People are underestimating Beale. In a competition where we lack points of difference that can turn a game for us, Beale is one of them. In the very last game, Beale came on and made a difference with two great touches. After the game, some people bitterly disputed that he'd touched the ball at all. In the forthcoming game, people are saying that if all is lost, and there's a couple of minutes to go, then maybe (maybe) we can take the risk and bring him on. It's madness.

The other aspect of Beale which has been completely overlooked is his goal kicking. Forget his kicking stats with the Tahs this year as he was only used for the long range 50/50 kicks, and that was about his average for those. In last year's international season his average was just shy of 90%.

Cue the people saying he wore the wrong boots and slipped over once, but given our current goal kicking conundrum I'm not at all going to be surprised to see him brought off the bench in a close match or two during the RWC to have a few shots. And he may well save us from elimination.

If Giteau takes one step sideways tonight and denies space for his outside backs his plane ticket's torn up for mine. Ditto if SBW gets over/around/underneath him. Leali'ifano's 10kg heavier than Matt (but, surprisingly, only 1cm taller), a telling statistic considering what we're going to be up against on heavy NH pitches.

Shit, if only the same sort of cutthroat attitude were directed at all players.. 1 missed tackle, 1 dropped ball, 1 poor scrum and your tickets torn up..

Nah. I think tonight's game is the deal breaker for Giteau. His involvement up til now has been the entree. It's a huge ask to front up to SBW (if) in form, but if he doesn't cut the mustard in defense or crabs towards the sideline in attack, then he will have shown he is not up to RWC standard.

I'm as critical of Giteau as anybody but if he's crabbing sideways it will because we are getting slow ball and the defenders are on the front foot giving him to options to straighten.

My money is on Foley running at 45 degrees all night. Again because when he gets the ball it will be his only viable option.

Nonu at 12 would be a bigger challenge, because of his wider range of skills, particularly his tactical kicking. Just as hard to put down, but a lot cleverer in attack - the only real advantage Money Bill has is his extraordinary off-loading ability.

Yet if we held all Wallabies performances against the All Blacks as deal breakers then we wouldn't have a team to select..

So despite the dummy spit from every franchise but NSW I think Deano played a pretty solid game. Fardy was immense and Pooper didn't look half bad. Giteau had no problems with Silly Bill Dilliams but I think Nonu is a different beast. Feeling much more upbeat...

Well we got a lot of clarity around the make up of the squad tonight!

Front Row: Sio's addition at LH has made an extraordinary difference in all 3 tests to date. Suddenly our scrum is a strength rather than a weakness for the first time in decades when he is on the park. The combination with Moore and Kepu looks safe and the backup trio of Slipper, TPN and Holmes is locked in. Hanson will join the group as injury cover for the hookers so the only question remaining is who to take as injury cover for the props.

Sio, Moore, Kepu, Slipper, TPN, Holmes, Hanson +1 of Smith/Faulkner

Locks: With Simmons out, the lineout is abysmal. Our only capable lineout operator tonight was Fardy. Who partners Simmons remains a critical unanswered question in the make up of the side. When we pick McCalman at 8, Skelton is an option, when we pick 2 7s or Palu, he isn't. Mumm has made a strong impact outside the lineout and has presented a decent case. Horwill is becoming difficult to carry although may improve in partnership with Simmons. A lot of attention will be centered on Carter and Douglas in the lead up, as it appears likely one of them will be needed.

Simmons, Skelton, Mumm, +1 of Carter/Douglas/Horwill

Back Row: This was our strongest area tonight and has been in every game Hooper and Pocock have lined up together. Fardy has been excellent around the park and a strong contributor to the lineout. McCalman continues to perform well. The only remaining query is the injury backup. Palu is so far unsighted and Higgers dropped.

Fardy, Hooper, Pocock, McCalman, +1 of Palu/Higgers

Halfback: Before tonight Phipps looked top pick with White and Genia in support. But after one of the worst performances by a 9-10 combo in recent history, that's no longer the case. Even Giteau who hasn't played there in 6 years was a significant improvement and may have done enough to be considered as an emergency 3rd halfback if needed, negating the need to pick 3 specialists and providing a 6-2 bench option. White was just completely on another level to Phipps and added another dimension with his goal kicking. He's cemented that spot for now. Phipps and Genia may be fighting for a single reserve halfback spot if Giteau is deemed passable as emergency cover. It seems a step too far to drop Phipps completely for one bad game though, so while he is certainly on notice, he should get a chance at redemption off the bench next week.

