I hope the waratahs explode.

i hope they stick with why they have been successful the last few years and forget trying to force passes to impress people that really dont matter that much

This would be the 10k or so of supporters who have gone MIA?

Yeah but you always seem to put I instead of 1. Is your keyboard configured as Dvorak or something? :)

On the eve of the IRB Sevens tournament to be staged in Adelaide this weekend, Australian Sevens captain Patrick McCutcheon has signed a Super 14 contract with the HSBC Waratahs for the next two seasons.

McCutcheon has made his name as a Sevens player on the world circuit over the last three years, with his experience and leadership resulting in him being named captain of the 2009/10 squad.

However the Sydney University backrower has always maintained ambitions of playing in the Super 14 and will now have his best opportunity to do so after securing a deal with his home state which will take him through to the end of the 2012 season.

Born in Narromine in central west NSW and hailing from St Joseph's College at Hunters Hill, McCutcheon was named captain of the 2005 Australian Schoolboys team which also included Kurtley Beale, Peter Betham, Quade Cooper, Ben Daley, James Hanson, Christian Lealiifano, Ben Lucas, Ben McCalman, David Pocock, Lachie Turner, Brando Va'aulu and Sam Wykes.

In 2006 McCutcheon joined the NSW Academy as an 18-year-old and was later selected as vice-captain of the Australian team which went on to win the IRB Under 19 World Cup.

A member of the HSBC Junior Waratahs, McCutcheon found himself on the verge of Super 14 selection in 2008 when he travelled with the NSW squad to Dunedin as the 23rd man ahead of their clash with the Highlanders, and was also taken to Christchurch on standby for the Super 14 Final. The Sevens skipper said he has used those experiences as a key motivation in striving to make it at the next level.

"I learned a lot going on that trip in 2008 and have always had ambitions to make it in Super 14, particularly with the Waratahs who I have been with since I left school," said McCutcheon. "Shawn Mackay played Sevens for many years and also made it to the Super 14, so I never lost hope that I'd be able to do the same.

"You spend a lot of time on the road with the Sevens squad, and certainly your game and body adapt to the fitness requirements of the game. That sometimes made it hard when I've come back to play for Sydney Uni or the Junior Tahs, but I feel I've been able to do adapt to both forms of the game and this is a great reward for that.

"My short term goal at the moment is to finish the season off strongly with the Sevens team, and in particular we're looking for a really strong performance in Adelaide in front of our home fans. We're having our best season in quite a while and knowing I may not get the chance to be back again I'm going to make the most of it."

The Adelaide Sevens kicks off on Friday at Adelaide Oval with the tournament concluding with the finals on Sunday.

What is his contract? Full or academy?

edit he was a pro academy, I guess he has a full now.

So who isn't? (getting\wanting a contract)

I'd suggest its full.

It states he's signed a S14 contract for the next two years. Which could prove a problem considering the S15 starts next year. Perhaps he gets a week off?

Regardless, he had an academy contract previously and I don't believe academy players can be offered new academy contracts.

So, yeah, full.

They are Kiwi's that live in Bondi along with another 90,000. Ask WJ. He'll explain. He has all the stats to back it up. Walked the streets himself he says. Apparently the 10K will come once the Kiwi teams arrive. WJ has negotiated them away from their various hydroponic activities.

Players can have Tahs Academy (JW) contracts for more than one year, but they are usually offered one year at a time and it suits both parties. Some have a pro JW contract with a S14 rookie contract chaser in Yr.2

Who really knows though?: Kane Douglas, Pat McCutcheon and Ed Jenkins were all in the Tahs pro Academy in 2009 and were named again for 2010. Jenkins and McCutcheon are still there but Douglas would have to have been promoted to S14 rookie status if that old RUPA protocol is still in place - that you have to get a rookie contract after playing in 3 Super matches.

The amateur JWs are usually all young and just in for one or two years. Of the 16 in 2009 2 have pro JW jobs in 2010, 6 are back in the amateur JWs and 8 have been discarded. They may be picked for a pro job later if they are good enough when they have learned their trade on the job.

I thought that the reason why Beau Robinson was discarded by the Tahs was that McCutcheon would be promoted to be Waugh's eventual successor, but I was wrong: Alcock got the S14 job with Coridas in the mix also. None of the 3 are specialist fetchers but in the new law regime it probably doesn't count as much.

I don't know how long Coridas' and Alcock's S14 contracts are for. If they go beyond 2010 the Tahs could have 3 wannabie successors to Waugh on their hands. Not very clever.

Alternatively, their contracts could be just for 2010 with a proviso that they would be assessed for 2011 on their performances in the JW games just concluded. Maybe they will get notice fairly soon that they will not be wanted by the Tahs for 2011; so that Melbourne has time to put them in their stable if they are wanted. In that scenario McCutcheon emerges as first string of the wannabies.

All that could be crap; but it was fun thinking it through.

ahh blue, as i said previously, thankyou for checking the census info and waving your special visa conditioned finger in my face. i was joking dude, but i wasnt joking about kiwi teams (the one winning at the time) attracting bigger crowds to tahs games. The kiwis come out of the woodwork when a kiwi team is playing, i know this cos ive been there, is it true that you have dinner with nelson on thursdays?

I reckon it's a full contract and I suspect Coridas is the one to make way for him. Has had a bad run with injury but hasn't really lived up to the hype. Was on the bench for JWs on the weekend and didn't get a lot of time.

Coridas - yeah he didn't get much time and I barely recognised him with his hair cut. He seems to be the forgotten man. I have a theory that he and Alcock got a S14 contract this year so the Tahs could fill up their rookie quota.

Definitely true, and they don't show up much for the SAffer games however good or bad the SAffer team is. And when a Kiwi team is playing at the SFS they are often louder than the vanilla Tahs fans.

But - may all their sons and grandsons be Waratahs and Wallabies.

Wow - so Paddy Ryan is stepping up to Dan Palmer's Tahs 4th string prop spot. I'd like to hear Brucie's opinion on Paddy. He and Cowan were the best schools LHPs I ever saw but Ryan disappeared from the radar after school and emerged as a THP for the Broadway boys after a while.

Now I know what happened to him after he left school: he went to Ireland for a gap year. With his name and that country, he couldn't have done better. Maybe he saw Munster play.

Then later when Weeks went north, and Sydney Uni were looking for a replacement, Paddy eventually got the 3 jersey and held onto it. At 21 years old and 120kgs he is tall for a THP, but it never bothered Carl Hayman.

I've always liked McCaffrey's play and rated him higher at the 2007 Schools tournament than Jake Schatz who has been on the park for the Reds already. Like Schatz he will have to beef up a bit to be an effective S14 no.8; so watch this space.

Ryan and McCaffrey are more than just token holders of rookie contracts for 2011 because they have been signed for 2012 already. They must have been highly regarded by the Tahs coaching mafia to make a firm offer in the face of southern competition for their services.
