Sydney Subbies 2022

Prodigy

Alex Ross (28)
Did you know that out of the 24 clubs that fielded more than 2 grades this year (across Divisions 1, 2 & 4), only 6 of them were able to fulfill their divisional requirement as well as fulfill their game obligations (i.e. not forfeiting a game). Only 3 were in Division 1......

Where is the recognition of this?

Or will clubs not hear anything - outside of updates from their website - from Subbies-land?

Contact information for Subbies is available on their website if anyone has queries, grievances, or grudges.

Probably a more suitable communication method than a random rugby forum, yes?

Back to the action - Whales win 18-0 over Waverley at David Phillips tonight. The first try came a few phases after an excellent 50-22 resulted in an attacking lineout. Second try pure power with the maul. Add a couple of penalties and that's all she wrote.

Waves were OK but handling and discipline seemed to let them down at key moments from the parts I watched out of the corner of my eye.

Wow - there are some pelicans on this thread!

The Lurker is reliably informed that the lunch was essentially free - as part of the Waratahs sponsorship deal with Tattersals Club. The Lurker believes that all beverages were provided by Waratah sponsors.

the Lurker also understands that a wide cross section of clubs across divisions were invited.

the traditional lunch at Millner has been converted to an open bar - so all the little piggies from the lower divisions can get their fill!

No touching the precious subs - or affiliation fees. You blokes whining can relax - Subbies actually saved a shed load of money.

you can now resume your normal transmission!

oink Oink from the Lurker. xxx ooo

I just had a random thought: maybe it was clubs who had ever won Kentwell and still exist? Lane Cove won it in 1967 and 1968.

It is interesting to look at that list, and understand that of the 31 Kentwell winners:

8 are in First Division this year (Blue Mountains and Forest being the 2 without a Kentwell)
2 are in Second Division (Newport and UNSW)
2 are basically Third Division (Briars and Old Iggies)
3 are Fourth Div (Savers, St Ives, and Epping - tho you could make a case for them being closer to Third Div)
2 are in Sixth Div (Lane Cove effectively, and Balmain)

14 don't exist in effect, tho they may have evolved - someone with a better appreciation of the history might know more:

Bondi Life Savers
Bronte
Concord West
Coogee
Dundas Valley
Matraville
Moore Park
Newington Old Boys
North Steyne
NSW Fire Brigades
Roseville
Royal Aus Artillery
St Leo's
Western Suburbs

You will fit right in EastCoast. Maybe a little too well based on some of your posts….

Why is Prodigy so filthy? Surely the Rams got an invite seeing as though Epping is listed as winning the Kentwell in 1945…. If that was the prerequisite for attendance.

St Leo’s is now Beecroft Seniors.

No, it was more likely the affiliation fees paid for by the 40+ clubs in the association.
but it’s not like rugby to only consider the top end of town and forget about the little guys.
Probably a lot of people in the room patting themselves on the back for the amazing job they have done this year.
We now cross live to Hudson Park where the celebrations have already started for St Pat's upon hearing the news they are now the Top End of town.

Can confirm. Holding a similarly sized lunch at TG on Kentwell Cup Day would have cost Subbies much, MUCH more.

the traditional lunch at Millner has been converted to an open bar - so all the little piggies from the lower divisions can get their fill!

And yet, of all the clubs in Subbies who were invited, only half a dozen showed. Life Members were well represented along with a few people from NSW Rugby, and even a sponsor or two.

Free entry to the ground, then free beer and food from 2PM, as well as covered seats to watch the back half of Second Grade and a fairly intense First Grade game. A chance to chat to Paul Doorn and a few other people in the Halls of Power ;) What's not to like?

I'd also like to state that the claim made about about "backhanders" from insurance payments is unmitigated rubbish.

The Subbies Board is made up of active members of Clubs across all divisions, and we're keenly aware as Club people that insurance costs have risen and are a major issue for running community sport.

FACT: Subbies has been working with NSW Rugby and other unions to seek a better deal than the one that is currently in place, and particular individuals are covering a lot of ground to try and make this happen. Not all the factors in the insurance discussion are within the control of the Unions e.g. any insurer will look at the portfolio cost and price it accordingly.

Due to some large claims in rugby the last few years, for people who were seriously injured (wheelchair-for-life level injuries), there isn't a lot of room to price risk out of the premiums, but discussions are ongoing.

Season 2022 is done. It had some rough edges, but at least it was a full season.

To preface what I'm about to say: everyone here pretty much knows who I am, or has at least joined the dots by now. I am more active on this forum than other Board members, because ultimately I enjoy this kind of engagement - just lurking here gathering rumours would not be my style. I've made missteps in my comments on the Subbies threads ;) which is why I am fairly measued in my responses.

To the point: Communication is key.

A couple of accounts on here spray rumours or misinformation around, and suddenly it is fact in the minds of the crowd. A lie makes it halfway around the world before the truth gets out of bed, and Subbies is no different.

"Subbies" is not some opaque, all-powerful dictatorship, neither is it omnipotent. Getting everything right is tough even in a good year (and the last few years have been less than good). When decisions are made it is after all attempts at good communication.

Sometimes, mistakes happen or things don't turn out 100% well for everyone involved. That is true whether you're the Executive, the Board, a Club Committee, the Referees, Coaches, volunteers, or a player.

My suggestion is that if you hear something you think sounds outrageous, then by all means call your Club Committee / Executive and ask them.

If you're on the Committee of your club, you know that the lines of communication are open to Subbies staff and should feel free to use them.

If you're NOT involved in a club, and want to talk absolute rubbish about Subbies, I recommend thinking on a sign I saw at another sport: "Before you complain, have you volunteered yet?"

We're all trying to enjoy the great game, and should all be trying to help it grow. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism, provided it is directed with purpose.

Enjoy the off-season.

Thanks Pfitzy. Your commentary is always appreciated and helps all former players stay connected to the comp.

Speaking of staying connected: if you're no longer able to get to games, get in contact with your club to see if there are any spare voucher codes for nswrugby.tv

Watch as many games as you can! The more eyes on the streaming service, the better the deal is for Subbies clubs ongoing.
