Yes the BGS 1stXV are a good side this year but it wouldn't be accurate to say that their rugby program as a whole is "turning a page". If I heard correctly they failed to win a single game against GT except for the 1stXV. Also they currently don't have a 16A side which means they could be seriously lacking some depth next year across the opens age group. But good luck for the rest of this year they are a quality side.
sounds like Churchie. I think they amassed 2 wins on Saturday.

i'd be very surprised if nudgee don't start archie condon this week, that kid has got talent!
Nudgee coach put Archie Condon on for the last 2 minutes v Churchie too little too late. With the injury to Toia who unfortunately might be gone for season at least the coach can now make changes and shuffle the backline and save face for his previous poor selection decisions. No fault to the lads but issues in the first xv are more than just mid field. Nudgee defence was not to their standard but that happens when you play kids with injuries. Pointless having depth if you don’t use it. Two weeks in a row Nudgee were out coached. With no Toia, Nudgee will have to learn a whole new game plan, if coach knows one.

Completely agree Nudgees coach Andrew Scotney has been out coached the past two weeks and his team selections have been questionable. Will be interesting to see if he makes any changes this week.

I did attend the 13a game on Main Oval on the weekend where Nudgee won 20-7- it was the only other game I saw besides the BIG ONE.

The difference in the two teams were obvious.

Nudgee were a team of Big boys for their age and the call " Give it to the big kid" had devastating effect as the Big Kids were immediately supplied with the ball, where they tucked it under their arm , and turned the shorter lighter , Churchie kids into Bowling pins. The Churchie Kids were tenacious, throwing themselves with copy book tackles at the ankles of the "Big Kids" or being carried on the Big Kids backs with 4 other teams mates as they grappled with the "Giants" to bring them down. What they lacked in size they made up in heart but were no match for the physical size and strength of 13 Years old who had , been blessed with their growth spurt early.

What I was more interested in was the rugby skill at that level, rather than the result. The ACGS forwards techniques were sound but out muscled and the backline sang like a bird, moving the ball swiftly to either blue and grey wings without incident, or showing rugby intelligence beyond their years as they spiralled torpedoes into open spaces and cutting swaths of realestate out of the Nudgee territory turning around the "big kids" only to face the Bowling Pin outcome again. Their Rugby skills were silky smooth for that age group and the coaching staff had obviously started to drill technique and skill into this team, knowing the growth spurts will all come in time. They are in no rush to win. A real rugby program.

I have seen this before. Little but talented 13a team getting towelled at that level ,grow up to be formidable FIRST XV's with combination and chemistry that can't be bought in with a cheque book. Add a couple of cheque book players who bring in external skills that can be dissolved into the rest of this nucleus later on and you have the secret to a good Rugby Program that will go on to produce multiple representative players. That is what Australian Rugby needs.

My takeaway -
1. Is a successful rugby program one who has the ability to put kids in the Gym and out Muscle other sides and win every game every week ? , or
2.one that imparts true Rugby skills on its students, taught technique and rugby smarts as they build a warehouse full of Talented young kids who grow up to be good Rugby Players with the ability to play "Champagne rugby" and maybe one day play in the Wallabies?

I think the later , is what Australian Rugby needs. Less Muscle powder and bench pressing and more athletic Barbarian style silky hands rugby and unstoppable mauls from Fitter Lighter packs that just know how to scrummage better than the Muscle.

Australian School programs need an overhaul. We need more Ella's , Lynaghs, more "Horans and Littles", More Campese and Goulds, even Quads or Pongas -more Barbarian flair..... more X Factor players who have rugby skills bred into them from a young age...... and who cares if they lose every match, so long as this skills transfer continues to grow the game and build a professional game we can be proud of......and the kids have a smile on their faces whilst this is done.

Now thats a Rugby Program.

^ The biggest issue with "give it to the big kid" approach is that those kids tend not to develop other rugby skills and their teams tend not to develop other game plans. When the tenacious little kids who have had to develop rugby skill to survive start catching up in strength and conditioning it all starts to fall apart for the those who favour the "big kid" approach.

Would be nice to think you could develop the rugby skills of the early developers, but it's just so easy for coaches to use the asset they already have. That won't change unless you have players not being selected for teams unless they have the skill to play at that level, not just the size. IMO it's one for the coaches/selectors. All kids should be given "work ons" by their coaches, you can't coach size!

Scotney , Graham and co are crafty campaigners and have been incredible servants for the Nudgee program. They have performed Miracle escapes over the years for that school. They should be held in high regard and a debt to them by the school should be acknowledged for building their program.

The Nudgee Supporter network will be shattered after the weekend loss and so emotions will be high as they search for answers. what happened? It must be the coaches!

I disagree - The School Ego view that Nudgee were somehow " entitled " to win, was the downfall. They saw themselves as invincible and the Premiership was theirs, and they just weren't. They did not respect the competition and They got Taught a Big Rugby Lesson!

By all means , vent on the coaches this week, or the ref the week before to explain it, but it's the believing your own fantasy that is the answer.

Your team is simply not as good as they thought they were and the surprise loss is hurting more than the most. You will bounce back next year better for the experience and your coaches will be a big asset in explaining what happened this year to next years team so they learn.

Nudgee are not out of this years premiership either and so all schools should remember that, but the school body will be hurting. The Vikings dished out a lesson, Nudgee will not forget in a hurry.

Not a true at all, the Nudgee U13 are far from a "big team" the majority of the Nudgee u13 play rugby on Sundays for Norths and Brothers. The Norths team don't even field a team in the division 1 competition and Brothers have forfeited the past 2 weeks. The best rugby competition in Qld at this age is the BJRU Division 1 competition. If you want to see "big" u13 teams have a look at the Logan/Sunnybank/Ipswich division 1 team. All three teams have massive units and when i say massive we are talking 13 year old boys who are over 90KG and close to 190cm. The games are actually some really high quality rugby when they play each other. I would comfortably say these three teams would beat any u13 team in Qld. Nudgee need to wait til they play the u13 State High team...

what a game that was on Saturday, Churchie vs Nudgee, the game was electric, but there were some downfalls in performances (not gonna say who I think we all know who it is). even the second game was amazeballs. A start player that stood out was Archie Condon, a cracking playerrrrr. I highly recommend that he moves up to 1st. I've also heard of a Fergus Wilson ball out. Keep an eye on him.

Hey Alg, thanks for your comment, as an independent man myself, I personally agree with your statement. That kid has talent. His passes are straight to the chest, he never misses a tackle, and he's got amazing footwork. I would love too see that kid ball out in the 1st, he's will bring a lot to the table.

Hi, Rugbyfan thank you for the reply. I will still have to do some investigation into this matter as I will be making the journey down to Nudgee for round 5. May have to get up a little bit earlier to catch the young guns playing at lunchtime and during the dewy morning :)

NC will be able to take some solace from.the fact that I think they won every other game out there today... Anyone know if Churchie won any other game other than the big one (the one that counts!)

No, Churchie lost 28 out of 29 games and the one they won was in the last couple of minutes against a weakened side...I think Nudgee are now something like 75 wins and 1 loss for the season.

Just a reminder, this forum is read by students (obviously), parents, coaches, teachers as well as by rugby bodies etc.

There is a standard rule - don't talk disrespectfully of schoolboys. I take a low tolerance to it. Don't talk down about whole teams, individual players, specific positions etc. Or you will go.

These are school kids for crying out loud. Online anonymous bullying is pathetic. Lift your game.
