Sydney Subbies 2025

One of the dirtiest games i've ever seen blacktown v beecroft. Blacktown had 2 reds and 3 yellows all for foul play. Punches, eye gouges, elbows, swearing at the ref, bumping the ref, late hits, refusing to leave the feild after getting sent off. The blacktown coach had to be removed from the ground. The ref threatened to call the game on multiple occasions but ultimately allowed it to play out. The club has already had multiple reds this season. I expect there will be punishments handed down as a result from this game and a long meeting with subbies.
Have just finished watching this game. Some really disturbing actions from the Blacktown players and crowd. I think it may be due to the unfortunate rise of that horrible run it straight game that is becoming popular, and some of the league influence in the area. Had to feel bad for Blacktown captain at times, no matter how many times he had to go back and tell his guys to be better disciplined, he couldn’t keep them in line. I hope subbies does enough to keep those players out of the game, but a lot of the onus should be on Blacktown as a club to better select and control their players/coaches

If the reports about the coach's behaviour is correct, how can we expect better from the players?

What was interesting and laughable is a Blacktown player threw a punch which hit his own team mate (was definitely aimed at the Beecroft player). Ref speaks to player and, i assume cautions him and then the game resumes.

If someone throws a punch does it matter if it connects. If you punch your own team mate (intentional or not) can you be sent off

I'm not having a go at the ref who was thrown a hospital pass having to ref this game and I have nothing but sympathy for him. I'm just curious what the rules are, i have never seen this.

Training will be interesting....

I don’t blame him as He had to get safely back to his car after the game. I thought this type of pure thuggery was a thing of 20 years ago. I suspect subbies have no choice here.

Law 9.12 (Dangerous play): A player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes, but is not limited to, biting, punching, contact with the eye or eye area, striking with any part of the arm, shoulder, head or knee(s), stamping, trampling, tripping or kicking. Sanction: Penalty

Note: "physically or verbally abuse anyone"

Subbies judiciary recommendation breaks this down further - "Punching or striking with hand, elbow, shoulder or arm (including stiff-arm tackle)": 2 weeks on the low end to a maximum 52 weeks.

I think if referred to the judiciary, it’s likely to be punished. No one throws a punch intending to hit their own player, and having seen the video it’s clear he was intending to throw a punch at the becroft player who’d successfully rucked him

I’m hearing Briars have a lot of their players back this week. Will still be very hard to beat uni at home on ladies day, but will be a close one I think.

Uni going well but maybe a wake up call is on the cards.
Briars all over uni from the tape, they are on the improve. Briars have some games in hand, they could get back into contention.

Petersham with a nice win over Irish, looks like top spot in Div two will come down to double points at David Phillips in a few weeks.

What did UNSW do to hurt you?
I partially agree with the sentiment that we were, at least in parts, better than them in some of the games - finishing and points scoring were our issues, as well as stamina.

We had a lot of players covering multiple grades due to various unavailabilities - on a better day, we might have claimed a couple of grades.

A clean sweep but certainly not a complete domination.

The doubters seem to have their fun every year. Colleagues were once again written off early in the season—some even suggesting demotion, and only tipping them to make the top four in 5th Grade.

Now, Colleagues sit 4th on the Club Championship ladder and are hitting their stride. The critics always seem to come out of the woodwork, and every year they’re proven wrong.

Next week, they face a big test against the Men from Mosman. Let’s see how they measure up.

Curious as to what happens to teams that have more than two washed out games. How do they determine who gets to play in the wet weather round?

I think it’s more of a case that just nobody really cares about Colleagues

I had a feeling this would happen. That Beecroft pack is physical, though it looks like they rested some of their better players. From what I've seen of Blacktown, they don't mind leaking tries if they win the contest up front and put a few shots on. That Beecroft team is hard-nosed and didn't take a backwards step, so this is the result.

Can't blame the players if the messaging is coming from the head coach, you're the adult in the room who's not currently in the fire of battle, you need to know better and do better. Not a great look for Subbies if Blacktown asked to come up to Div 3 so that they could field 2 grades, at the expense of Old Barker, then turn around and behave like pork chops.

That Blacktown performance was one of the worst I’ve seen in awhile. Just dog shot after dog shot, and barely interested in playing rugby vs trying to put a shot on and talk shit. At one stage you hear a Blacktown player on the mic say, “I dont even play this shit, I play league.“

A few years ago when I played against Blacktown they were a solid club. Had some electrifying backs and some old heads who kept the team grounded.

Hopefully this game was an aberration due to a short term influx of league goons

I think it goes in order of occurrence so the first washed out game that couldn't be played for double points is automatically assigned to the next Wet Weather slot.

If you can reschedule within 15 days of the washout then you can do that as a preference.

There were 4 games scheduled to be replayed this week - all for Thursday night:

Radford Cup - Mac Uni v Brothers - Mac Uni @ 6:45PM
Womens 10s - Mac Uni v Brothers - Mac Uni @ 8:00PM
Robertson Cup - Forest v Burraneer - Melwood @ 7PM
Joy Johnson Blue - Merrylands v Hornsby - Holrody @ 8PM

Divsion 3, Round 7 Predictions:

Beecroft @ Blacktown:
Beecroft by 40. I'll take Blacktown in 2s in a close one and Old Barker handily in Colts.

Knox @ LCOI: Give me Knox by 7 in a close, fiery one. I'll take Knox by 10 or so in 2s and Knox by 30 odd in Colts.

Hills @ Hornsby: Hills by 12. I'll take Hills in 2s also. Colleagues 2s Colts should make it 0-3 for Hornsby at home this week. Feel free to prove me wrong boys!
Results - 8/9

Beecroft by 53. Enough said on the above. Knox and Hills will be the only teams to play Beecroft close this year, but they don't appear to have any kinks in their amour at this stage. Blacktown 2s with a good win, they'll be competitive in that grade. Barker colts edged an improving Beecroft.

Knox by 19. I did feel like Knox left a lot in the tank when these two sides played in round 1. A raucous ladies day crowd wasn't enough to get LCOI over the line at home in a game which wasn't too competitive after they fired the first shot from a charged down kick. Their 2s looked VERY impressive though, could compete in that cup. Knox colts 'only' won by 13, but that's as competitive as they've had it this year, LCOI will be encouraged by that and they will give it a red hot crack in round 3. Good to see LCOI get a thirds out there too, great signs.

Hills by 35. Statement win by the Hills boys off the back of a couple of tough losses. They're a much better side with the line threatening of Bugg at 15, he's their best for mine. Hills 2s by a lot also, and Colleagues IIs dismantled Hornsbys colts. Tough day at home for Hornsby, 39-147 across the 3 sides makes for grim reading in their first season up in Div 3.

Beecroft in 1s, Hills in 2s and Knox in Colts are heavy favourites 7 rounds into the season.

From a club champs perspective:
1. Hills 844 (6 rounds played)
2. Beecroft 768 (6 rounds played)
3. Knox 606 (4 rounds played)

Should be very interesting as Knox has rounds against Hornsby and Blacktown missed, two of the weaker Div 3 outfits.
