.....if we're listing parental achievements, I'm proud to admit that I continued the tradition of the 4th XV/XI gauntlet laid down by my own father.

I reached the giddy heights of the Sixth XV (when there was no soccer) after a year with the 11/10 men (anyone remember Ward "Pally" Austin on 2SM?) but my inconsiderate son thought nothing of embarrassing me by playing in the Fourth XV.

Roosters winger Taane Milne and Parramatta forward Tepai Moeroa have been forced to withdraw from the NSW Under-18s team because their school won't release them. The pair, who are also highly regarded rugby union prospects, attend Newington College and told officials they couldn't play in the curtain-raiser to Origin II because of school commitments. Moeroa, who is a Penrith junior, holds the NSW Athletics under-13s, -15s and -17s shotput records. Jamal Idris still holds the under-9s record.​

Recruitment is poison to any competitive rugby competition and by concentrating player talent, ultimately poison to the development of widely based grass roots rugby in Australia.​

On this forum their seems to be a negative attitude to scholarships. Although some schools...well... they seem to give out more than other institutions. Scholarships are beneficial to the GPS. They increase the overall quality of rugby. The "imported" boys increase of the skills of the players they play with.The level of rugby that the First XV competition comprises of is unbelievable.
It is in some schools policies not to give out Co - Curricular Scholarships, and that is completely understandable.Those other schools that dont scholarship or dont give out many scholarships are still extremely competitive, because they are learning to play against bigger, stronger opponents.
And lastly, Grammar and High's rugby have not been ruined by other schools scholarships but their demographics.

Following this commentary over the last few days, I have taken a moment today to review the TSC lineup for '13. The results are this:
In '13, 18 boys have taken the field, of which 4 started at TSC in Prep, 9 started in Year 7, 3 started Year 10, 2 started Year 11. The Year 10 boys - 1 in an international student (pretty common for international students to attend from year 10 or 11), 1 is an indig bursary (with the expansion of the indig program at TSC) and 1 of the Year 11 starters has a dad & grandfather who are old boys. The remaining 2 I am unsure.

At the TSC rugby lunch last week it was commented that against Kings, TSC won 90% of the 30-odd fixtures that day. Is that a school that is focusing solely on a 1st XV title?

Well may we question the intentions of Tight head Lion, a seemingly disgruntled ex-employee of 2 GPS schools (& seems to be angling for a job at Grammar now). Your Rugby 7s tournament comment is a sad reflection of the delusional world that only you live in - I could find no student who has popped up at TSC after attending that tournament.

Your use of the words "the recruitment drive they have had in recent years' is a major overstatement. A stat that will no doubt surprise you and some of the other posters on this thread - of the 19 boys who have started for Kings 1sts this year in their two trials and two GPS games:

• 2 at least started at the school in the Prep,
• 10 started in year 7 and
• 3 started in year 8.

I'd love to compare this with Joeys, Riverview and even Shore!

Not literally, no.
But there's a whole movie genre devoted to the sale of ones soul.
And it's somewhat ironic that a religious school didn't read as far as Mark 8:36:
"36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?".
I knew that quote and I'm an atheist.
I couldn't care less whether its equivalent or not: he who pays the piper calls the tune.
Perhaps the dam has broken.
Those of us living a little closer to the real world can only hope so.

IMHO if you are on a scholarship then you are receiving "payment in kind" for your attendance and services. If you don't believe nor accept this then pay your own way and don't whinge about "school not releasing" etc.

and further to these sentiments . ... ... if you are not grateful to the school for giving you a great education "on the house" then I suggest you should just "pack up your toys and go home".

It was their choice, it was either SOO or NSW Schoolboy trials.
Guess what?
NSW Schoolboy trials is first base in being selected for a 6 week UK tour fully paid.
Newington doesn't own them. They are playing the system.

This I noted as well while attending the match. Good for Iggies for doing this.

No but, selection for NSW Schools I, which they achieved, is equivalent, and will no doubt lead to Aussie Schools.

the story in SMH was from the RL 'sin bin' gossip column and I suspect was a dig at Rugby for depriving the poor little RL boys the chance to play U18 SOO.
