Maybe the theme could be something like ocean creatures. Then you'd get people dressing up as giant squid, jellyfish, mermaids etc. I think it should be something that inspires some pretty funny stuff.

I heard the theme was 'prep boy' and 'Sunday best' keeping in line with eastern suburbs tradition

Round 3: Wellington: 30-31 January
Round 4: Sydney: 6-7 February

Auckland 9's was held on the weekend of 31 Jan-1 Feb in 2015, It will be interesting to see whether the scheduling of the 7's draw influences this differently and what potential implications there are.

Auckland 9's dates are Feb 6 & 7. They've dropped ticket prices by ~$30, two-day passes start at $69. Attendance in 2015 was ~4K down on 2013.

Wellington 7's ticket prices also down but start at $137 for a two-day pass but there will be more flexible options incl half-day passes.

Yes, so they moved the event to avoid clashing with the Wellington 7's, which is a bit of a shame for the Sydney 7's as the Auckland 9's will chew up media space.

You mean we'll chew up their media space!

SBW hasn't yet played the game let alone been named in a squad for Sydney or anywhere else. Not saying it won't happen but there remains the possibility that he and/ or Quade, neither with a background in the game, won't pick it up quickly enough to justify selection.

I can kinda see Aus picking Quade anyway, but strongly suspect SGT would only pick an unworthy player under direction from HQ & would, one way or another, make it pretty clear that such was the case.

Gordon Tietjens has been frothing at the chance to have SBW play 7's for years:

"Sonny Bill Williams would make the transition to sevens, there's no question about that," he said.

"Mainly because he fits the culture that we live. Not only is he a humble guy, but he's got a great work ethic.

"He works very hard, sets himself challenges and goals and goes out and gets them. He obviously has the work ethic, the skill-set, and is a real athlete. He could obviously be a very, very good player."

Mate, I'm not suggesting it can't, won't or shouldn't happen, just pointing out that we're talking about two guys who've never played the game & will be 15's-committed through to October "headlining" a 7's comp in six months time.

That's one helluva learning curve not to mention they'll need to change their body shape a fair bit (Cooper, being leaner already probably less so) and there has to be the possibility that one or both of them won't manage the transition (or, God forbid, get injured in the meantime).

And, yes, I'm aware of SGT's interest in SBW but I doubt he'll be picked sight-unseen.

I think there is almost a 100% chance of Cooper and SBW featuring in the Wellington and Sydney 7s events.

They may only get bench cameos, but given how important the success of both events are to the NZRU and ARU I reckon there may be a fair bit of pressure to include them in the wider squads.......

Yep, the 2015-2016 Sevens series will be done with one eye on Rio, i expect Quade, SBW and any other Rio hopefuls will be given bulk time by the coaches to adjust and learn the game in time for the Olympics.

The sevens championship trophy is second to a Rio Olympic gold medal in 2016.

No disrespect to the existing Sevens guys, but give Quade and SBW a month of training and they'll be killing it. I'd have them at very short odds to be starting in Wellington and Sydney if fit.

SBW no. I don't think he'll be good at 7s at all. Too big, not that fast, and not skilled at the ruck.

Quade will obviously add a lot to the attack but his success will be judged on his play without the ball.

Disagree somewhat on SBW: will need to lose 5+ kg & work on his 0-10m speed but def has the POTENTIAL to be the big guy taking the ball into contact, drawing the D & setting up the next phase. Ruck work may not be that necessary provided he's dominant in the tackle, of course.

Agree on Quade: has the POTENTIAL to be very good on attack (but from where? First receiver = rather more contact than he seems comfortable with, sweeper = rather less involvement than you'll be wanting from him). As you say, it's his off the ball work that could be the issue.

Love to see them both make the transition quickly & well enough to light up the World Series & Rio 7's, just yet to be convinced it's possible/ likely in the time available.

Ben Ryan (coach of Fiji 7's, former coach of England) has said fairly recently that he thinks a team of 15's superstars with 2 months of training would beat a team of current 7's specialists:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ru...of-frustrating-time-in-charge-of-England.html

The best 15's guys are the superior rugby players and have all the skills required for 7's. They just have to get fitter and learn the tactics and shape of the game. It's not as big a switch as changing from league to rugby for example, where players have to actually learn several new skills.

If the Coaches want the 6-8 months commitment from players, they should be entitled to get it.

In the SH, that means they miss the Super Rugby Season. Don't know what arbitrary point will be selected up North, but they'll probably pick one.

It'll be interesting to see which players make the switch. Cooper obviously, but other Aussies? McMahon? Gill? Morahan?

Similar for the Saffas. And the French. And the Argies.

Fijians have the differing financial structures. And how will the RFU do it? Will they request the WRU and the SRU play players they've got their eyes on, and will they do the same?

fun year of Sevens coming up.

Any players signed with a Super Rugby team won't be playing 7's.. It's unreasonable to expect a Super a Rugby team to pay the wages of a player who won't be playing for them in 2016.
