahs 39 bt Griffith 12
Temora 70 bt RARC 3
Albury 39 bt Aggies 18
Tumut 22 bt Young 15
City 52 bt Coota 17

How about that Albury Aggies result? I expected it to be closer than that!

ROUND SIX:

Aggies (4) v CSU (2) @ Beres Ellwood +10 MATCH OF THE ROUND

Bragging rights on campus are on the line this week as the two Uni sides battle it out in what will be a very willing match this week. Aggies were brought back to earth last week and will be out to make amends for some poor defensive techniques so look out Reddies! CSU have been plugging away nicely to be sitting at number 2 on the ladder with all to play for in Round Six. For CSU, not much can really be gained from their efforts against Leeton last week although it was a good win, they were barely tested, particularly in the backs. Aggies may have some work to do in their forwards after losing at Murrayfield last week (this may also have something to do with their selection policy though). SIRU selectors will have any opportunity to cast their eyes over some potential rep players in this match with Jack Burey and Peter Armstrong being two players to watch in their contest at halfback. Looking forward to a big hitout at the Uni this week in what is always a big day on the uni calendar!

Leeton (11) v Tahs (3) @ Murrumbidgee College Fields, Yanco

Leeton host an unfit Waratahs outfit this week in what is a danger game for the Tahs at this stage of the season. Leeton’s forwards are their strength and will take it to the boys in blue at home in an effort to get in their faces and pressure them at the set piece. Waratahs came away with the biscuits against Griffith in what can only be described as a very scrappy game. Injuries have cost the Tahs dearly so far this season (add to that the huge player changeover) and they were dropping like flies last week (even during the warmup!) so player availability may be an issue for Waratahs. If you look at the competition table, these two teams are at opposite ends of the spectrum but I think this will be a close, tough match this week.

Griffith (9) v Temora (10) @ Coro Club Ground

Griffith scrapped it out against Waratahs last week while Temora were racking up the points at home against RARC but I think this will be a tight one at the Coro Club in Griffith, with Griffith having a slight advantage in the forward pack and Temora having some handy operators in their backline. Ben Martin has been performing well for the Blacks so far this season and will need to be at the top of his game this week to tame the likes of Adam Bensch in the Temora forwards. A quick statistical analysis shows that Temora have the mustard on Griffith in the For and Against stakes with a much better attacking and defensive record, will this have an impact on the outcome?

City (5) v RARC (12) @ Conolly Rugby Park

The City Men are on a roll at the moment and are racking up some decent performances so far, while poor old RARC have been hit by injuries and unavailability’s in a big way. City’s effort against Coota at the Kuta Beach last week was impressive given that the Tri Colours play well at home and put City under plenty of pressure early on. It’s good to see City playing some decent rugby at the moment, let’s hope they continue building on their good recent form and build towards a top 6 finish. Plenty of punters in the zone have been crediting City’s Kiwi halfback Sam King and Pommy 5/8 Hamish Wrafter with the team’s much improved performances this season and they deserve some wraps for their efforts.

Tumut (8) v Albury (1) @ Jarrah Park

Was that Jock Mason playing at home again last week? Will he be there this week? Tumut have put in some hearty performances in recent weeks, but they have their work cut out for them this week against a classy Steamers outfit, Albury put in a cracking performance to down the much vaunted Ag College team at Murrayfield last week and will travel to Jarrah Park with plenty of confidence coming into this match.

Coota (6) v Young (7) @ Illabo Showground

Local derby and one of the best days of bush footy in the region here! The Illabo Ambush is a great day of footy played at the small town of Illabo and one that will attract a massive, enthusiastic crowd to the Illabo Pub (and General Store) post match. This will be a great match to watch and one that will show both teams whether they can make it in the Top 6 or not. Coota have been playing some good footy but need to tighten up on a few areas of their game if they are to threaten the Top 6 later in the year while the Yabbies have been putting in some solid performances across the park. The Yabbies need to get up in this one to hold out hope of making the Top 6. Looking at the For and Against of both teams (they are only separated by one competition point at 6 & 7 on the ladder) Young have a slightly better For and Against Differential given that they have scored more points than Coota but Coota have a slightly better defensive record. This game is going to be tight, I wonder what impact it will have later in the season as teams are vying for positions in the Top 6?

