Does it warm the cockles of anyone else's heart to see Souths pick up the wooden spoon? So arrogant for so long and now a shambles - both at the top and throughout the club. Brings a smile to an old timer who suffered at the hands of magpie arrogance for many years. Hard to see them improving any time soon with no money, ordinary colts, dwindling juniors and in an area with little rugby development/future. They made a prems GF (and won a colts GF) a couple of years ago as a direct result of handing out $$$$. Now the dollars have gone and so have the players. Perhaps I am too old and too cynical and remeber too readily the arrogance of the Souths of the 90's but like no other club I enjoy watching the magpies demise.

My tip is that Souths will be in the cellar or thereabouts on a regular basis for the next decade (as GPS did through the 80's and Norths through the last 20 years).

A little over the top? As much joy as it gives you, it is hardly good for the game.

I was hoping that Ikalaheti or another GPS supporter might give us a run down of the players here. I've only seen GPS play a couple of times and the players I've noticed most are the Smith brothers in the front row, Caldeira-Santos the reserve hooker and Mogi Wei, the nuggety breakaway. Not to say the others aren't worth a mention, just don't know who they are. Quite a young backline and the 10. Smith seems to have a good head for a young bloke. I notice Franks is the halfback. Not bad to have that experience around finals time. Is Frisby (I think that's his name) injured? He looked impressive from what I've seen.

They will be the underdogs but good luck to them on Sunday!

Frisby broke his hand against Sunnybank I think. Liam Ferguson at 2 is a long time GPS player who spent all last year in 1st Grade. #4 Carpenter is a young colt just out of school and only 18 yrs - one to watch for the future. Dan Gorman played prems last year. #8 Murphy is a visitor from Ireland and tough as nails as many of them are. #10 Smith colts last year, #11 Winkley colts last year as is #12 Herbert (yes son of Anthony). Not sure of #13 Davui, I think from Norths league, #14 Roberts a long time GPS player and Josh Logan at #15 an exciting full back who trained with Australian 7's squad last year.

I think the average age of the team would only be about 22, even the Smith brothers are yet to turn 21, so yes a lot of development to go and I for one am really excited about next year providing no major losses.

Well, with a moniker like mine I'm hardly going to agree with your accusations of arrogance. Yes, it's been a tough year, but every club experiences this at some time, and for all sorts of reasons. As for our Juniors, well, 4 have been selected to represent the Australian Schoolboys. Hardly, I would have thought, a sign of "dwindling juniors".

have only met a couple of Souths committee members to, certainly no arrogance that I noticed. Personally I find it hard to get excited when a club struggles as I know that most clubs are made up of people who are trying bloody hard to do best they can for their club.

It can be so hard to get people to help out around clubs. Regardless of the club or the competition, these people are the unsung heros of grassroots rugby. I dip my lid to anybody who volunteers to help their club.

Don't confuse passion with arrogance. Souths did it hard from the 1940s to the 1980s and with one of the tightest memberships through the Lauries connection there are a number of players who have decades of family tradition. No matter how much success you think they have had since the 1980s the memories of what they have endured are strong among that group. I would be loathe to write them off with an old boy network of Horan, Crowley etc who are very active in the Rugby and corporate community.

I've been to Souths on match day many times over the past thirty years and I can assure you that, even for an old Tigers bloke, the welcome there is as warm as anywhere in Brisbane. They are struggling at the moment for a number of reasons but there is a wonderful sense of "club" there and I predict that they'll be an important part of Brisbane rugby for many years to come.

In terms of the games this weekend I think it will be much closer than first thought..... Uni v Brothers will be close too as there is 100 years of history between these two clubs that always makes sure that the players are up for a big one.

Well Jets certainly nailed that! I believe we can now declare that it's anyone's premiership this year. Next Sunday's Uni v Bank will be a classic, that's for sure.

As I wrote that I remembered that Easts won both their games against Brother's and their first game against Uni. Not that I will dwell on what could have been!!!!!!!

I wasn't at Ballymore yesterday but heard that the Brothers v. Uni game was a cracker with a very physical forwards battle. Apparently the game went down to the wire with both teams having a chance to put the game away at the end, until a barnstorming run from Shipperley sealed the game for Brothers. Would love to hear a game report from someone who was there.

Really surprising result given that Uni had carved their opposition for the preceding month and Brothers were going into the game on the back of losses against Easts and Wests. Somehow the Filth really do turn up against the old enemy.

Hard to predict who will win next week out of Sunnybank and the Students. Obviously the Bank were in ominous form given the scoreline. I heard Lucas went well at 9. for them. Might be worth a trip out to Ballymore to watch that game.

looking at brothers team i think they can do it this weekend. they have finals experience, physicality and speed- everything needed to stop the uni machine. Also they have a 10 who directs his team around the park. i just think their centres lack punch is only weakness.. should be good game.

P.s this doesnt make me a filth supporter- but i do think they have been prematurely written off.

I went out to bring our colts home...I'm glad I made the trip up. Got home after giving away a big start. Stayed on to watch the Uni-Brothers game. The Filth did very well to get over the top of Uni after also being down early. Damon Murphy did well to direct his team. It was a very even game with neither team being able to gain ascendency. Dave McDuling and Con Foley were Unis best while I thought Price and Murphy were best for Brothers. What surprised me the most was that Brothers scrum got the best of Uni, I thought Uni would win that battle. They missed Hansen.
If you like one-sided battles, the early game was a cracker. While Lucas was good for Sunnybank he wasn't alone. His two passes for one of Setu's tries were both gems but I thought Tapuia was good, perhaps tries to do too much at times, Setu and Sunila were good also. The Bank pack was quite awesome and I think they are the team to watch

Con Foley has to be part of the national academy set up next year. He's a 19yr old kid who has never been part of a program and is standing out in a team full of professional players. Could make a great 13 too if given the right coaching.

Been hearing this kids name a bit recently Jets. He has been getting good wraps all year and as you say, is doing very well to be standing out in the quality Uni backline. I have heard that he was in the Aus U19 team that played England some weeks back and was one of the better performers that day as well. Could be wrong but I'm sure I heard he was awarded some sort of Seven's contract, which would mean that he is part of the wider ARU program.
