A thought provoking post from Buster. Have we reached a point where market forces kick in where the up and coming decide that the benefits of exposure in 1st Grade or 1st Colts are more important than the Uni package where they may have to patiently bide their time in lower grades.

HJ, I think this is more a case of an initiative by the states and the ARU, showing signs of working?

I know there is a very close link with the Australian Schoolboys & Syd Uni
Can you actually support this claim by naming all the Australian schoolboys playing for Uni. As Uni have only signed an average of 4 NSW 1st/2nd players per year for the past 10 years, and their team sheets for the past ten years in all colts grades show no more than two Australian Schoolboy players per year, where are they.

If Uni isn't signing any more than 4 NSW schoolboys per year, where are the other 42 players going?

Come on Gavin, you are saying Uni only have about 4 NSW schools players per year. Does this include players who go on and make Aust schools or are they separate?

To judge how successfully a colts programme grows rugby as opposed rugby players, we should perhaps look at the clubs attitude to the battlers (3rd XV and below players from the big rugby schools, 1st XV players from ISA Div 2 Schools, SJRU Opens Club players, players who failed to impress their Schoolboy association representative selectors).

These folk are the future of the rugby economy and represent the fat bit of the rugby pyramid. These guys buy the merch, tickets and foxtel subscriptions. They encourage their sons and daughters to play when they turn 6.

Do our battlers get turned away from Colts programmes because the "books are full" (when they may not be), or are they embraced as a challenge and work in progress?

Do the battlers think that there is a place for them in Shute Shield Colts, or is there a perception that Shute Shield Colts has become too elite, either they head off to Subbies, or stop playing rugby full stop.

It is what it is

Gavin, are you out there?
You've made some claims that don't look too solid.

Out of the list of players to clubs how many are locals to the clubs they joined.
How many of the Uni players are other clubs juniors
Alex Barko at Uni played NSW schools 2011

Syd Uni had at least 4 2004 Aust Schoolboys play for them in 2005.

5 of last years NZ Tour Aust Schoolboys at Uni in 2013 including Captain, and Goalkicker.

Edit: Both these young men spent a chunk of the year in Team Rehab.

I think Gavin is getting confused with 2nd colts
They had 3 players in there GF winning side who have played NSW schools plus 1 Aust schools player
1st colts did do it tough with only 7 players who have played NSW schools and the token Aust schools player
I would think most clubs would be ecstatic if they got 2 or3 NSW schools players.

Bear in mind that some kids get 2 years in Colts, and there will be residue from 2011 Aust Schoolboys, 2011 NSW Schoolboys I & II still knocking around in Colts in 2013 at some clubs.

Not all are fast tracked into Grade after only 1 Colts season.

Looking at the numbers of 2012 rep players and where they went this season it is of little surprise that Wicks, Norths, Manly and Uni were at the top of Colts 1 table.

I do believe that some of these kids missed out on a fair amount of the season through injury, and in Horwitz case, did not play colts at all.

Natoli and Stewart also had cameos in 1st grade for their clubs.

Norths and Randwick finished 3rd and 4th in the regular season table but Warringah and Souths knocked both clubs out of the finals and I think this shows that Warringah and Souths struggled with depth during the regular season but were able to get close to the best 15 on the field when it mattered and I think Warringah beat Randwick 2 out of the 3 times they played and same with Souths over Norths but in the end Uni and Manly were the 2 best sides.
Can't wait for next years colts as it could be a great comp in 2014

Gavin

Frank Row (1)
I repeat, there are 46 players each year who represent at 1st and 2nds NSW schoolboys. Most are eligable for 2 years in colts. That makes 92 players.

Manly and Norths aren't far behind SU in their signings, and they happen to be two of three clubs that have introduced an "elite development programme" in the last two years. It's no coincidence that the clubs who have decided to emulate S.U. have seen significant improvement in their performances while those that have bitched and complained the most have been languishing.
