Rugby 7s general chat

His raw talent is speed. He’s in competition with players who have a far more rounded skill set to play the game of Rugby & Rugby 7s. Catch, pass, tackle, decision making etc… Coaching staff would see much more of him than we do at training and lower tier competitions.

I’m not 100% sure but was Manenti even the coach that brought him over to 7s?

There are plenty of Rugby players that haven’t had half the opportunities that Williams has been given.

I hope he turns out to be a gun and goes to the Olympics with the team. It’s not like the team is killing it this season so far but I just think his ceiling may not be at that level.
It was Stephen Hoiles.

Manenti or someone in the program brought him back this year. He was dropped a few years back and has played club rugby since then.

It doesn’t help that he is a short ass, and has little to no passing/playmaking skills. His speed is great, but you need to be a bit more rounded in 7s.

Aussie 7s already have to cover for Maurice Longbottom in defence, and I say that tentatively as Maurice is a vicious defender. But reality is a smaller bloke like Maurice/Williams will always struggle to make a dominant/smother tackle against a bigger/taller player and stop the offload.

Nelson College, who played in NZ's first recorded rugby match in 1870, have been invited to a 7's tournament at Rugby School to mark 200 years since William Webb Ellis proved that's how long the English have been cheating at football...

Niall Guthrie (formerly Williams, sister of SBW) is quitting the sevens program to play NRLW.

A bit of a spare parts player these days but always puts in when she does get a run & by all accounts does a lot of work with the younger players. A big loss both player depth- & team culture-wise.

Would be very interested in what they've offered her to walk away from a 7s contract. A NZ7s base contract is $42k NZD plus $2k per tournament appearance. Woth what 9 tournaments this year she could earn $60k as a minimim. Being experienced it's likely more. There are very few offers higher than that out there for much of the talent in the NRLW at the moment.

NRLW is a growing threat for 7s and rugby in Oceania, it’s easy pickings to just poach a rugby player, kiwi or Australian.

It is and most certainly will be in particularly from 2025 onwards. But the current salary cap is $900k and that has to be spread across 22-24 players with a minimum of $30k a player. That's $660-720k with only $180-240k left over to pad out the offers to the more experienced players and stars.

Kelly Brazier taking time out to take up a coaching gig in Japan but will be back for the Olympic campaign. Sarah Hirini also taking a sabbatical to play in the Taiyo Seimei women’s sevens series between May and July. Both will go to Toulouse before taking up their Japan contracts.

Has the Dura hurt Fiji in the sevens? This year they are languishing mid table and you would expect their pathway to the Olympics is the final qualification tournament.

Previously your way out of the village was the 7s program but now you have the 15s program as well.

Also the NRL offers ways out as well.
