Looks to be some preconceived views about Powell coming out of the woodwork. One thing he does better than Phipps is sniping. Otherwise, there's not a lot of difference in the way they both play the game. Probably not coincidental that the Wallabies' attack was much more threatening after Powell came on than it was for the whole of the time Phipps was there.

I too would like to see Gordon get a chance, but imo it should be at the expense of Phipps, not Powell.

Mate seriously there would be Shute Shield clubs where Powell doesn’t get the start. Warringah and Uni for sure, Randwick as well if Short is available. Massive myth. At Uni he likely plays 4thgrade if Strang, Gordon and Phipps all available.

I think it was as much that Ireland got tired as anything. We started getting some front foot ball for once. Some of our "finishers" in the forwards were making metres we hadn't gained all game really. Unfortunately we didn't use it better. Powell can snipe well, but I thought he was going to get murdered one time he did when he ran smack into 2 massive Irish forwards. To his credit, he didn't! Powell was OK in his 19 minute cameo.

Well in the time he was there, he was late to at least two rucks one resulted in a turnover, threw a forward pass and a low one to Foley leading to a knock on. Gordon is better but so is Phipps

My memory of Phipps from this game will be the decision to throw a loop pass over three peoples right on our own goal line. Nearly cost us a try. But halfback wasn't other biggest problem tonight. It was our lazy forwards. There was a moment in the 2nd half we lost the ball to a counter ruck with only backs there to protect the ball, the Irish had forwards driving in. Lazy.

As much as I love Cheika and the style he wants to play i'll be glad to see the end of him after the WC. His game plan is to rigid and clearly isn't working. Too often are we trying to run the ball out of our own half when a kick is needed. We put far to much pressure on ourselves.

Rubbish, so we should only measure kick % on the kicks you specify? You know all the other ones matter because they make up the score?

So you’ve been happy with his ability to convert goals that have been consequential in the last 18 months? For either NSW or AUS? If you think he has measured up there you are either Family , an old boy or easily pleased.

Phipps threw more bad passes than good. Blame that low knock on Foley, his position was too wide from the ruck, hiding like most of the game.

Regarding all the comments about the ref and TMO I agree fully
There would be uproar in ireland if that last call went against us , there was a feeling we were rode all game .
I'm sure it's the same feeling here that the wallabies were rode
Every single tight game comes down to the ref now bar none
The guy who said he'd prefer to be watching his local club in starting to feel the same way

Phipps had a great game. I was critical of him last, and so made a point of watching him closely. He was very good.

Or rational. Yes, because he has kicked at over 80%. It's as simple as that. Any other argument is a nonsense.

I marked them all, as I knew someone would use this canard. Plus I had to sit at home. And not drink, because I am on call. And recorded it so I could check. Want to guess how many were above shoulders or below waist level? Go on, have a crack.

At the ground I thought Phipps was one of our best two players with Pocock.

Yeah, his passing was decent, speed to the ruck was good, forced a penalty. For all the "we are shit without Genia" that was going on in the buildup his absence was not what cost us the game.

He had a good game by Phipps standards but that's not saying much. Nearly cost us a try. Most of passes were slow and not hitting the mark.

We deserved to lose in the end. We had momentum and field position and kept spilling it or throwing it out.

Ref was too involved and it was horrid. No one gives a fuck about the god damn ref. We want to see rugby. Rugby shouldnt reward teams oriented towards milking random bullshit breakdown penalties.

In the end, this is a form of the game unpalatable to the Aussie public. It won't change because it suits those with the cash and control of the game.

No, they weren't. He threw a howler that you mentioned - 27th minute - trying to throw too long a ball which went high. He popped a short, quick ball to Pocock (above waist level) which Pocock spilled when we were under penalty advantage. 11th minute. Tough one, catchable, but I'll give you that as a bad one. He threw one in the second half which was dropped, but was in the right zone. Not really his issue. That was it. He tackled well, he got a turnover.
Interesting, Kafer opined when Powell threw a long one to Foley that was at his shins, it was Foley's fault.
These guys have to pass it with little chance to second guess. I think they do just fine.
As overall players, both are a step down from Genia. He's thrown a couple of poor ones this series too. They all do.
