Zach will be apart of the gps 16s team.

from my knowledge only one player has skipped the 16s team to play in gps 1 and that’s Joseph Sua'ali'i. anyone have any thoughts on gps 16s team or a predicted lineup ?
Interesting question, I don't know the names so well but have watch ed the teams over the years. I would say Scots will dominate 16's given the large number of candidates already playing 1's and 2's (Fittler, Jacques, Brial and others), the balance of their 16A's is very strong even without them. Newington will also fill a number of places given the strength of their 16's team. Joeys, Riverview and Kings will fight out the balance. The wildcard could be Grammar, I don't know how their age group A team has progressed but in 13's and 14's they were impressive and could have held their own playing against all the traditional schools, unfortunately those match ups never occurred as far as I know. It is a very strong age group, overflowing with talent, particularly at Scots and Newington.

I’m sure I know you. I will PM you. I have a lot of friends in your year. 1992 what a feat. Never to be equalled I’m sure.
But, the sporting dominance of New in 1992 was in the Main summer sports. If I remember correctly. I believe we won a shared 2ndXV Rugby premiership with Joeys. The 1st XV struggled in the GPS Season, but set up a platform for the 1993 1st XV. 3 Australian School boys. One of the NZ Schoolboys they played against, was also an Ex-Newington boy. And that was a very talented NZ schoolboy side.

Also,I hate to admit it, the 1st XI Soccer team won everything that could be won in soccer as well.

Hi Dusk, DragonMan and all New supporters

The New backline for Rd 1 should be ( imo ) ;

9. Dickens ( should push for GPS 1 selection )
10. McGregor
11. J McLean
12 Barton
13 Townsend ( tackles and gives you another flyhalf option )
14 Takuomo/Quinn ( Takuomo could push for GPS 1)
15 Quinn/Takuomo

14,15 could interchange but I would go for my first option as Quinn is a good hole runner and would link well with Takuomo who can finish.
13 must be a good defender and that's why I would go for Townsend ahead of McLean.

Reserves are Williams, C. McLean and 2nds.

Simple. They have a 12 days to get it right. But as mentioned, I don't think it's the backs that are a big problem (need to tidy up their centre defense and run the ball more ). The forwards need to give them a good platform from set piece as well as quick recycled ball ( esp. out wide ). Don't give away cheap metres close to the ruck and slow the oppo down. If this happens, New are capable of scoring points. It's whether they can DEFEND.

Correct Black and White. 8 from 8 Summer premierships ( undefeated ). Joint premiership 2nd XV with Joeys after leading 15-0 at halftime ( move on !!) and undefeated football 1st win GPS and CIS.

Unfortunately, 1st XV won their first game v Kings at the SFS ( pre Bledisloe game ) yet lost all the rest. New did have a strong 93 team.
Jamie Kerr was the NZ schoolboy who left after yr8. Played for the Blues and scored the winning try against the Crusaders. Set him up a few times in 14's. Good player. Well balanced and knew the game.

Does it include the former 1st XV coach, who left New for Cranbrook. I meet him when I was privileged to be invited, to do some temporary teaching at Newington, some years later. A good man who reflected the professionalism of Newington, as a brilliant education institution Having taught part-time at both Newington and Kings, let me say that both schools are worth every cent a parent pays in school fees.

The holy grail of sporting dominance is winning the following in one year.

1st XI Cricket
Senior Athletics
1st VIII Rowing
1st XV Rugby

(basketball and all the other sports came much later)
Can any school lay claim to all of the big 4 in one year.

For the records Joeys came close
In 1956. It was cricket they missed out on.
In 1977. It was rowing

After watching several trial games around the gps, this is the backline I would pick for GPS 1s.
9. Billy Dickens.
Great young talent who is a big part of the newington team. Crisp pass with good organisation skills guiding his team around the park.
10. Joey Fowler
After coming back from a shoulder injury and a concussion, he was very impressive on the weekend. Setting up multiple tries, his kicking game is exceptional and I have the confidence that he will be in the side despite only playing 1 full game.
11. Oscar Jorgensen
This beast in my opinion has cemented his position in the team. His dominant fend and strong carries help his team get on the front foot, week after week. Wing is definitely his position.
12. Julien C or Tyrese Lokeni
Both are great players. Julien was the best for view on the weekend, having dominant defense and attack. Tyrese is a bigger body who has wonderful skills. Footwork and short passing game is outstanding. Interesting to see what the selectors do there.
13. Ronan Leahy or Max threkhold.
Ronan has played well this season, dominating Knox and scots with strong caries and dangerous footwork. Consistency is key, however I think he is in a very strong position to receive the 13 jersey. Max is also an exiting player. His illusiveness makes him such an exciting player. Watching the game against barker he dominated, being the best player on the park.
14. Hadley Tonga
This kid is quick. Tearing up teams with his speed, he has definitely cemented a spot in teams 1 or 2 for gps. Exciting young talent.
15. Max Jorgensen
Max is a lock for fullback. Playing gps 1s last year he deserves his position dominating the gps competition. Higher honours expected for him this year.

