Really like how this team may come together. Some good fire power and depth through the backline. I'd love Lancaster to be involved come tournament time. Has looked more than comfortable in the 7s team amongst men.

Hope they can come together better than last years team. They looked like strangers playing together.

Anyone prepared to put a 1-15 down? I honestly only know anything about the NSW boys, so I'd be bias.

Darby not picked in the squad because of 7's duties, I'm pretty bullish on Miava. Has played Super Rugby & regarded down here as our best to come through since bobby v

I rate Vaihu. Think he has something special.

If you want to look far too deep into it there are some combinations around like Wilson 9 and Bowen 10 from Easts and NSW. Then there is Bowen and O'Donnell who were 10,12 together at a schoolboy level for years at Riverview.

I think Jorgensen is the best Fullback in the squad but young which could see him on a Wing or Bench. Again, I am writing this with a NSW knowledge base.

Only one open side flanker and five No. 8's seems very unbalanced. One injury and the squad is stuffed.

Pools announced for the U20s world cup:

Kicks off June 24 in South Africa.

More details here:
Wow not often you see the Kiwis with a tournament ranking like that. Hopefully a sign that other countries have caught up.

When you consider the difference in the development pathways over 2021/22 it’s a pretty scary prospect having England and Ireland in our pool.

Our U20’s have done very little since preparation for the 2020 tournament was abandoned due to Covid. 2021 featured a couple of camps before the two game series against NZ was called off again because Covid, Jacinta burst the travel bubble a week before the first game. Last year saw us being out performed Argentina and totally outclassed by NZ. In 2019 we bettered NZ in both U18’s and U20’s.

Meanwhile the Six Nations have had two seasons of U20’s competition and are two rounds into their third. Nice to be ranked #2, but is probably the least meaningful ranking seen for this tournament.

Hopefully the 2023 group can reverse the trend of last year.

Can someone explain to me why those fowards are looking very different from the squad named at the end of the season last year? Just looks like there are some guys missing that were playing impressive footy in the 19’s champs I.e Clem halaholo and Oscar Hicks?
(Just to name a few)

Go back and watch Maiava in 2022 tournament. Extremely surprised he is picked again. Same for Hough.

Agree on Wilson and Bowen. Jorgenson looks special but could be made to look silly if rushed too early like we have a habit of doing with kids. Don’t pick Aubrey if he is going to play wing - will have no impact.

Selectors need to really study some game tape of this squad. Skill level with a few is lacking and they will be found out. Name and reputation squad without proper benchmarking will provide a similar result to 2022. Way too many of the same names tells me it has been a lazy selection process again.

Lynagh is behind Bowen. A few more comment to come on this. Don’t want to see them fail again.

Why would you waste 2 talented fullbacks on the wing?
