ROUND EIGHT:

Coota (6) v CSU (4) @ Kuta Beach MATCH OF THE ROUND
This is an important match for both clubs due to their respective ladder positions, Coota need to walk away from this match with as many points as they can muster and CSU need to maintain their recent performances against what will be some solid opposition. Coota came up against an in form Steamers outfit last week and limped back up the Olympic Way with the knowledge that they have some work to do if they are to remain competitive with the Top 6 teams. CSU blooded young Tom Adamson at openside last week and he rewarded them with an outstanding performance which will give Cannon Banks some selection headaches at openside breakaway this week. This match is going to be a tough match for both teams as points are vital for survival at this stage of the competition.

Tumut (10) v Tahs (5) @ Jarrah Park
Tumut gutsed it out for 80mins against the Reddies last week but were unable to come away with the win, although they didn’t get up against CSU, the Bulls should take some confidence from their efforts against some pretty accomplished opposition. Tahs were outmuscled by the Aggies in what was a pretty dour affair last week and will be keen to show their critics that they mean business when they head to the hills this week. Jayden Stanton and Gerard McTaggart have been in decent form so far this year which I’m sure Coach Mick Barrett will be pleased with, he will want these two youngsters to fire against the Bulls as a signal of intent to the other Top 6 clubs.

Aggies (3) v Temora (7) @ Beres Elwood +10
Aggies Coach Richard Turnbull was not pleased with his troops win against Tahs last week, so Temora may be in the firing line this week as the Aggies look to redeem themselves in their Coach’s eyes. The Tuskers put in a solid display against the Phantoms in Leeton last week and will be keen for gun breakaway Adam Bensch to step back into First Grade this week after a lay off with an ankle complaint. Temora have been screaming up the ladder in recent weeks after a tough few rounds to start off with but this week is a real test for them.

Leeton (11) v RARC (12) @ Murrumbidgee College Fields
The battle for points will be fierce in this bottom of the table clash between the Phantoms and the Soldiers this week! Leeton are at home for the second week in a row which is always good, while RARC are on the road for the second week in a row which will be tough going for them. Leeton’s forward pack have been their strength this season while RARC never lay down for the duration of the match. It will be interesting to see who bags the points in this match as both teams are winless at this stage of the season.

City (2) v Griffith (9) @ Conolly Rugby Park
Wagga City put in a decent performance in some pretty ordinary conditions at Young last week while Griffith made life tough for themselves against RARC at Hay. Griffith have some talent but need more numbers to commit to the club if these reports are anything to go by, this trip to Wagga may be what the Black’s need to get their season back on track? City’s 5/8 Hamish Wrafter led his team around the park in good form in the wet last week and had solid support from his forward pack which is always good news. City will be happy to be back at home this week and will be keen to get stuck into Griffith as they continue their revival in 2012.

Young (8) v Albury (1) @ Cranfield Oval
Although the score line was pretty one sided last week, the Yabbies kept on coming against City right until the death with some solid performances from Zach Davidson and Nic Walker and these guys will need to stand up against the Steamers. Albury put Cootamundra through the wringers and really showed the competition that they mean business down on the border, I would think that Albury will be full of confidence when they make their biggest road trip of the season this week.

CSU probably has one of their best forward packs for the year lining up - how they perform should make or break the match for them

BRUMBIES PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT:

General Bye this weekend in SIRU for the June Long Weekend.

The Brumbies Provincial Tournament will be hosted by SIRU in Wagga Wagga this weekend.

SIRU v Monaro 3pm Saturday at Conolly Park

Monaro v Far South Coast 2pm Sunday at Conolly Park

SIRU v Far South Coast 11am Monday at Conolly Park

I don’t have much mail on the other teams in the tournament, but the local rag have been covering the tournament pretty well – see here, here and here.

I picked up today’s DA and read up on the player profiles (see attached), one thing that has to be said is:

What sort of relationship does Waratahs front rower James Daley have with Pam Whaley?

Fair Dinkum, what’s doing there?

ROUND NINE PREVIEW:

Looks like an exciting round this week after the local rep program is done and dusted, there are some big match ups this week with an obvious Match of the Round when Albury host City in the top of the table clash. Coota and Temora both have big games this week as they prepare for their do or die match next week, another entertaining match will be the MIA showdown when Leeton travel to Griffith with their best shot in recent years of knocking off the Blacks at the Coro Club.

CSU (4) v Young (8) @ Beres Ellwood +10
Life doesn’t get any easier for the Yabbies when they come to Wagga this weekend to take on the Reddies out at the Uni. Young have been on the wrong end of some close results so far this season and will be looking to make amends against CSU. The Reddies on the other hand have just been plugging away with not much fuss, notching up enough wins to be in the top 4. They have flown under the radar to a certain extent this season as all the hype is focussed on how well Albury, City and Ag College are travelling and how Waratahs are not the team they were in 2010 and 2011. Keep an eye on the Reddies, they will be a danger when it matters.