Interesting to see 4-5 boys mentioned above are still 17. Exciting future for these lads. What’s everyone else’s thoughts?
Other 10's who have proved themselves for more than 1 game, the majority of the tries on Sat were single handedly set up by the 15 as well

Also, to all New supporters, yes, its been a tough pre-season for our boys. But, I believe better days await us. But whatever the results, our 1st XV has a potentially excellent backline, that hopefully will entertain us and most importantly make us proud, to be supporters of Newington College. Sorry, I should make the point that without a Forward Pack, backs even excellent backs cannot score tries.

Hi Black and White

Yes. B. Gill. New should have kept him but he is doing very well at Cranbrook. Son is still at New.
Joker, I like you but a 1st premiership is a 1sts premiership. I know this is a Rugby forum and of course a 1stXV premiership is a great achievement for the boys that play that sport but I'm sure a 1st Premeirship in Football would be warmly received and celebrated by even the most hardened Joeys supporters. Don't think this has happened but it may. As long as it's not AFL. Was at the 1sts Water Polo final match earlier this year New v Joeys. New going for 5 in a row, Joeys their first. Try telling the Joeys 1st wp that their premiership was not their Holy Grail. What an atmosphere that was created by the Joey supporters ( as per usual ) but was matched by a loud New crowd. The b/w prevailed. Every 1st ( and 2nd's ) premiership means something and imo are of equal value. Just my opinion. Obviously the above mentioned sports are the "original" ones, but times have moved on and official GPS sports ( not AFL ) have expanded.

That backline looks incredible. I think having Siteni at 14 is the best position for him, and having Will Quinn play full-back would be great (he's proved himself against St Augustine).

Ok, lets change tack a bit and ask for your thoughts on the following.

Many here know I am in the culinary game and enjoy the food offerings at various schools.
So, just to keep it fun, what is the best food your school has to offer at your home games?
Open to all schools.

1st Premeirship in Football would be warmly received and celebrated by even the most hardened Joeys supporters. Don't think this has happened but it may.
In 1988 the AAGPS introduced football for the first time. Many cynically said this was done so other schools could win a winter premiership (which was rugby only from 1894) In 1988, Joeys was on roll having won six rugby titles since 1981, It was the lads from Bellevue that interrupted the dominance with an outstanding team in 1987. So with great excitment, it was thought how could a rugby powerhouse possibly win this?

Well, guess won those very first FOOTBALL 1st XI and 2nd XI premierships?

And yes, they were celebrated as were the other football premierships Joeys won in 1994, 1997 and 2012.
At a quick glance at the GPS records it shows Riverview are the dominate Football school.

I recall Dave Roberts' captains speech at the rally as one of the best. It had a biblical theme, something along the lines of Mr Fenech parting the seas and leading them to the promised land at Tarban Creek where they did win the first premiership.

The steak sandwich at Joeys is A grade, prime scotch fillet on a soft white bun, onion, sauce and mustard. If you are a glutton, go the rowers lot.

Hi Joker

Glad you took the bait. I knew Joey's had one the very first Football premierships and for a Rugby powerhouse, shows how diverse the athletes at Joeys were/are. Since then 3 more premierships. From time to time, Joeys have a very good crop of Football players. The word is they play Football like they do Rugby. Tough and tough.

Hey lads,

Was at scots vs shore on the weekend, scots handling shore very well, the 2s went down but had a stand out no.15 from scots and shore no.12, both underdogs for lower gps teams. overall i thought the 3,6,9,10,13 were key players from scots in the 1sts.

The steak was quality, yet inflation has come early at Joeys. $10 for any steak sandwich at the footy should be outlawed.
