COVID-19 Stuff Here

Novak is going to learn just how short-tempered and cranky the general public is right now. I reckon all the pent up frustration with government ineptitude, testing fuck ups, lockdowns and general frayed emotions is going to be laser-focused on him.

I'm going to try for a stadium ticket just to add my voice to the crescendo.

Yeah and if I was a Victorian I'd feel the same way.

Ironically, they let him in - I guess - to boost ticket sales but surely he'll have to play all his matches behind closed doors. Public Enemy #1.
If there is a crowd, umps will spend minutes on end pleading with the fans to please stop booing. Ballboys will spend most of the time sopping up water balloons, grog balloons, spoof balloons, biffed water bottles, grog cans, piss and spew balloons, all over the fucken court. Djokovic will be sitting courtside crying within 30 minutes and will have stormed off centre court in a huff within the hour. It'll be great theatre, wish I could be there.

That the Aus Open becomes a proxy Balkan war each year is pretty shameful, but the Croat part of the crow is going to be absolutely feral at his matches haha

That annoys me. I thought the Vic Govt had said that anyone involved with the Open would need to be vaccinated or did I dream it?
Not dreaming. Dan Andrews - "What I want to make very clear is that the State of Victoria will not be applying for ANY exemptions for unvaccinated players".

There is another way of looking at the predicted crowd reaction to the Joker's appearance.
People may see that letting him in shows the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of the utterly unwarranted restrictions on the proles, and will support his stance.
Given Novac has had Covid, his resistance to getting jabbed when he is already immune seems logical.

That's a good shout. There has been an ugly undertone of that over the years, taking over from the outright warfare between Croat and Serbian soccer clubs that preceded it in Melbourne.

You would be wrong on both counts…

It appears that Tennis Australia agrees that getting vaccinated is an individual decision. For some.

Sure is. Novak can decide not to get vaccinated, no one's going to hold him down to be jabbed. And Tennis Australia/Victorian government/whomever can equally decide he's not welcome.

Ball's in your court, Novak.

Djokovic is reported to have had COVID-19 in June 2020. One criterium for a medical exemption at the AO is a dose of COVID-19 in the last six months; if that's the case for Novak the earlier infection doesn't seem to've resulted in any sort of immunity.

FF (Folau Fainga'a), that argument doesn't hold up.

The process for the exemption was apparently an ATAGI review followed by a Vic department of health review. Both anonymous. So no active policy decision or value judgement on covid immunisation by anyone.

Given the short list of exemptions available I am sceptical about the information the panels were provided, but good luck chasing down a doctor in Serbia if they did massage the truth on the medical back up for the exemption.

Maybe we should just introduce a rule that to enter Melbourne Park you need to demonstrate double vaccination regardless of border exemptions.

Tennis Australia is challenging Rugby for the title of worst administered sport in Australia! Cameron Clyne and Roger Davis watch out!

That being the case, it then comes down to the Dan Andrews government allowing a high profile tennis player to enter the state for the dollars he brings to the live games and the telecast.
Mandatory vaccines for most people but not all.
Just like NSW allowing Rebel Wilson in without having to quarantine.
The exemptions make a mockery of compulsory vaccines and lockdowns.

This is getting bigger than Ben Hur.
Now Morrison is threatening to overturn Andrews' decision to allow Djokovic into Victoria, if Novak "does not comply with our border requirements. If he is not vaccinated, he must supply acceptable proof that he cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. .....If that evidence is insufficient.....he'll be on the next plane home."

It's the battle of the titans. ScoMo with constitutional power and Dan with the biggest rat cunning arsenal of any politician in Australia.

It wasn’t Andrews’ decision… Stoff has already explained:

It’s also a blind process, so that the Tennis Australia and Vic Health department panels are not supposed to know the identity of the person applying for exemption…

Also…

The Victoria state government said it had refused to formally support Djokovic’s visa application and it was reported that the visa with which he attempted to enter Australia does not allow for exemptions for unvaccinated applicants.

“The federal government has asked if we will support Novak Djokovic’s visa application to enter Australia,” Pulford said. “We will not be providing Novak Djokovic with individual visa application support to participate in the 2022 Australian Open grand slam [tournament]. We’ve always been clear on two points: visa approvals are a matter for the federal government, and medical exemptions are a matter for doctors.”