Tahs (5) v Coota (6) @ Conolly Rugby Park
This could be a danger game for the Tahs, Waratahs are in a similar position to Reddies at the moment, 6 wins 2 losses and (you would have to think) are guaranteed a spot in the Top 6. On the other side of the fence sits Cootamundra who will be super keen for a win in Wagga which would (almost) cement their place in the Top 6. The Cootamundra forwards will take it to the Tahs in what will be a solid battle up front. It will be interesting to see how Waratahs bounce back after having a large number of players play rep footy over the long weekend, while Cootamundra should be refreshed after having the weekend off.

Temora (7) v Tumut (11) @ Temora Recreation Ground
Although the scoreline read 45-5 against Temora in Round 8, the game was anything but easy for the Aggies with Temora really giving it to the College Boys all match. Temora’s backline were in good form that day, putting together one of the classier Tuskers backlines in recent years. Tumut have their work cut out for themselves heading across to the Temora Recreation Ground and will be looking for a big performance from Will Reynolds to get them on the front foot.

RARC (12) v Aggies (3) = Forfeit in both grades
No games for Ag College this week due to RARC forfeiting 1st Grade due to a lack of numbers, Hay had always planned on not playing out of town this weekend due to the Hay Sheep Show being held this weekend. Not good news for RARC or the competition for 2012 and moving into 2013.

Griffith (9) v Leeton (10) @ Coro Club
This match could well be Leeton’s best shot at knocking off the Blacks in a while at the Coro Club as Griffith have had a tough season to date both on and off the field, while the Phantoms are slowly getting back on their feet after a few lean years. The Leeton forward pack are showing some promising signs and will really put it to the Blacks through their tight five this week, they are ably backed up by Inside Centre Danny Booth. Griffith have some good talent in their team with Michael Jones playing well for them in recent weeks. The Blacks need to be wary of the Phantoms in this match.

Albury (1) v City (2) @ Murrayfield – MATCH OF THE ROUND
This Top of the Table clash easily takes the match of the round tag and both sides are in some handy form. Wagga City must be pinching themselves after their last few seasons and this match is exactly what they need to test themselves. The biggest turn around for City has come from the likes of Hamish Wrafter, Sam King and Joe Tora as they have really provided the polish to what was already a team with potential. After playing Tahs and Aggies in the early rounds, City have not played another top 4 team since Round 2 so this weekend will really be the test that will show the competition what they are made of. Albury are in a similar position to City in that they face a pretty tough run into the split on the back of games against City, CSU and Tahs in consecutive weeks. Joe Tora and Nathan Bright will have their work cut out for themselves at #8 while the matchup between Hamish Wrafter and Richard Manion at 5/8 will be great to watch, Louis Levett was in good form playing for SIRU and will be hard to stop.

So this week sees some important games for different reasons. Albury v CSU is probably match of the round and will showcase some handy local talent, but the importance of the Coota v Temora match for those two clubs is immense. Disappointing news that RARC have pulled the pin which will have the SIRU Board working overtime to get some contingency plans in place for the split in a few weeks’ time.

ROUND TEN PREVIEW:

Albury (1) v CSU (3) @ Murrayfield MATCH OF THE ROUND?
Plenty of questions will be asked of these two teams this week as Albury continue on with a tough few final games of the regular season. This match will be defined by the battle of the forwards and how the two 5/8’s marshall their troops around the park. Old head Paul Hood might teach young pup Richard Manion a few lessons this week, but we’ll have to wait and see. Pat Hunter will have his work cut out for him trying to contain Louie Levett on the side of the scrum. All in all, there is plenty to play for for both sides here and the outcome will be provide an insight into who will be in contention at finals time.

Young (9) v Tahs (5) @ Cranfield Oval
Aaron Seaman had his first run for the Yabbies at his old home ground last week and will be keen to give it to the Tahs this week in what will be a willing encounter at a cold Cranfield Oval this weekend. The Tahs are in contact with the top 4 clubs and will be keen to maintain that progress this week against the Yabbies as they attempt to build some momentum into the Top 6.

Coota (7) v Temora (6) @ Kuta Beach MATCH OF THE ROUND?
It’s do or die time for these two teams as they endeavour to make the Top 6, Cootamundra probably have a slight home ground advantage but they will need to keep their wits about them as they take on the flash Temora backline. This match will highlight Coota’s hard working forward pack and also show off Temora’s enterprising backline which will be fascinating to see two contrasting styles of play on what will be a wet Kuta Beach. The importance of this match to these two up and coming teams cannot be highlighted enough.

