isn't the story that Smith didn't ask for it? There seems to be some confusion as to who made the request/decision.

isn't the story that Smith didn't ask for it? There seems to be some confusion as to who made the request/decision.

The laws suggest that there needs to be a request from the captain and the umpires then have to agree.

3.2 Extra Time

The umpires may decide to play 30 minutes (a minimum of eight overs) extra time at the end of any day (other than the last day) if requested by either captain if, in the umpires opinion, it would bring about a definite result on that day (this is in addition to the maximum one hour's extra time provided for in 3.1 (a) (iii) above). If the umpires do not believe a result can be achieved no extra time shall be allowed.

If it is decided to play such extra time on one or more of these days, the whole period shall be played out even though the possibility of finishing the match may have disappeared before the full period has expired.
Only the actual amount of playing time up to the maximum 30 minutes extra time by which play is extended on any day shall be deducted from the total number of hours of play remaining, and the match shall end earlier on the final day by the amount of time by which play was previously extended under this clause.

It is very odd. As the article mentions, Smith clearly approached the umpires and had a discussion. The umpires then conferred and play continued for the 8 overs.

One wonders what else he could have spoken to the umpires about at that time.

The pitch looks like a road. Need bowlers on the money and early wickets or it will be a long day. Great toss to win.

Kane Williamson brings up 4000 ODI runs in his 96th innings, equal 4th-fastest with Gordon Greenidge: only Hashim Amla (81), Viv Richards (88) & Virat Kholi (93) got there in fewer innings. Fastest Australian to 4000 was Dean Jones (102 inns).

NZ 341/7 (Tom Latham 137) so Bangladesh with plenty of work to do.

NZ win by 77 runs & Bangladesh will be sweating on the fitness of Mushfiqur Rahim who made 42 batting 6 & pretty much their last hope before doing his hammy taking a tightish single. Tried to stay out there but came off as he just couldn't run even a regulation single. Ridiculous number of runs scored behind square leg, both sides guilty of being too leg side & Williamson guilty of setting too many 5/4 & even 4/5 fields instead of going 6/3 & demanding Southee etc to bowl a 4th- or 5th-stump line. All in all not much improvement on the Chappell-Hadlee matches bowling-wise.

Hard to see a result in this test. Been very impressed by Azhar but I think our bowling has been pretty poor with the exception of Bird.

Pitch looks to be turning which should be a big concern for our batsmen. Would be a different game if we had a good spin option.

Pakistan declare 9/433 after a fantastic double ton to Azhar Ali.

Only two results possible here and Pakistan would consider themselves a big chance of bowling us out twice on this pitch.

So the first mission will be to take the follow on out of the equation, as that will greatly reduce Pakistan's chances of winning. If the current pair get through to stumps that will be a big box ticked.

Aussies back in this now. If we can get or get close to their 1st innings total and declare - a Pakistan batting collapse isn't out of the question.

Can't really get over quickly they resort to negative field placings. Warner and Khawaja batted well - but there were plenty of easy runs to pick off.

That was a great reply from the Aussies. Bat sensibly in the morning session and then put the hammer down in the afternoon session I reckon. I think it'll be a draw, but if we're 2/300 why not go for it?

Part of me is hoping Pakistan get up in this test.

At least it would mean a few changes going into the third test and hopefully some of the non-performers out before the tour of India.

As it stands we have a big reality check on the way in feb.

NZ 251 (Neil Broom 109* & in the process lifts his average from 17.75 to 23.20 in 24 ODI's spread over eight years) b Bangladesh 184 (after being 105/1) by 67 runs to lead the series 2-0. Third & final ODI on NYE then three T20's & two Tests.
