Sevens 2022/23 (World Series etc)

It just goes to show how the doldrums in a sport don't have to be permanent. The mens 7's was a basket case only a short while aho and now look at them.

This combined with the success of the Aus A programme makes me optimistic about the game here more generally.
The coaching swap was one massive big fail.

The men have had a pretty substantial change of style. We used to be bigger and taller, along with that slower, less agile and less fit. We're now one of the smallest teams yet quickest.

Why can't longbottom play halfback in 15's. He is small, but so is the frog half. He's faster this year than ever, he ran down that 6'4" french guy easily. Great long pass. Would be the best attacker in the side. Kicks ok.

Seen him play 15s at Randwick when the world 7s was on break due to Covid. He played a bit of half, but looked more comfortable at 15, where he could chose his moments. But that was probably more that he’s a 7s player with a league background than someone who grew up understanding the tactics. I’m not saying it can’t work. He was impressive in those big moments this weekend

Why not leave him in 7s. Build a winning Oly team around him. That will bring more rugby exposure and Oly medals lead to more funding from Sports Australia. Their funding is tied to medal potential and that alone

Yeah I hope some of these guys don’t go to 15s, I have my doubts about most of them - especially Corey Toole. I get why they go, it’s higher pay but I don’t see them being successful at all.

7s needs an IPL moment. Some form of short club tournament with auctions for all of the worlds top player. Fit it around the existing international structure, give the players a chance to earn some extra dollars.

Not sure which country would host it, don’t have a rugby version of India

Corey Toole had a successful 15s career at Gungahlin Eagles in the JID competition before joining the Aus 7s. While I am concerned he might be a bit on the small side for Super Rugby I am hopeful that he will succeed given his background in the game.

Well yes, you can’t make a name for yourself playing 7s. Most of the current guys are good Shute Shield players, would they cut it as 15s professionals? Probably not.

Yep & then count me out
Don’t think the players would care if you’re in or out if it means they’re actually earning a decent income

current 7s calendar , especially for women’s doesnt allow for proper exposure and commercialisation of the talent. This is reflected in earnings and endorsements

Thanks for wasting everyone's time with your response ...... again
take a look at your own response and contribution to the discussion. If you’ve got zero interest in something, you don’t have to be a dick about it or dismissive based on a simplistic sample size of ‘people you know’

I know a few league types who like watching 7s but zero interest in 15s. FWIW.

In many emerging international markets that’s certainly the case, but I’d also argue that supporting both XVs and 7s strongly aren’t mutually exclusive concepts, especially depending on the time of year and other available alternatives.
