This is my main challenge, too - need somewhere for the old blokes to have a trot, and Halligan ain't it.

I'm already thinking about strategies for recruitment next year. Certainly I've made some mistakes in the name of trial and error.

After finding out $220 isn't the cheapest rego in the comp, I was a bit miffed.

For next year, I'm definitely going lower as a starting point; $150 max.

We tried cheap rego a few years back ($100) but unfortunately we just found that the players who already paid when they were a lot higher, were still the only ones to pay the reduced fee. We're at $250 this year, and we've probably had our most successful year of fees to date. We've managed to wrangle about 50% of our 2017 fees so far and we're on track to get the rest.

We definitely have enough blokes that want a second team that we could possibly lift to 5th division for 2018. We've still got new guys showing up at training and registering, so if we maintain that, we're looking good for numbers next year.

At the same time I'm implementing no pay = no play policy.

I tried that this year and it failed. With $150 there are no excuses. Don't care who they are or how good they are. That's 2018.

Sounds great Pfitzy! We attempted that this year also, but it hasn't worked out too well. We're still getting dribs and drabs of fees. Hoping for the full fee upfront seems a bit too optimistic!

the subbies rugby forum needs to switch to a regional structure or i fear the end for rugby.

in india they had far travel for many games and indian players would not play due to family, work and partying. the india rugby forum changed thewhole structure and now teams play teams in there region which increase numbers and interest. india would not be the improving force today without this change. areas like west bengal, maharashtra and odisha are now rugby havens due to this change.

Sandeep how does this sound for a comp. initially there would be a gap between clubs but over time it would equalise.

Forest

Hey Sandeep, a regional structure would be fantastic. The biggest hurdle however would be the disparity between Clubs. For example, two clubs likely to face off would be Hills (4 Grades + Colts + Halligan's) and Rouse Hill (1.5 to 2 grades at the moment). Where would the extra teams go, either back into a non-regional comp or lost to rugby.

Even in the Rugby Centric North Shore you have Lindfield (4 Grades + Colts) with Roseville (1 Grade) in the next Suburb) And the one assumption you can never make in Subbies Rugby is that people will just change Clubs. They won't because it's not why they play subbies.

I think their should be a move to regional competitions, however it would require serious analysis and be well managed. I'm just not sure how it could be done without causing a lot of distress to Clubs and creating huge divisions in the rugby community.

Not Happy Jan - No bus trips in the central comp.
Also, Ryde Park and Boronia Park are walking distance, but Hunters and Iggies in different groups?

Heavyd,

They look like some pretty solid competitions, what about everyone currently below Div 3. Are they just expected to suck it up and keep on travelling. Especially given they're the clubs, generally, that have the biggest issues with travel and consistent numbers.

Don't get me wrong, I think it would be a good first step but it immediately creates that "huge division" I discussed earlier.

Just throwing it out there as a first cut and smaller clubs would need to be considered.

The reason SJRU numbers are in free fall is that parents don't want to drive from Oately to Newport or Dural to Mosman for a 1pm Sunday game for little Jimmys under 11 team. If the game is to consolidate and rebuild we have to try something new.

Well it looks like that Forest rumour about new players was fake news - same players as a few weeks ago, with Ryan Butcher still apparently injured / not playing which always affects them.

Bad away loss to HAC. I hear they dominated in the forwards but their backs couldn't tackle, which seems to be their year so far.

I see former Barraclough Medal winner Hugh Lamrock is back running around in Newport's 2nd grade side.

Pfitzy, was it you who was talking about getting contactless eftpos at games a while back? Would you have any success doing a lap of the change rooms before/after games grabbing $10-15 each from the guys who haven't paid?

Pfitzy you will look back at this time one day and smile. You are in a place where you can change everything. Similar to Beecroft in 2013. You will defeat this

Took a meander up to Beecroft last week and saw they had some Apple i-thingy (technical term for older blokes) for tapping cards. The payment then got confirmed on the guys phone. Looked like a cheap and easy solution to the ever encroaching cashless society. Can anybody else confirm they use this. Could probably help a lot of clubs out.

Oh yeah, some pretty good footy was played too:D A little surprised by the result in 1st Grade. The rest looked pretty evenly matched and could have gone either way, Colts not withstanding

We use a Commbank eftpos machine. Only $29/month. We used to pay $60/month back in the day for the old 2G eftpos machines. They are worth every penny.

Note: there were three forfeits across Div 4 this week in what is a worrying sign.

Our firsts to Briars
Mac Uni thirds (its exam time)
Irish thirds (Lions Tour)

Is it really that concerning? You guys are at the beginning of rebuilding and would have benefited from Div. 5.

Irish and Mac Uni cater to specific populations, both of whom have events that are far more pressing than the weekend's Div. 4 subbies fixture. Similar situation to the classic 'stalwart team mate has finally decided to settle down, naturally has his bucks and wedding during the season, and invites half of first grade' scenario.
