Which is weird because wasn't he basically the only person on Fox who was saying 'guys this is serious'? (not supporting him think he ass-backwards with everything as well).

Apparently, it was Carlson who really convinced Trump to take this seriously when he got a face-to-face meeting at Mar-A-Lago.

Man, I don't know much about the Daily Caller but finding out that it was founded by one of the more partisan shills on the Fox Network really makes me doubt its value to the debate.
Probably not one of your approved news sources but Fox are now reporting that the theory that the virus started in wet markets was concocted by Chinese authorities to mask the fact the leak was from a lab. Apparently there actually were no bats for sale in the Wuhan wet markets [nice plot twist for Dismal's feature film].

We will see if this is being sensationalised to take the heat off Trump but supposedly the sources relaying this information are from inside the State Department which is where The Washington Post originally obtained its leads from. So it seems there is some credibility.

We swallowed the meme that swallowed the pangolin that swallowed the bat; I don't know why it swallowed the bat, ................

Fox now also reporting that US intelligence sources say the WHO was complicit in China’s coverup. This is a massive allegation. Trump surely halted funding knowing these allegations would come out in order to claim media victimisation and stir up the base. He is the best in the business at othering. No one is going to be talking about New York now.

Captain Tom update:

"A 99-year-old Second World War veteran has raised more than £15m ($31m) for the British National Health Service by walking 100 laps of his garden using a zimmer frame.

"Captain Tom Moore, who turns 100 on April 30, wanted to complete the challenge at his home in Bedfordshire before his birthday to support medics on the frontline the coronavirus crisis, who he says are "national heroes"."

A petition (300K signatures so far) has been started for him to be knighted but I'm sure he'll get something special for his 100th regardless, BoJo & co. will be all over this to distract attention from their less than stellar performance which includes buying a heap of test kits that turned out to be duds:

The NHS isn't a fucking charity though. It is a body that should be adequately funded by the government.
People are normalising the idea that the NHS needs to rely on charity to function. This should not be the case, it is a public service, not a charity.

It's a handy scapegoat for sure. WHO made a number of massive blunders in early public reporting, but the US Government doesn't rely on advice from the UN/WHO when making internal policy decisions (Iraq invasion anyone?!). Whether the WHO deemed it a 'pandemic' or not on such and such a date has no bearing on sovereign states' responses.

On sunnier thoughts......

I hope that now that there's breathing space in many western economies to look at relaxing some of the public health measures, there's also space to come together with developing countries to help them avert the catastrophe knocking on their doors.

I mean, NCY is the seat of global wealth and power, and they are just keeping their heads above water. Just.

South Asia and African nations with none of the economic, political or health system clout are facing the same problem with a scintilla of the resources needed to combat it. I worry that us patting ourselves on the back for having averted the crisis masks that globally, it's only just heating up. The true horror of 'exponential growth' will become apparent when it really rips through India/Bangladesh/Pakistan etc.

It might be about scapegoating for Trump but WHO is clearly being used by China to expand it's political influence.

It's part of the shift to them being the dominant world power as the US retreats from that position under Trump.

He seems to miss the fact that controlling a lot of these organisations is what has helped the US remain the dominant world power for a long time.

The concept of defunding them which various other countries are jumping on to various degrees (a few Australian politicians like Dave Sharma and Concetta Fierravanti-Wells have started pushing this) is pretty ridiculous in my view. It's petty and acts as if meting out punishment against WHO achieves anything other than hampering how helpful it will be next time.

It's an epic dummy spit to throw away all of the real leverage that the US has over the organisation. And I got back to my point about the wealthy world needing to show material solidarity with the *people* living in poorer countries who are going to be reamed in the coming months.

I get that Trump is playing politics, both internally re. his narrative of control and success, and externally against the risen China, but pulling out of one of the main vehicles for addressing a global pandemic is appalling behaviour and absolutely in-line with how that bloke operates.

What do they do, exactly? If it's about monitoring and early warnings they seem to have failed pretty drastically.

Not saying i agree with the de-funding, but if they failed as badly as it seems primarily because China told them to stay silent there probably needed to be some kind of reprimand.

I don't know if this is true and if it is, it's shocking. But I would hazard that China may not have been forthcoming with sharing true information with the world community. Occam's razor.

And again, the US government has been aware of the risk of COVID through many channels, months before it was an internal crisis. They didn't act and are wildly looking for a scapegoat. It's not like the world waited with bated breath for WHO to finally declare a pandemic before acting. Morrison pre-empted it and cancelled entry from China days before WHO pulled their trigger.
