This thread is so close to the bone it is scary.
I think the occasion just got the better of a small minority and the sport of Aussie bashing that is promoted just a little too much for my liking in NZ got a little OTT.

Hell its a big occasion for this country and I think the coverage this matter is receiving may be the a trigger to tone it down a bit.

Watching rugby in NZ is similar to watching league in Australia. Being Australian in NZ watching rugby is the equivalent of being a NSW supporter watching an origin match in Queensland. An entire nation of Queenslanders at origin time. It can get ugly, but if you visit again later in the year all will be forgiven.

Tourism is a big deal for the kiwis, while various people make excuses you can be sure management types in NZ worry about this.

Hopefully we will here too, because it's not in anyone's interests for the lowest common denominators to put people off wanting to visit a country. Aussie wants tourism too, and as everyone has pointed out, everyone has lowest common denominators, especially in sport. Sports thuggery can stay in Europe with the football nuts thanks.

Is alcohol a big part of this crap?

Passion and grog can lead to bad outcomes for the majority as the consequence of actions by the minority. The issue is not limited to NZ.

Didn't we have some clowns at the Joeys View game last year. A small number of chemically enhanced old boys causing trouble resulting in police and pepper spray. All this within the prestigious Sydney GPS schoolboy competition.

Defo mate, liquid courage!

I think some of you need to go to the gym and bulk up a little by the sounds of things, maybe grow a rats tail too so as to strengthen preemptive measures...

All jokes a side, that sort of stuff doesn't belong in Rugby Union does it, especially around the kids and woman. As noted in previous posts, isolated incidents occur throughout the world during major sporting events though so there's no real merit in the title of this thread. I'm sure if we raised hands on it, a healthy majority of us would say that part of the reason that we love the game so much is because of the banter and after match beers with the enemy.

Having said that, I'm still in my late 20's though so I'm still in "come in peace or leave in pieces" mode :lmao:

In 25 odd years of watching top grade rugby I can honestly say I've NEVER seen anything get physically intimidatory, or even ugly off the paddock. Some words in the heat of the moment, but nothing more, and usually a handshake after.

The only violence I've seen was between two kilted scots at the pub around kicking out time near Twickenham - and I think they were probably best mates after a few too many!

When you think of it: 25 years x 5ish tests x 50-80,000 people - that's a lotta potential for the stray dickhead, and yet it's never really happened.

It's the best part of why I love rugby and want my son to play it over any other sport - purely because of the values within those who play it and adore it. If some soccer scout turned up with a multi-million contract for Gagger Jr*, I would honestly prefer he did quite literally ANYTHING else than sign, such is my loathing of the values in that game in the UK (separate from it being a beautiful game to watch if played well).

Quite simply money cannot buy the right values in people, and without those values life is empty and ugly.

So, if there is any truth in any of these reports I find them pretty disturbing, because it is really does fly both in the face of what I've always held to be the core of what sets rugby aside, as well as bucking a quarter of a century of experience so far.

[with his genes I am pretty safe from this one I'll admit]

Gagger I am obviously a Newbie world cup blow in but what a great post. I have lived in the UK for 20 years and have the same rugby experience as you. With an English wife and half English kids I also dread the fussball thing. The best friends I have made over here are Kiwis who have all returned home and having spoken to them they have confirmed to me the bogan element in their game and not much they can do about it. Very sad as having attended the 99 and 07 World Cups the spirit was incomparable to any other sporting environment. The Stu Wilson thing I read today has my blood boiling. He should Know better. Is Campos Bitch traumatised at the emergence of another freak talent? The number 7 is meant to get under the 5/8s skin, not the 5/8 under the skin of a whole nation.Ifwe are not to win I was charitbly thinking it's time they won to put them out of their misery but now I'm not so sure.Vive La FRANCE!!

After reading of the disgusting behaviour at the league test in Auckland, when some Kiwis booed during the Australian anthem,I put it down to being an Auckland league crowd. I am just as disgusted to read of boorish behaviour during the RWC. We are the host nation and all overseas visitors are our guests, they should be treated as such. Some journalists also need to take a good look at what they write and the effect it can have on the intellectually challenged.