Tumut (11) v RARC (12) @ Jarrah Park
RARC Forfeit = 30-0 bonus point win for Tumut

Ag College (2) v Griffith (8) @ Beres Ellwood Oval +10
This game is a tough ask for the Blacks and a big trek for them to come to Wagga to take on an in-form Ag College team. If you were watching the Ag College 3rd Grade last week, you may have been mistaken for thinking you were watching 1st Grade with the likes of Peter Armstrong and Joe Reynolds lacing up the boots. Such are the numbers at Aggies that these guys have had to come back through 3rd Grade and aren’t guaranteed a start in 1st Grade this week either.

City (4) v Leeton (10) @ Conolly Rugby Park
The City Men will be keen to keep their 2012 revival on track this week but they need to be wary of the Leeton forward pack as the Phantoms tight five have really stood up this year and will put City to the test this week. My mail says that Joe Tora has been the igniter that the City forward pack have needed to spark them this year and his efforts have gone a long way to keeping them fired up throughout the 80mins week in week out. Danny Booth will be keen to test himself against SIRU rep player Hamish Wrafter and this matchup will be good to watch as both players have been in great form this year.

namtrak

Johnnie Wallace (23)
Joe Tora was the catalyst for forward motion from the City pack last week and they had a couple of very solid centres who are going to cause some havoc amongst backlines for the next 7 weeks.

Albury has been juggling numbers for the last few weeks and will be looking to bed down a consistent 15 before the split. With a wet ground the game could be closer than predicted

Csu at albury were good in patches, but couldn't sustain 80 minutes of pressure. The first twenty minutes was probably some of the best footy I this year. Albury stepped up when reddies lacked the consistently in intensity. Look for a closer game after the split though with csu lacking some numbers during uni holidays, although albury are a class act

Congratulations to Ed Garraway, Gus Howard and Harry Burey on their selection in the ACT Under 18's at Riverview starting this weekend.

It's a big wrap for these boys who travel from Wagga to Canberra regularly for training and warm up matches as well as their own club training and games.

Enjoy the time away at Riverview, it's full on week of footy but well worth it!! Well done boys!!

Edit: Just got mail that Wagga boy Steven Tracey will also get a gong with the Lloyd McDermott Development Team. Good work Steve! That's a fair wrap for SIRU with 4 local kids getting a run at the National Under 18's Championships!

Is old man Vaughan Welch still having a run for Albury? What about Nathan Smith, did they manage to drag him along as well?

namtrak

Johnnie Wallace (23)
Old man Welch is like watching grass grow - he moves like seaweed. But he does talk a big game. Nate Smith is full of fava beans and piss - every 5th week when we see him - his knee gives out.

ROUND 11 PREVIEW:

CSU (4) v City (3) @ Beres Ellwood +10 MATCH OF THE ROUND
This will be a good match up between these two teams. Wagga City will be sweating on the outcome of Joe Tora’s visit to the back specialist and he’s no certainty to play against his old club this week. CSU matched Albury for the first half of the match last week but were unable to last out the full 80mins as the Steamers applied pressure later in the game. City will be looking to Hamish Wrafter to step up against CSU’s evergreen 5/8 Paul Hood in what will be a tactical battle all game. This match is potentially a preview of finals footy for these two teams and will be a game that both sides want to get up in in an effort to stamp their authority on the top 4.

Tahs (5) v Albury (1) @ Conolly Rugby Park
This match always has plenty of feeling as these two clubs have a pretty colourful history together. Tahs will be smarting from their loss to Young last week while the Steamers will be bouyed by their victory over 4th placed CSU. Albury have been blessed with a comfortable draw playing a majority of games at Murrayfield but will travel up the Olympic Way with plenty of confidence coming into the split competition next week. Another 5/8 battle in this one with Xavier Chigwidden matching up against Richard Manion.

Temora (6) v Young (8) @ Temora Recreation Ground
Dizey’s Day is on at Temora this weekend and is a really great day of footy for a good cause over at the Temora Recreation Ground. This match is a bit of a local derby and will be one that Temora Captain/Coach Bill McCrone will not be taking lightly after Young got up over Waratahs last week. On the other side of the fence, Luke Eldridge will want his charges to continue on with the form that they showed against the 2011 Premiers. One matchup to keep an eye on in this match will be the barnstorming Campbell Maxwell marking SIRU centre Zach Davidson.

RARC (12) v Coota (7) = Forfeit by RARC

Griffith (9) v Tumut (10) @ Coro Club Oval
This is a big trip for the Bulls over to the MIA and is one that they are keen to match the Blacks for the full 80mins. Griffith were outclassed by Ag College last week and should be keen to compete this week. The Blacks will want hardnut John Tagliapetra to lead his boys from the front with the same job description handed out to Tumut lock/winger Will Reynolds.

Leeton (11) v Aggies (2) @ Murrumbidgee College Ovals
The Phantoms played well in patches against Wagga City last weekend, particularly in their forward pack. Livewire Danny Booth played in the backrow last week and watching him play against James Whiteley this week will be a fierce battle as they both have similar playing styles. Leeton will be happy with the home game, particulalry considering it will be cold in the Riverina/MIA this weekend.