Pete and Jack may not play as close on the field as first thought

This is interesting, I know there has been talk that Pete would be playing with a number 7 on his back to give the 2nd grade half back a shot.

Where's Jack playing?

Allen Oxlade (6)
pete usually plays as an extra backrower so this is no suprise, word is jack might find himself in the path of tim corcoran destruction.

Desmond Connor (43)
SIRU First Trimester Summary:

I thought it was time to have a quick review of the season after 6 Rounds, teams are listed in their current ladder positions. There is enough speculation in the zone about who will play Premier (Top 6) and First (Bottom 6) Divisions, you can make up your own minds about who will play where!!

Albury (1)
After shaking off some early season drama, it’s hard to see anything but a top two finish for the Steamers at this stage of the season given their solid form to this point in the competition. Relatively injury free, Albury should remain a dominant force in the competition for the remaining weeks before the split. Albury bowed out in tragic form during the finals last year to the Reddies and will be using this as a motivational tool to send off Nathan Bright in what is his (allegedly) final year with the Steamers.

Waratahs (2)
If Tahs want to make it a treble this year, they have some work to do. Tahs should make the Top 6 but from then on it will be tough going for them if things stay the way they are on the Premiers training paddock. 2012 was always going to be a tough gig backing up after winning back to back premierships particularly given the number of players who have exited the club since last season, it’s up to the boys who are at the club to dig in and work hard for the remainder of the year.

Aggies (3)
With such strong numbers out at the College, Aggies are spoilt for choice across the park. Aggies strength is in their depth at the moment with any number of 2nd Grade players capable of stepping into First Grade. Having a quick squiz at the draw, Aggies have played some tough matches already and should be confident of finishing the season in a very commanding position. Although there are a number of new faces at the club this year, the memories of 2010 and 2011 GF appearances will be motivating the Aggies.

City (4)
2012 has seen City rise like Lazarus after some disappointing recent seasons, the next question is can they cut it in Premier Division? A more controlled, composed City team in 2012 has been characterised by a harder edge in their forward pack and great service from 9 to 10. City’s forward pack have been handy enough in recent seasons but they have really stepped up this year, depth may be an issue for the City Men particularly when the competition splits.

CSU (5)
Nothing too flashy out at CSU this year but they are always a danger team for a number of clubs in the zone and are experts at finals footy. They will plug away during the season and play smart footy when it counts. Reddies have some genuine pace out wide and a good halves combination but may need some more mustard in the tight five to support the rest of the team.

Coota (6)
Cootamundra have won the First Division Premiership for the past two seasons and will go very close to making the Premier Division in 2012. Ben Brown has guided his backline around the park very well in recent matches, ably supported by the likes of Alex Hardie in the backrow. Consistency is the key for Coota coming into the final rounds, Rounds 9 and 10 is where it counts for Cootamundra.

Young (7)
The Yabbies have put honest enough performances to date, but may find it tough going through the mid section of the season given that they play teams who are positioned above them on the ladder. Young may be rejuvenated by the likes of the barnstorming Aaron Seaman moving to town, there will be some close games for the Yabbies if the are to scrape into Premier Division and the Yabbies fortunes will go North if Seaman has a run for them.

Temora (8)
The Tuskers have had a tough draw to kick off the season having played all but Aggies and Coota from the current top 6 teams. Temora are blessed with some handy operators, particularly in the backs, maybe some balance is required with their forward pack though. As per Coota, Rounds 10 and 11 is where their season will be defined.

Tumut (9)
Rebuilding on the back of Jock Mason and other key player retirements, 2012 was always going to be a baptism of fire for rookie Coach Tim Graham. The Bulls have been pulling together in recent weeks and putting in more consistent efforts as a team, this needs to continue in an effort to set a platform for the second stage of the season.

Griffith (10)
The Blacks are probably unlucky to be where they are on the ladder but haven’t been doing themselves any favours to get their season off the ground. Coach Clint Robinson has had a tough time of it in the early stages of the season with player unavailability denting team morale. In Griffith’s favour is the fact that they have played most of the Top 6 teams already and could go close to making it into the Top 6 if a few results go their way.

Leeton (11)
Are a much improved outfit although their ladder position may not show it, the Phantoms forward pack is their strength while solid performances from Danny Booth at 5/8 have assisted his team greatly this season. Expect the Phantoms to test a few teams in the final rounds before the split.