After reading a bit about this whole shebang in papers, and the response on rugby forums I am getting a feeling og Deja-vu. I seeing almost exactly same type of posts that came on during French tour of NZ when their no 12 was assaulted in streets of Wellington on way home. There was outrage, every paper had reporters wringing their hands, every forum just about went into meltdown about how disgusting Kiwis were to visitors etc, even apology from NZ Prime Minister, and lo and behold, his own teammates seemed to have given him a little smack in their room. I not saying nothing happened in Auckland, but from what I understand, someone rung up newspaper saying he and wife got abused etc, and from there it's blown up. I think I will wait until I actually see some evidence that said events happened I think . I haven't actually heard from one reliable person that it is true. Actually Mike Colman in Courier Mail this morning finding it all at odds with his trip to.

You Antipodeans are certainly getting hot under the collar with it all: Saffers are keeping quiet all the while, maybe you fellas want to play what is in front of you rather than worry about things that might happen.

I thought this whole story was another SMH beat up, a guy gets abused at a NZ rugby match, therefore all Kiwis are bastards.

They even get an apology from the Kiwi PM - winner for the SMH

The reality is you get dickheads everywhere, you deal. That is life.

The cynic in me sees a trend. The SMH gossip columnist got a dig in last week about a Kiwi minister getting loud on free booze at a rugby match - it created a lot of column inches and low and behold this week they find another controversy this week

Stu Wilson has been talking just for the sake of hearing his own voice. In the same way some of ex wallaby comments as newsbites or game commentary are pure shite, and don't often reflect an accurate reflection of the true state of affairs. Prize jewel? FFS.

AS far as boorish behaviour at games. Boozed up dick heads are everywhere. There are some real cocks around. I have been to an NRL grand final, AB games, Super 15 games. The worst I have seen is at a schoolboys 1st XV game in Christchurch. Its a real shame that they get the media time because it has been a pretty awesome event so far.

I never expected to get into the tournament the way I did, mainly because I never realised how cheap it was going to be. We had expected huge prices but I have been able to take the whole family to games for NZ$140. I have even been able to travel to follow Georgia, because a group of us thought they would not have a huge travelling fan base.

I sat in the stands amongst hundreds of drunken scarfie Georgia supporters last weekend and cheered them on against the poms. the English supporters got drowned out at times. It was a fantastic atmosphere. I never saw any fights. Even the Irish were there cheering everyone on, and some of them looked like they had not been to bed yet.

Today the Romanian rugby team are coming here to school to train with our junior Rugby academy boys, then a meet and greet. Which will be a fantastic occasion for them.

But the media are going to get more air time focussing on the negatives than feel good stories, so there are going to be more.

I wasn't going to mention Cooper, but bugger it. He has set himself up as the villain. He seems quite happy to play the role. Why worry about it? He is obviously not bothered. The crowds get someone to boo and hiss. they are happy. He will probably be motivated by it.

You guys get to focus on Richie and boo him and we will all seethe in righteous indignation.

Teach,Have just been on the blower with my Kiwi friends and they all confirmed that indeed Stu Wilson has been on the piss since his (limited) glory days and they are all mightily embarrassed about anything that comes out of his mouth. Also they say it has all been a great event and taken the families along etc etc. And you're right. The world cup needs the pantomine villain and I think Quade loves the role.

Lets face it we can all be dickheads at times. But I have a theory that may hold some water. Perhaps the Kiwis think we just might have a team that could beat them. Of course that team would have to turn up! But it's worth discussing.

That is true and has something to do with it but Kiwis know there are perhaps 3 other teams at this RWC that could do the same. The difference here is proximity and the fact that banter, ribbing, and heckling is the language with which Aussies and Kiwis use to communicate with each other in and around sporting events and also in other areas of life, apple imports, for instance.

Because this is the language we constantly use with each other, there are bound to be instances where idiots step over the line.

I'm not sure about Australia but Kiwis don't generally have this relationship with other countries and as such the banter/abuse is not so apparent, even though it should be in the case of France.

I think the NZ-Australia banter is pretty much in the little brother/big brother context for everything, not just sport.

Australia is always going to be the yardstick by which New Zealand tries to measure itself.

That and the underarm delivery.

Anyone at the Carbon Bar in Burswood Casino Perth for the final Bledisloe game would have noted the strong kiwi crowd booing the Australian National Anthem. I think this all has escalated in the last few years. I was in NZ during the 2007 World Cup and had nothing but good hospitality and friendly banter. Since then Aus - NZ relations have died in the ass. There seems to be some perception that we are all arrogant assholes. though assholes we may be, I think the despair and constant questioning of our players, coaches, administrators on this site would show that we are anything but arrogant.
