Tigers put 50 on University. Easts were still well below their best in several aspects.

Elliot Hagen & Johnny Wilder had awesome games.

Don't know about anyone else but I think Matt Gordon looks the goods. Apart from 1 bad luck he had a blinder. I think he has to be considered for NRC, especially as a specialist 12.

I thought he had a rare off game. A few handling errors and a rare poor arvo with the boot. He is normally unreal with his kicking clearances.

I agree Campbell & Gordon should be on the NRC radar, but it's always difficult to judge when there is so much other talent around.

Elliot Hagen is a certainty, he completely outplayed JJ Taulagi and always creates something when he's got the pill.

The Tigers really missed Barker at line out time. A few new faces in the pack meant the set peice was below their best. Sanday made a big difference at tighthead when he came on.

For Uni, I thought Harry Parker looked good at 13. There's not much too him but he runs hard and tackles hard. Moses Sorovi at halfback has been going very well.

I see that former Reds player Nic Berry was the ref in the Brothers v Bond Prem reserve game yesterday. Any reports on how he went? It's always good to see former players take up the whistle once they stop playing.

Good to see him still involved the game, his forced retirement from the game due to concussions was pretty scary to hear about.

'It was awful,' he said. 'I'd be panicking all the time. I'd get home and couldn't remember if I'd done or said something inappropriate. I had this feeling of being out of control and completely losing track of my emotions. I'd get up in the morning and forget where I'd put my keys or wallet the night before. Then I'd realise they were right in front of my face.
'Everyone at Wasps was incredibly supportive, but I wouldn't let on how bad things were.
'I learned to cope. It almost became normal. I'd get through a training session, then get home and slump on the couch for a day-and-a-half.'

Brothers won in a close game against Bond. Criff Tupou and Sam Hyne were outstanding for the Brethren. The game's result depended on whatever team demonstrated the best defensive effort. I have to say that Bond are a strong side, but at times lacked possession and execution. In the end, Brothers just held onto the ball for the majority of the last 20 minutes as the clock wound down.

I watched a bit of the Manly Marlins v University of Queensland game. At least I thought it was the Marlins to begin with, but it turned out to be the Tigers donning a different jersey for Ladies Day. Both the Marlins and Easts are leading their respective comps, so the mistake is understandable.
Congrats to Easts though, but I think they will be tested against the Maggies.

Brothers sneak into second, Uni drop to third and Souths gain fourth spot on the ladder.

There has obviously been a lot of talk about Taniela's form and rightly so, he has a very bright future. Criff is killing it for the Brethren as well. I hope he gets a NRC spot.

The general talk from Easts supporters is that Brothers are the one's for us to watch. Definatly in form, and are strong across the park. Your backline in particular has some serious threat when Greene is pulling the strings.

Many see the round match against Brothers at Bottomely as a Grand Final preview.

First we have got to get over Souths who are in some serious form right now.

Wests are easts biggest threat in two weeks,watched the game from Roma and the Wests scrum dominated brothers all day, then sunnybank then bond. Wests backs have now got it together and the whole team are defending like their lives depend on it. No team can take them easy, good to see them playing for each other.

Easts were pretty woeful at the weekend against the Uni's pick and drive. And will need to show a bit more grunt in the forwards if they are to come away with a win against the Magpies in the next round. But my prediction is the craftiness of South's Nbr 10 Teddy Tela and his brother, Mika on the wing will be the determining factor this saturday. I know its a tough call but am predicting a win to Souths

Easts have plenty to work on for sure but Souths won't get much ball to work with at all.
I think the Tigers will play a very different style vs the Magpies at Chipsy Wood and will need to be on top of their own game but Easts are building real depth at the moment. The Premier reserve grade side will be receiving some high quality reinforcements soon as the following return in two weeks

Parraka, Gunn, Wilkin, Turner, and perhaps one other high profile Reds player yet to be announced.

Premier Colts knocked over UQ 14-7 on Saturday also which was their first loss.

A couple of thoughts on the UQ v Easts game on the weekend. I left with about 20 to go after Uni had just scored to bring them about 10/12 points within the lead. Obviously blew out after that.

The Easts 12 was tough to bring down, the uni defense seemed to hold off him a bit to their detriment. The experience in the Easts halves was a real difference in the game. Brandon settled well and chose his moments to push the attack well. In contrast to UQ who just seemed to lack a bit of experience/game management there. The return of Dalgliesh/Gale will make a massive difference there for the Heavies in weeks to come. Parker v White was a good match up. Both played well. Hagan out played JJ in this game. I'm a big fan of Hagan, he certainly had JJ on the mental side of things. JJ seemed to implode a bit unfortunately, he is a rare talent... just needs to get his head right.

Easts forwards were OK, definitely weren't as good as some of the mail on this forum had led me to believe. In the 60mins I saw the Uni pack outplayed them at the set piece and general play. As someone said earlier UQ were making meters at ease through their pack. Easts slowed down the Uni pill which the ref was happy with, probably something the students didn't adjust well enough to. I watched Tigers v Dragons a few weeks ago and one of the tigers back rowers was a big bearded fellow.... can anyone tell me what happened to him? Has he simply shaved his beard? He was their best that day. Cornelsen made a welcome return. It's a real shame we won't get to see a Jack de Guingand/Connor Mitchell/Cornelsen backrow combination this year. De Guingand was the forward of premier rugby for me this year till he got injured.

All in all, not a bad game. Disappointing for a uni supporter. Heavies made good inroads in attack whenever they had the ball but simple mistakes with ball in hand where the killer for them. On the flip side Easts handling was good and they countered well off a couple of UQ turnovers. Will be interesting if the two teams meet again at the business end.

Most would probably predict an Easts v University final - mainly due to previous finals' success.
