My understanding was the rules say that attackers can’t make contact prior to contact with the defence. I get that it’s pretty impossible in a lineout, but I assume they shouldn’t be able to advance.

Having said that Horton should have used arms in the tackle.

Normally the ball is transferred back to the hooker very quickly.
Clever of the Brumbies to not shift it until contact from the opposition.

They are really good at sticking to detail therethey don't pass it back ever lock holds on and starts moving forward facing backwards

What they were doing is very close to a flying wedge or cavalry charge by definition, which are illegal.
Not shifting the ball back simply removes the obstruction law.

The rolling maul is a blight on the game. I know we have been through this before, up hill and down dale, but for the life of me I still cannot work out why the ball carrier cannot be tackled, by hook or by crook.

Awesome work Waratahs. Definitely the better team. Which means, like the Reds, you have to take your hat off to a Brumbies team winning when they are ugly.

White was great as usual, but I'll give that contest to Gordon. Harrison over Lolesio and Perese better than his opposite. Waratah pigs stepped up a gear but generally the Brumbies were better.

Great game. Commiserations Waratahs.

A pretty forgettable game for Tom Cusack.......... two yellow cards that became red, and the opportunity for the Tahs to score their final try, and also turned the ball over at the back of the scrum not long prior to that which almost led to a Tahs try.

I also felt the Brumbies kicked way too much on turnover ball......... Banks, Muirhead and Wright were all having good games and they should’ve counter attacked and targeted Newsome’s wing more.

Their discipline was sloppy in their line defence......... Valetini had an off quiet night, and the Tahs defence really rushed up on Lolesio to shut him down - that’s where we needed Simone to step up.

Neville though.......... what a player he’s become - favorite moment was him sprinting back when the Tahs made the break to get the intercept.

But a few key personnel changes for the Tahs making a huge difference..........

Gordon back is a big boost, Foketi and Perese were dynamite swapped around in the centres, and Harris is a better player than either Swinton and Dempsey - a possible bolter for the Wobs...............

Newsome though......... did he play again this week?

I liked the Tahs maul tactics. It wasn’t perfect but I think they are getting onto something to negate the maul.

The ball carrier cannot transfer the ball until contact is made so I guess you just need to get your biggest guy and line him up and absolutely blitz him. A player like Tupou or Fa’amasuili slamming into you will make teams think twice before setting one up.

I agree the Maul is a blight. It can’t stop then restart, constantly has the attacking team having players join illegally and is essentially obstruction

I feel like Alex Newsome is the only player in the Waratahs who didn't improve in last night's game from previous weeks. And maybe David Porecki. Everyone else played better.

Gordon's leadership makes a big difference.

I think the simple answer to the maul is to take out the "That's once". After 5 seconds without going forward, use it or lose it.

Really enjoyed that, despite the result. All I've really been looking for is improvement, and we finally saw it. My points re the Tahs.
Negative
*lack of composure when in the scoring zone, way too many chances missed
*Very poor defensively on the edges, particularly Newsome and Maddocks. That's two very ordinary games in a row for Newsome, his position must be under discussion
Positive
*Gordon was outstanding, both playing and leading. If he continues that form, there is a third player in consideration for Wallaby 9 alongside White and McDermott
*The centre pairing were really strong, and imo outplayed the more fancied Brumbies pair, Perese is class
*The forwards IMO achieved parity with the Brumbies pack. They conceded two scrum penalties I think, but also won two. In the lineout I think each side lost one on their own throw
*Harris is growing into a Super standard backrower. It is a fair jump from 20's to Super, he didn't make it as quickly as Wilson, but is getting there now

*Neville continues to be the form lock in the competition, I would really like to see him in gold this year
*Tom Wright should be the first player picked for the Wallabies this year, sheer class. He and Korobeite are an absolute no-brainer for the wings
* The Brumbies back three were all very good last night. Banks giving himself a real chance of grabbing the Wallabies 15 jesrsy
* In a game where he was really needed, Valletini was missing last night. For mine, I would rather see Uru, ASY (Angus Scott-Young) FLW (Fergus Lee-Warner) or Kemeny in the 6 jumper.

Great comments Froggy. Agree with all of them. I’ll add Lonergan looked good off the bench too. If it wasn’t for FF (Folau Fainga'a) doing his mugging for the camera after his regular maul tries I often wouldn’t realise he’s on the field. Reckon he could get leapfrogged soon.

So Valentini has one bad game this season and call the rest above him.. His been one of the best all season.. one game doesn't make a season..

From what I saw, FF (Folau Fainga'a) should be on some sort of notice for that cannonball into the Tahs maul. Dopey stuff. Mystifying that it was deemed not to be YC threshold. Looked to me to be the example to be used in the refs handbook.

Both need to add some physical presence in the off season. But yeah. Should have been playing much earlier.
