Ashes 2021-22

Problem is, there are no other openers knocking at the door. If you study the Sheffield Shield averages, there isn't a single opener averaging above the mid 30's.
On another note, I would love to see Green bat naturally. I know it's easy for me to say, particularly in some of the circumstances he's been in, but he averages 51 in Shield cricket, not by bashing, but by quality, aggressive batting and taking the initiative away from the bowlers. So far in test cricket he looks like he's just hanging on, waiting to get out. I'm sure it's a confidence issue, he just needs one big innings to break out.

So Harris cracks out a jammy 70 to save his career. Not sure that's really a great outcome for Aus.

It isn't ideal, but the best 3 bats in the team collectively put on 55 so there aren't many other ways to read it.

The other issue is we're likely to be chasing a small target if the wicket keeps playing like this, so he's under no threat.

Just have to hope that one of the bowlers steps up to take a bunch of wickets and prevent Harris from winning MOTM.

Probably waiting on Pucovski to ... ah, ... get his head right.

TBF that might be a case of "if rather than when" - but he does have four seasons of first class cricket at an average of 53.

No. 3, potential opener.

this season alone we have Renshaw, Khawaja, Marsh, Bancroft and Hunt all averaging over 45 (or close enough too)

Where to now with the fast bowlers? Are Cummins, Hazelwood and Starc still the best three? What is the pecking order across Boland, Neser, Richardson and Abbott - others?

Boland could not have been more impressive and far surpassed my expectations. Can he reproduce form away from the MCG anywhere near as good?

Aus currently have four batsmen and three bowlers rated in the top ten lists. Exceptional effort.

Boland is reported to be the second test player with indigenous heritage. I always thought Graeme Thomas had an aboriginal heritage as well, but turns out apparently was part American Indian. Indigenous, nevertheless, but just not Australian.

Bancroft, Renshaw and Hunt all only average 36/37 in Shield, Mitchell Marsh 31, Shaun Marsh averages 42 but is 38 years old.
The exception is Khawaja, however the question is whether you consider him an opener.

Does it matter? I'll fucking pad up with Davey and we'll still win by a thowwwwwwsand...

Saw a post from an analyst saying the final hour of bowling last night was the best on their model/metrics since their records began in 2006. Combined with the atmosphere at the MCG (Smith said it was the loudest crowd he’d heard since the 2015 WC final), I can’t recall such an exhilarating passage of play which wasn’t the final session in the match.

Root six hundreds this year, the other 24 players used managed one between them & only Root & Malan averaged better than 29. ECB will surely have to re-think the balance between white- & red ball cricket in their domestic comps: I note that CA still scheduled five rounds of Sheffield Shield prior to BBL starting.

This is why central contracts have to become a thing of the past

The different formats are becoming more and more specialised

England shifted their focus to white ball cricket to try and win the 2019 World Cup and it worked but off the back of it a lot of the squad are white ball cricketers that with varying success they have tried to turn into red ball players