White, Phipps, Genia

Fly Half/Inside Centre: Foley played himself out of contention for fly half tonight. Has just lost all confidence. He'll likely be retained in the squad as possible bench/injury cover. Cooper has been mixed so far. To'omua is a certain starter - the only question is whether that is at 10 or 12. Giteau is playing well enough to warrant inclusion somewhere. And Lilo is still to be tried, but we desperately need someone to combine well with To'omua so he is likely to come into consideration.

To'omua, Giteau, Cooper, Lilo, Foley

Outside Backs: Folau, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and Kuridrani have cemented their place. The other winger is still unknown, with Mitchell, Tomane, Speight and Horne all in contention. We also need someone to cover Folau should he get injured, which is where the versatility of Beale or Mitchell is necessary. Which one of those 5 players misses out is still to be determined.

Folau, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Kuridrani, +4 of Mitchell/Tomane/Speight/Horne/Beale.

That's the way I'm leaning at this stage. I've picked 32 - one of Phipps, Genia, Lilo or Foley will miss out, depending on whether 3 specialist halfbacks are deemed essential with Giteau in the squad.

Go nuts!

The 4 locks will be the ones that have played thus far. I think Douglas is zero chance and Carter massive outsider to make it. You couldn't drop any of the 3 on show tonight and Simmons is the first picked. Horwill was very good tonight and in the 1st Test - he hasn't shown his 2014-15 shit from the Reds yet.

99% sure Palu is going to feature next week. Higgers is goooone. McMahon is interesting.

Ok, One thing to say and Giteau said it, playing HB did his legs and thats why he was off early for KB (Kurtley Beale).. He cramped Badly which I think puts to bed the Gits at 9, his passes weren't flat and but he did look pick out a man and hit him.. I dont think he can play a whole game at 9 if he is a bench 9 and a second injury happens..

I thought Mumm didn't hit the rucks hard enough, was a poor lineout option and ran into contact far too high, plus the fact that he was puffing about 20-25 minutes into the first half and 15-20 minutes into the 2nd half.

Otherwise he was OK yes.

I think some people have been confusing Mumm for Horwill and Fardy (all in blue headgear) in the first half he was looking half dead.. second half he did better..

Yeah I made this point it was quite odd. I watched him pretty closely because I was interested in his performance. Early on he was walking and blowing hard, I made various comments about him being a passenger and not fit but in the 2nd half he got around well and through a mountain of work. Sprinting for charge downs even.

He might've gone out too hard or just not used to the pace. I think he's Fardy's backup though and could be very useful off the bench in a 6:2 split.

Do you think we will see a 6:2 split ? In a 5/3 Split, I feel who ever starts with Simmons\(Horwill or Mumm) and Big Willie and who ever else has to play 6/8 being probably big mac

I think Mumm might have got a hard time because, while he got through a mountain of work, none of it was flash or eye catching really (certainly not like his run against Argentina). To me it looked like he worked hard in defence and hit alot of rucks in attack in support of other ball carriers. Didn't do much carrying but hey, someone has to hit the rucks :D

Played most of the game too, scrum seemed solid, I'd take him over Skelton in a 23 if I was an aussie.

I think we've essentially found our best 23 after last night, with a few changes:
  1. Sio
  2. Moore (C)
  3. Kepu
  4. Simmons
  5. Horwill/Mumm
  6. Fardy
  7. Hooper
  8. Pocock
  9. Phipps - all round fairly solid in the TRC. Another crap game and we'll talk
  10. To'omua - has to start at 10. Been our best 10 in a few cameos playing there. At the moment I'd say hierarchy is To'omua - Cooper - Foley. Foley was poor last night and less than impressive against Argentina too.
  11. Still up for grabs. Mitchell wasn't great last night IMO but his boot was an asset. Speight has most upside but inexperienced. Tomane in the mix too.
  12. Giteau
  13. Kuridrani - bit quiet last night but one of the few Aussies capable of getting over the gain line consistently
  14. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)
  15. Folau
  16. TPN
  17. Slipper
  18. Holmes
  19. Mumm/Horwill/Skelton
  20. McCalman
  21. White
  22. Cooper/Foley
  23. Beale/not selected winger

Wallabies seem to have some decent depth finally..

I did post a while back about the average age and experience of the squads who have won the RWC, and for a long time(especially in 2011) Australia had one of the youngest squads. I think with the current squad and some old heads like Holmes/Giteau/Mitchell coming back in Australia has the right mix of experience and youth.

I don't see why Phipps should start again next week. I agree he has been good up until last night but he just had an absolute shocker. Not just a bad game, a memorably terrible one. And then the guy that came on for him won the game. There has to be a point where 1 guy plays himself out of a jersey and another plays himself into it. And I think that point was well and truly passed. And I'm a Waratahs fan that doesn't like Nic White!

Phipps should have a chance to redeem himself but it should be from the bench.