RARC (12)
Commitment to each other and the club are what matters for these guys at the moment. RARC are not having a great season on the field and injuries have certainly not helped their cause this season, but these guys definitely do not give up and play a full 80mins week in week out. If they can continue to display these qualities on the field, things will turn around eventually.

Johnnie Wallace (23)
From the teams I have seen play this year, I would add a couple of things. I think Temora has a bit to offer, of the bottom half they seem the most likely to harden up after the season split. Can maybe get a better comparison after this weeks round. The Steamers have only played 1 of the other teams in the top 6 so far this year. And I must say I was surprised by how soft and disorganised the Aggies were. I wonder if it is a reflection of the team rotation policy, where players are coming back through the lower grades. I have no doubt the second half of the season will see a much harder and angrier green and gold outfit. The Steamers are probably at around 80% with large numbers getting rested between the hard games I think.

ROUND SEVEN:

CSU (5) v Tumut (9) @ Beres Ellwood +10
CSU got off to a sleepy start against the Aggies last week and won’t want to make the same mistake again this week against the Bulls. Tumut played the entire 80mins against the fancy Steamers last week but were outclassed across the park. Paul Hood, Jack Burey and Pat Hunter were standouts for the Reddies last week and their combinations and support this week will go a long way to setting a winning platform for the Reddies.

Tahs (2) v Aggies (3) @ Conolly Rugby Park MATCH OF THE ROUND
Aggies looked well-polished against the Reddies last week and it will be interesting to see how they fair against the boys in blue this week given that neither team are at 100% at the moment. Tahs are in a similar position to the Aggies in terms of injuries and will need all the tricks that Coach Mick Barrett can muster to get away with a win this weekend. Matt Binks has been a revelation for the Tahs in the centres so far this season, his interaction with Xavier Chigwidden will be good to watch. Dan Moloney and Chris Stott played out of their skins against CSU which will be a good confidence boost for these two young players coming into the 2010 Grand Final replay.

Temora (8) v Leeton (11) @ Temora Recreation Ground
Danny Booth was a standout for the Phantoms last week against the Tahs and Leeton need another cracker from him this week against the Tuskers. The matchup between Danny and Bill McCrone will be central to the outcome of this match. The name of the game this weekend for Temora is to get a win up and to make sure their new Fijian imports get out of Sydney in one piece. My mail says that the car will be ready and waiting for them at Sydney Airport with a full tank of fuel – Welcome to Australia, next stop sunny Temora!

RARC (12) v Griffith (10) @ Hay Sportsground
RARC and Griffith are travelling to Hay this weekend as part of RARC forfeiting 2nd Grade for the season. The Hay Sportsground is one of two grounds in the zone that runs east/west and is a tough ground to play at. Griffith were pipped at the post last weekend against Temora with a failed penalty attempt on the bell bouncing off the upright to hand Temora a two point victory, I would suggest a different result will be on the cards this week. I'll also be interested to hear if any Hay boys play for RARC in 1st Grade, there are some handy players in that Hay 2nd Grade team.

Albury (1) v Coota (6) @ Murrayfield
This is a tough trip for the Tri-Colours as they trek down the Olympic Way to fortress Murrayfield. The Steamers are at the top of their game at the moment, they have some areas to improve on but must be pretty impressed with themselves to date. From the forwards perspective, these two teams are fairly evenly matched, Cootamundra have been working on some combinations in their backline in recent weeks and it will be interesting to see how these come together against the Steamers.

Young (7) v City (4) @ Cranfield Oval
The Yabbies have their work cut out for themselves here, taking on a confident City outfit at Cranfield Oval and need solid performances from Zac Davidson and Nic Walker this week. Wagga City are improving from week to week on the back of sound efforts from Hamish Wrafter, Joe Tora and Keegan Thornhill and providing they can maintain their current attitude should give the Yabbies a workout this week. Young will be sweating on the signature of boom second/back rower Aaron Seaman who has moved to town in his role with Elders.

Not much to get out of reddies Tumut due to the rain. Tumut lacked numbers in both grades while away, but reddies dominated possession with a lot of dropped ball

Surely the most significant score this round is Ag 26 Tahs 5. Is the crown slipping on the Tahs' heads? Is their reign at the top over?
