The more common term of a grass cut is when your mate is tuning someone all night trying to get in with her then you do it effortlessly, grass cutting your mate

Hopefully in a positive way. Many refs (& coaches) do not differentiate the IRB Laws versus the Amendments to Laws within specific Comp Rules. SJRU has been guilty of having a page of amendments which confuses the crap out of players, refs and coaches involved in both school and club rugby.

I will also go further and say the Club Competition in Sydney also flaunt the IRB's intentions for Junior rugby pathways with many of its Comp Rules!
I guess so: there was yellow given in one (Sydney Jnrs I think) game and the bloke who later did QLD Red v ACT game said something to the effect of the pressure being off - and then he binned the ACT 12...somewhat dubiously I thought until I saw your comment re game management, since the kid clearly entered from the side: but it was between the half way and 10m.

Aren't you teacher's pet then?:)

So will Burkett be sidelined or available for the feature match on Thurday?
Still a little unclear.

Seperately: If it is an illegal (and dangerous) technique , then one would hope that Junior Gold are not teaching "grass cutters" as someone has previously suggested.

I am on record here on other threads about TPN kamikaze playing style not being in his long term medical interests.
They started patting my dog and I told her to be careful as they were refs - laugh, we've never laughed so much

Russell F.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. George's earlier match report seemed a lot fairer than this. Perhaps the Sydney boys took the Brumbies boys too lightly after they beat them resoundingly 2 weeks ago. That and a tetch of ill-discipline.

Did the earth move for you?

12 minutes on in the Schools vs WA game, about 15 metres out from the NSW line, two front rowers collided in a tackle, more reminiscent a couple of bison bulls in a territorial discussion in mating season, that was felt back in WA. Two of the biggest boppers on show (#1 NSW vs #3 WA) collided at full pelt (if there is such a descriptor for props) in a real bonecrusher. The Geological service has reported it was magnitude 3 on the Richter scale.

Both Bison were uninjured, but it looked brutal. Loved it.

Anyway were all digressing with technicalities. How were the games today, who stood out? Where were the games won/lost?

Out of interest, is there different directions/guidance issued to referees state by state, association by association?

I would have thought that advice for automatic YC in Vic would also be the same as advice issued to all NSW refs, - Country, Subbies, Schools, Juniors, Womens, Shute Shield and Colts regardless.
This was a decision the referees made in Vic at about round 4 of this years senior comp and we had seen an increase in them and we reviewed some footage and decided they were dangerous. Not sure what the info to other states has been though.

Whilst it is reasonably safe for the tacklee (but not the tackler) there is technically no arms in this type of tackle and thus it is deemed dangerous due to rules that are there to prevent shoulder charges.

That being said, I've never seen anyone carded for this in rugby even in Victoria.
This year I have 4 in the bin for it.

"The referee was a fiend of the yellow card and thought the game was all about himself rather than the boys."
1 tip tackle
1 tackle in the air
1 grass cutter (no arms tackle)
1 repeat infringements YC

They all seem pretty self explanatory to me.

Game 8. NSW Country vs Queensland White
NSW Country ran out behind #3 Sedgeman keen to atone for yesterday’s disappointing performance against Schools. Their opponent lead by #6 Skelton also had a point to prove following their narrow 2 point victory the previous day.

First half: Before the spectators had realised the game had been started, #13 Perese opened QLD’s account after less than a minute. #14 Marsden added the extras for a 7 – 0 lead. Satisfied with their early lead, the big White car seemed to have been placed in cruise control.
Country took control of the ball for extended periods of the opening stanza, but like yesterday they lacked the knockout punch needed to break the tenacious QLD defence line. Time and time again promising Country attacks were snuffed out by the QLD back division drifting defence which was well coordinated by #22 Vandenburg. Ferocious tackling frequently isolated the Country runners who were unable to get the ball to their wings fast enough to break the defence.

Feeding off scraps of possession in good field positions, the White machine awoke in the 17th minute with #13 Perese bagging his second try for the day. It was a well-executed, but very simple backline manoeuvre following an attacking lineout set up from a poor Country kicking option. #14 Marsden added the extra points, 14-0.
The resultant kick off saw Country #3 Sedgeman placed in Bad Boys corner following a Yellow Card for dangerous play. Surprisingly, Country resorted to uncontested scrums while Sedgeman was off the field. To Country’s credit, the scoreline didn’t change before oranges while their Captain was in the bin (14-0).

Second half.
The second half was more of the same from both teams. The smaller Country team dominating possession and position but again they could not seem to defeat the ferocious Qld defence. Poor QLD ruck and maul discipline helped keep Country in the game with a lopsided penalty count (about 16 to 5 against).

14 minutes into the second stanza, against the run of play, #14 Marsden plucked a poorly timed Country pass out of the air and scooted 30 metres to add five to the score. He converted his own try to make the score 21-0.
9 minutes later, the Whites #11 Kemp received the ball in a pretty ordinary position about 22 metres out, but he danced over the try line with 3 consecutive inside sidesteps which left would be tacklers grasping at thin air. #10 Russell converted. 28-0.
With time almost up, after some sustained attack and multiple probes at the their line, the resolute Whites defence was finally broken with a 4 metre props sprint as #3 Sedgeman scored under the black dot. #10 Styles converted. 28-7. There was no change to the scoreline before the referee called time.

Queensland White: Defended like Trojans. Scored with ease when they were bored with defending. Did just enough to cruise through. Best- 22, 13, 14, 6, 8.
NSW Country: Had enough pill to win 4 games but lacked the ability to land a knockout blow. Never gave up trying to score but made far too many mistakes from relentless QLD pressure. Best – 9, 2, 5, 8.

Score:
Queensland White: 28 (Perese 2, Marsden, Kemp tries; Marsden 3, Russell Conversions)
NSW Country: 7 (Sedgeman try, Styles Conversion)
½ time Qld 14-0.

Anyone watch the Qld red v Victoria match?

There will be a full report of the day after Uncle Lee takes the dogs for a stroll round the park, and whets the whistle with a wee dramme.

The Vics were ahead for much of the game based on PA announcements on No 1 Oval.
There was an almighty roar (of relief as it turns out) very close to when Full time was expected.

Unfortunately for the Mexicans, the cheer was from the QLD White spectators cheering on their contemporaries as they must have taken the lead very late in the match.

Having seen both teams yesterday, it was evident that Victoria had plenty of size and pace and had a willingness to get in their opponents face. They must have forgetten to read G&GR preview which installed Reds as Pool B Favourites.

New day today National Yellow Card day from the sounds of it.

Got me going on my Monty Python Quote of the day about the Yellow Cards, naughty boys and their mothers. This time from the Life of Brian. The followers have tracked Brian back to his house and are in "discussion" with Brian's mother, Mandy:

MANDY: Now, you listen here! He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy! Now, go away!

FOLLOWERS: Who are you?!

MANDY: I'm his mother. That's who.

FOLLOWERS: Behold His mother! Behold His mother! Hail to thee, mother of Brian! Blessed art thou, Hosanna! All praise to thee, now and always!
