Yes, but also more and more as a seperate entity where their training focuses more on speed and agility and the 15s more bulk and power. There are obvious crossovers but they are very different games.

Somewhat.

I think from a strength/power conditioning stand-point things would be reasonably similar, with the caveat of 7s players having to watch their skinfolds to the extreme (thus limiting that power output).

The big difference is in the 'motor'. 7s guys need the ability to repeat short powerful efforts with short rests, but for shorter periods of work overall, plus they need to recover quicker between games. Whereas, XVs guys need to repeat those efforts over a longer period of time, but with higher rest ratios, and much higher recovery. .

It's not as simple as speed V power.

TBH, with the lower training age these U20s guys have I think they'd actually be substantially less specialised than older athletes. So it would be less of an issue.

I guess what I'm getting at is I think guys misdiagnose the different between XVs and 7s athletes as 'conditioning' when really the difference is more about the skills, habits, and structures they work on day-to-day.

Couldn't agree more, hence my earlier post re arrack and defensive structures. Also agree that crossover at this age group not as difficult., particularly for outside backs.Obviously pick them if they're good enough.

When you're talking professional Super Rugby versus 7's there is a big difference, guys like SBW and Speight trimmed weight to play 7's.

But when talking U20s versus 7's the difference isn't as big IMO. At that point most U20s are still amateur, and physically still developing.. any form of professional conditioning is better then what most were receiving otherwise.

The biggest difference like mentioned already, is structure and general play.

I'd be happy for them to prove themselves in camp and the warm up games, pre the final squad being named.

They are training in a fully professional environment after all.

If the Aus Under 20s want the Sevens players the same system will apply as it does for the Super Rugby players who are still U20s, that they want.

The organisation they are contracted will have to release them for the training camp at Bond University and they will play a couple of Oceania Cup matches.

It will be up to the Aus U20 coaches to decide who to apply for and they will make a judgement as to whether the Sevens players are in the right shape for XVs before they do that. They may not want them.

Hutchison may be chosen as a 13, his best position in XVs, or maybe on the wing. Though he is small his tackling technique is sound.

Kennewell was in the Oz U20s last year as a winger and I doubt that Sevens training would have corrupted him so much since then that he can't play there again to effect.

But as Shakespeare would say: "The play's the thing …" Play in the Oceania games will reveal whether the Sevens players are suitable or not.

I think McNamara & McDermott would be the only Qld u20s involved in 7s.

From the Rugbylink Super 20s draw below, there seems to be only a few 20s games will match up as curtain raisers in R1 Waratahs v Force & R5 Rebels v Waratahs.

I heard rumour that Reds20s home fixtures will be played at Wests & Brothers this year not Suncorp or Ballymore - yet to be confirmed. Has anyone else heard anything, Happy to Chat?

Reds20s trials are
Sat 11 Feb v Wests
Sat 18 Feb v Norths

Trial squads should be announced soon, less a few rehab guys & my punt for Reds20s Captain this year is “Wrongas” - Liam Wright.

I emailed the boys at BarTV Sports re Super 20 livestreaming & they kindly advised…at this stage we are negotiating to expand the coverage from last year to covering every game - so hopefully yes.

Nothing heard yet on fixtures.
Your punt on Liam Wright would be correct however he has not been training with the team as yet. He is still seconded to the main squad to fill in for the Japan players.

I really appreciate what Bar TV do, giving us access to sport that we otherwise wouldn't see, but I just don't vibe with their commentary.

Too light on knowledge and heavy on colour, even when compared to Fox Sports.

There was an interesting refereed hit-out by the NSW Gen Blue U20s against Randwick, Tuesday.

I think they scored 3 tries to 1 or something like that - I missed the start.

The Randwick side was a mixture of fellows from the club that Owen Finegan and others were looking at for different levels - not a real team in itself. Most of them were older than the Gen Blue team but they had some Colts themselves.

The U20s look decent but the number of turnovers after contact (from both sides) was deplorable.

Prop Harry Johnson-Holmes played on the loosehead side and looks like natural leader with a singular vocabulary.

There were a lot of good halves - both at 9 and 10 - and any number of rabid backrowers including Harry McClennan who has retained the mongrel he had at school.

Spoke to Lachlan Swinton who is a natural 6 for senior rugby. He should be right to play by the end of the week.

Some of the backs the U20s got from Colts look good, but understandably they need to play together more to improve their combinations under pressure.

Not a lot of outright stars or dominant forwards but there were some good signs.

It looks like Jaffer Williams, Dan Matthews and Mohi have been moved up to the 20s.
It was a bit hard to know who was who but the 20s number 9 Banjo Travers looked good

Good stuff Lee, do you think they have the stuff to take the comp out?

Their coach would be unhappy with their individual skills like ball security being under par - more so than their combinations going awry.

What do you mean by 'singular vocabulary'? Interesting turn-of-phrase.
